XC90 [Rumors] Next Generation Volvo XC90 v3 a.k.a. Embla

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002. The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken in Sweden. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic). In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90. However, in September 2024, Volvo launched the second facelift of XC90, and stated that both models would be sold together.
This is the route I expect manufacturers to take with some ICE models over the next year's. Either discontinue, consolidate or just do a big facelift.

Seems like exactly this is going to happen across the board. Milk the last version of the ICE platforms as much as they can, which means at least another generation on those platforms.

Consolidating isn't going to work, even for BEV cars, see Tesla. The Model S would sell 5000% more cars would they have opted for a facelift. It's technically still top, but no-one wants a 10 year old car anymore.

I think the outgoing XC90 will remain popular and sought after for while. It started at £62k. The EX90 starts at £96k. A big 50% difference. Good that Volvo will sell both in parallel......for now.

I'm not convinced about the latest XC90. It doesn't feel as solidly built as the previous models and I still don't dig Volvo's plug-in hybrid solution for such vehicles.

I've been thinking very seriously to get myself a first generation XC90 with the 5 pot diesel and hold on it for dear life!

The diesel would be my choice over a hybrid - especially for an out of warranty example with high mileage example.

My sister did just that half a year ago. But she needed three rows for her kids.
I don't have any kids and I hope not to have any in the future as well. But I really need something that can comfortably drive 4 to 5 hours, then drive around on unpaved roads and do some mild off-roading. Lately, I've been borrowing either a colleague's RAV-4 or my father-in-law's E53. I hate both with passion, but it's a necessary evil.

My significant other has been literally begging for a full-ass SUV. I was thinking of getting myself an E70 X5, but even the Holy Grail is more affordable these days. You can still get a first generation XC90, without a million miles for a decent price, and the 2.5T diesel is more than adequate for it. Not to mention that the first generation XC90 proved to be built like a tank and I'm quite handy around anything on Volvo's P2 platform.

Why don’t you buy the first gen? Sure the tech isn’t new but it’s still a good looking car and I see plenty around everyday.

It cheaper and leaves pocket change for unforseen expenses.

That's what I'm saying. At first, the obvious choice was the E70, but common sense dictates XC90. I've basically stopped hunting for a nice E30, and I've been looking a few XC90 specimens lately. Right now my household has 4 cars and I'm not in a hurry to add another, but when the right one surfaces I'll buy it without second thoughts. The only downside is that I'll probably have to let the S60 go, which is a shame. A damn shame!

You've kept the S60 for a long time. How many miles/km has it done?

265.000 km
My father bought it new in late 2004 (it's the facelift) and I bought it from him a couple of years later. I've got it since . It proved to be absolutely reliable over the years, asking for very few things, other than typical maintenance. Mechanically it's spotless, the interior is almost faultless (it only needs a handbrake boot) and the exterior is quite good, with only a couple of minor scuffs on the front bumper. And most importantly, not one spot of rust. Oil changes ever 8.000 km with good quality oil, full service history with most maintenance done at the local dealership. I never cheaped out on maintenance and it still feels and drives like new. It doesn't handle like the E39 and it's nowhere near as engaging to drive, but it's a great daily driver and it's unbelievably comfortable over long distances. The 5 pot is a little gem of an engine, as well! It's a very good automobile, while not appreciated as such.

I bloody love this thing!
