MINI Countryman E plug-in hybrid revealed

Almost immediately following its announcement of the autonomous and electric MINI Vision NEXT 100 Concept, we’ve learned that the Oxford-based brand will be developing a hybridized variant of its next-generation Countryman.

MINI has previously tried its hand at electric drivetrains, with the MINI E back in 2011. However, that was more of a limited-production testbed for electric powertrains, while this new MINI Countryman E will be the brand’s first plug-in hybrid.

Using a similar version of the BMW i8’s powertrain, the MINI Countryman E will pack a 1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that powers the front wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox with an electric motor powering the rear wheels. A high-voltage generator mounted to the front axle will provide added boost to the engine for short periods of time, generate electricity for the battery and even act as the starter motor.

The gas engine at the front will develop 136 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque on its own and will get an additional 20 hp from the front-mounted motor. The rear-mounted electric motor will provide 88 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque to just the rear wheels and clever electronics will figure out how to make all of that word seamlessly. According to the EU Cycle, electric range should be about 38 km (24 miles) and can get up to about 50 mph on electric power alone. So the MINI Countryman E will be good for quite a bit of around town electric driving.

This new generation of MINI Countryman will wear the F60 internal model designation and will be both longer, taller and wider than the car it replaces. This new Countryman will continue to seat five but will likely have more backseat room than before, thanks to its longer and wider wheelbase. The new MINI Countryman E will also not give up any interior or cargo space to its hybrid powertrain, like some BMWs. In fact, the trunk space will reman the same as on the internal combustion-engined cars and it will even keep the same underfloor storage in the trunk. The latter is lacking in the BMW i3 REx and the BMW X5 xDrive40e.

The current-generation MINI Countryman is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s kind of strange looking, too bit to be a MINI and not as fu as one might hope. However, it’s still good to drive and is a MINI for those who have families and need more space. This new one is going to get even bigger and will even have more interior room, while also gaining new technology. This plug-in hybrid MINI Countryman E should be very helpful to the MINI brand and BMW Group as a whole.

When I saw it for the first time I was and still I am not taken by the new Countryman.
I feel its design is better suited to the current Countryman and that it looks odd with its original bit exaggerated proportions in the c-Segment of course this where the BMW X2 Twin Countryman Coupe will make sense. Its not an additional model as it is identified with the Countryman in the same way the MINI 3dr and 5dr are identified as one model line.
The Clubman which I bought is absolutely perfect though.

It looks like a Mini 5 door with bigger Windows. Too similar to the previous design. The GLA and A class suffer from the same problem as being too similar to there hatchback brother.

The X1 and the Q3 nailed it when it came to terms of differentiating themselves with their hatches

The Clubman which I bought is absolutely perfect though.

I think MINI really screwed up with Clubman, the first model which I owned and loved worked well, it was quirky and novel, it also was the best of that generation MINI to drive, the slightly longer wheelbase helped it immensely. The second Gen model lost it's quirkiness, if BMW had kept it looking like the Concept instead of watering it down I would have happily had a good long look at it.

Seems I'm the only one who likes what the new Countryman will bring.

Now, if there is to be a Countryman Coupe (X2's counterpart) - will there still be new Paceman, albeit in size of the current Countryman?

2017 Mini Countryman hybrid teased
Mini is about to jump on the hybrid bandwagon with the second generation of its largest model, the Countryman.

The first ever plug-in hybrid model to wear the Mini badge is going to be based on the forthcoming second-gen Countryman and will likely carry the “E” suffix, as revealed in a leakfrom June. Mini isn’t sharing a lot of details about the car, but it does say the combustion engine will drive the front wheels while the electric motor is going to power the rear axle to provide the car with an all-wheel drive layout. The eco-friendly Countryman will always start in electric mode and is going to reach speeds of up to 77 mph (125 kph) without sipping even a drop of fuel.

Chances are the Countryman E will have just about the same hardware as the BMW 225xeintroduced last year with a turbocharged 1.5-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine working together with an electric motor. It should give it a combined output of 224 horsepower (165 kilowatts) and 284 pound-feet (385 Newton-meters) of torque. A 7.7-kWh battery pack is going to be installed underneath the rear seats and will have enough juice for an all-electric range that should be in the same ballpark as the 225xe’s 25 miles (41 kilometers).

There’s no word about performance just yet, but the aforementioned BMW 225xe runs to 62 mph (100 kph) in 6.7 seconds and tops out at 126 mph (202 kph). More importantly, the plug-in hybrid people carrier from Bavaria has a combined fuel consumption of 2.0 - 2.1 liters / 100 km. Charging the battery takes 3 hours and 15 minutes in the 225xe, which can also be had with an optional fast charger that reduces the charging time by an hour. Expect roughly the same numbers from the equivalent Mini.

As far as the design is concerned, the Countryman E will look just about the same as the other versions of the range, with the exception of the additional cap mounted on the front-left fender. Some changes will occur on the inside where the rev counter is going to be replaced by a power display, while the start/stop button will glow yellow instead of the usual red.

The Countryman E will likely be available from day one and should go on sale at some point in 2017. It’s worth pointing out it won’t actually be the first electrified model from the brand taking into account back in 2008 there was a Mini E built in 500 units and offered with a one-year lease to select private and corporate customers.

MINI

Mini (stylized as MINI) is a British automotive brand founded in 1969, owned by German BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands. The word Mini has been used in car model names since 1959, and in 1969 it became a brand in its own right when the name "Mini" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names.
