What we know so far:
- V8 Turbo from AMG (which will also be put in the DB11 next year)
- DB10 design (will closely resemble the car shown in the Bond movies)
- Dual clutch transmission (possible 7 speed)
- Weight loss 50kg
- Follow same concept as the previous gen in terms of driver involvement and excitement

We've known for a while now that the next Aston Martin V8 Vantage would get power from a turbocharged Mercedes-AMG engine, but this is the first time we've had a chance to hear it. The video above, recorded by Autoevolution, shows a prototype of the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage cruising around roads near the Nurburgring. The sound is definitely similar to other V8-powered Mercs, and absolutely does not an Aston power plant. As for how good it sounds, the office is split. At least we're in agreement that it's good the car will probably be offered with a manual transmission.
We can also pick out a few little details from the body. This new Vantage will get fender vents like those on the DB11 starting from just behind the front wheel arch. The DB11's high and wide rear haunches will carry over as well. This particular prototype has a very deep chin spoiler up front, which may indicate there will be more than one version. The headlights are concealed well, but considering the similarities to the DB11 in other areas, we'd expect similar swept-back headlights up front. Basically, the Vantage is shaping up to continue Aston's tradition of similarly shaped sports cars in different sizes, but that's hardly a bad thing when the resulting cars look so good.
The current generation of the Aston Martin Vantage is ancient, even by sportscar standards. Just to give you an idea of what we are talking about, when it was launched, people were just beginning to hear about the DSG gearbox, while 50 Cent was taking all the ladies to the Cady Shop... in a Saleen S7.
The 2-seater, 2-door coupe has largely failed in its original goal of taking on the Porsche 911. But the good news is that Aston can count on the continued support of Mercedes and their AMG bomb-making division.
A German-built engine inside an Aston is nothing new. However, this is the M178 from the AMG GT we are talking about here, a legend in the making that's racked up quite a reputation.
With bags of power and torque, a better gearbox, and a new chassis, the V8 Vantage might be faster than the V12 Vantage model.
However, the Vantage lets us have a good peak at the awesome curves and some outrageous adjustable aero at the front of the car.
Even though Aston made its own twin-turbo V12 for the DB11, the smaller Vantage is getting a Mercedes V8. We're not bothered by that in the least, especially since the Brits uses their oil sump and manifold. That last one is partially to blame for the exhaust note change. By the time it's done, you could part the AMG GT next to the Vantage, have a rev battle and never know what's going.
As far as the design is concerned, Aston Martin has previously said the Vantage would be inspired by James Bond's DB10, and that certainly appears to be the case. From the mirrors to the shape of the headlights, everything is similar to the DB11 production car.
The sportscar will likely be offered as standard with a manual gearbox. As for the auto, we're not quite sure, but hopefully, it's something decent. This is the next step in Aston's revival, and it should be ready by the end of next year, to be followed by the roadster in 2018 or a little later.
