What we know so far:

- V8 Turbo from AMG (which will also be put in the DB11 next year)
- DB10 design (will closely resemble the car shown in the Bond movies)
- Dual clutch transmission (possible 7 speed)
- Weight loss 50kg
- Follow same concept as the previous gen in terms of driver involvement and excitement

We've known for a while now that the next Aston Martin V8 Vantage would get power from a turbocharged Mercedes-AMG engine, but this is the first time we've had a chance to hear it. The video above, recorded by Autoevolution, shows a prototype of the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage cruising around roads near the Nurburgring. The sound is definitely similar to other V8-powered Mercs, and absolutely does not an Aston power plant. As for how good it sounds, the office is split. At least we're in agreement that it's good the car will probably be offered with a manual transmission.

We can also pick out a few little details from the body. This new Vantage will get fender vents like those on the DB11 starting from just behind the front wheel arch. The DB11's high and wide rear haunches will carry over as well. This particular prototype has a very deep chin spoiler up front, which may indicate there will be more than one version. The headlights are concealed well, but considering the similarities to the DB11 in other areas, we'd expect similar swept-back headlights up front. Basically, the Vantage is shaping up to continue Aston's tradition of similarly shaped sports cars in different sizes, but that's hardly a bad thing when the resulting cars look so good.

The current generation of the Aston Martin Vantage is ancient, even by sportscar standards. Just to give you an idea of what we are talking about, when it was launched, people were just beginning to hear about the DSG gearbox, while 50 Cent was taking all the ladies to the Cady Shop... in a Saleen S7.

The 2-seater, 2-door coupe has largely failed in its original goal of taking on the Porsche 911. But the good news is that Aston can count on the continued support of Mercedes and their AMG bomb-making division.

A German-built engine inside an Aston is nothing new. However, this is the M178 from the AMG GT we are talking about here, a legend in the making that's racked up quite a reputation.

With bags of power and torque, a better gearbox, and a new chassis, the V8 Vantage might be faster than the V12 Vantage model.

However, the Vantage lets us have a good peak at the awesome curves and some outrageous adjustable aero at the front of the car.

Even though Aston made its own twin-turbo V12 for the DB11, the smaller Vantage is getting a Mercedes V8. We're not bothered by that in the least, especially since the Brits uses their oil sump and manifold. That last one is partially to blame for the exhaust note change. By the time it's done, you could part the AMG GT next to the Vantage, have a rev battle and never know what's going.

As far as the design is concerned, Aston Martin has previously said the Vantage would be inspired by James Bond's DB10, and that certainly appears to be the case. From the mirrors to the shape of the headlights, everything is similar to the DB11 production car.

The sportscar will likely be offered as standard with a manual gearbox. As for the auto, we're not quite sure, but hopefully, it's something decent. This is the next step in Aston's revival, and it should be ready by the end of next year, to be followed by the roadster in 2018 or a little later.

It looks pretty big for a Vantage and will need to justify itself against the stunning F-Type that is sexy and has a lot going for it.

My presumption is that new Vantage will have a more resolved design than the DB11.

Apologies for going off-topic. The F-Type (at least in the U.S) has been struggling sales-wise for quite a while now. At the moment, dealer discounts and incentives are quite substantial to get even unsold new MY2015 cars off the lot.

I've come to the conclusion that the novelty factor for sport cars has shortened in recent years.

Daimler's collaboration with Aston Martin, via its Mercedes-AMG arm, is no longer a secret among people who are at least partly into cars, so this 2018 V8 Vantage will likely not drop so many jaws when it goes on sale with the same powerplant as the Mercedes-AMG GT.

To be fair, the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter under the hood of this heavily camouflaged V8 Vantage mule will feature different tuning compared to its cousins from Stuttgart, not to mention a different power output.

That said, we expect the M178 version of the mill, the one with a dry sump, to be the one powering the next V8 Vantage. This will likely happen for two reasons. First of all, a dry sump makes the engine lower and can fit better under the low hood of an Aston Martin, not to mention that it will make the car better suited for sideways action without starving its cylinders of oil.

Second of all, the Mercedes-AMG GT uses a front-midship positioning of the engine and has a transaxle gearbox, just like all modern Aston Martins, so the swap would be easier and less costly. Speaking of which, this hasn't been confirmed as of yet, but the double-clutch Getrag transmission from the GT could also make the transition to the Vantage.

On top of it, there are rumors that the Gaydon two-seater may also get a manual gearbox as an option since they already have experience in fitting this type of transmission as a transaxle.

Despite Aston's allegiance to use Mercedes-Benz parts on its future products, the V12 Vantage successor will not sport an AMG-built twelve-cylinder. Instead, a version of the twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter from the DB11 will be used, but there are poor chances to also come with a manual transmission option.

Expect the 2018 V8 Vantage to be revealed by the end of next year, most likely at or around the 2017 Paris Frankfurt Motor Show in the fall. Its starting price should be a tad higher than what its long-hooded cousin from Affalterbach is asking.

New Aston Martin Vantage to be best-handling Aston ever

Aston Martin’s reinvention, heralded by the new DB11 last year, continues in 2017 as the brand applies the finishing touches to the all-new Vantage. To be launched towards the end of the year, the Vantage also carries the added pressure of being dubbed the “best handling Aston ever” by senior company execs.

This Vantage will have very little in common with its predecessor. Based on Aston’s latest aluminium architecture, the Porsche 911 rival will be longer and lower than the outgoing Vantage, as our exclusive images show, but also lighter.

Big changes continue under the bonnet; this will be the first car to benefit from the new powertrain deal Aston has struck with Mercedes. It means the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the Mercedes-AMG GT will be fitted – likely to be paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Another of Aston’s ambitions is to set its models apart from one another more visually and dynamically. Matt Becker, former Lotus chassis expert and the man now in charge of vehicle dynamics at Aston, told us: “In terms of dynamics and sound character, it’s quite easy; we have enough tools around us.

“Because we are developing many cars at the same time we can collectively evaluate and develop [them] to make sure there’s enough difference between the products to position them in the space they need to be relative to their competitors.”

Asked if the Vantage will be the best-handling Aston to date, Becker replied: “It will be. We’re developing the car at the moment and the performance is already in a great place and there is still more to come.”

Our images – produced after the car was spied on test – give you an idea about how the Vantage will look when it arrives; more DB10 design cues are expected to keep it distinctive and mark it out from the DB11.

Becker added: “When I turned up at Aston, Andy Palmer [CEO] gave Marek [Reichman, chief designer] the brief to make all of the cars different enough so that his mother could recognise them. [Palmer] wanted me to make them drive like they look.”

The tight proportions and small footprint of the existing model are perfect. Let's hope the new one isn't a bloat.

My 20 bucks on this car looking identical to the DB11, just the shrunk version of it, what do you guys reckon?
The info I have heard is that it will take a lot of styling cues from the DB10 (Bond car). The DB11 design is controversial and not very well perceived in the eyes of AM fans. The DB10 on the other hand, even to a blind man, was. That's why AM made the Vantage successor resemble the DB10.

I surely hope you're right

I think you're wrong, I think they're going to differentiate them much more than they have the current generation, at least I hope so.

Whatever the final product turns out to be, the geriatric outgoing model is so darn long in the tooth it's not even funny...Seriously thought Aston were about to pull a Morgan with this one, lol :p

It might be long in the tooth but it's still a very attractive looking car, it will be hard to beat looks wise.

The exterior looks like a winner - no floating /contrast roof judging the spy shots and it looks leaner with the One-77 style greenhouse. .

I'm anticipating the interior being a direct carry over from the DB11, but a DB10-style modern minimalist interior would make it a instant hit.
