Aston Martin is continuing with testing of a new modular platform to underpin its next generation of sports cars, starting with a DB9 replacement due for a reveal at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. A prototype for the new car has been spotted once again, revealing a few of the details we can expect on the final version.

Aston Martin confirmed it was working on the new platform more than a year ago, after it received some much-needed funding from its investors. However, apart from the fact the platform is being designed to accommodate a new V-8 engine and some electrical systems sourced from Mercedes-AMG (we can see a Mercedes-style digital instrument cluster in some shots), there is very little we know about it. An attachment to the dash on one of the prototypes reveals the "VH500-X1" code name, suggesting that the new platform will stick with the VH (Vertical-Horizontal) principle of Aston's previous platforms (the Rapide was referred to internally as the VH400).

The new VH5 platform will be Aston Martin’s first all-new design since the original VH0 setup introduced in the first-generation Vanquish back in 2001. The automaker says the new platform will enable its cars to be at the forefront of design, performance and technology, and in addition to Mercedes-AMG’s V-8 engine the platform will also likely fit the current 6.0-liter V-12, which will be supplied to Aston by the Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] until at least 2018.

One thing we do know is that the Mercedes-AMG engine to be supplied to Aston Martin will be a variation of the new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that debuted in the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT. Output will likely be capped at around 500 horsepower, with the Ford-sourced V-12 to serve as the performance flagship. An eight-speed automatic from ZF will be offered, most likely positioned at the rear for better weight balance, and hopefully a conventional manual option will be offered too.

Expect Aston Martin’s engineers to stick with bonded aluminum construction for the new platform, but with weight and rigidity improved compared to the outgoing VH4 design. The new platform is also expected to be more flexible in terms of wheelbase and track width. Looking at the earlier shots of a test mule, we can see a slightly longer wheelbase and wider track. This flexibility is particularly important as the platform, in modified form, may be used for the high-riding model Aston Martin previewed with its recent DBX concept car.

As mentioned above, the new platform will debut in the DB9 replacement coming in 2016. A name for the car is yet to be announced but it’s almost certain it will feature a DB followed by a number. DB10 was used for Aston Martin’s car created exclusively for the upcoming James Bond movie Spectre. This means we should see the new car use the DB11 name, which Aston Martin recently trademarked. As for styling, Aston Martin’s Vulcan track car is said to hint at what’s to come.

LOL @ those S class HVAC controls vertically on the passenger side like that :D

Seriously though, lot's of MB stuff to be seen there, quality will make a giant leap for Aston, as will all the tech seemingly on board. Very nice indeed.

This car is going to be delicious. Mercedes tech, AMG V8, Aston styling. It looks like a baby ONE77. The AMG V8 at 525hp or so and the V12 needs to be totally reworked and deliver at least 650hp.

You forgot the steering wheel, the key, the COMAND controller and instrument cluster.:D

I hope it's just this Frankensteined prototype and not in the full production car.

Aston Martin DB11 officially announced in Frankfurt

Aston Martin DB11 moniker

Will be introduced sometime next year
Aston Martin has used the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce their next sports car will be called the DB11.

Set to debut sometime next year, the DB11 will "sit at the heart of the luxury British brand’s range and represents the first major product of the company’s bold Second Century Plan."

The company is keeping details under wraps but Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer said "Today I am proud and pleased to confirm that the DB11 nameplate will sit on our next new car. Not only is it a sign of our intention to continue the long line of iconic sports cars that bear the ‘DB’ moniker – the very bloodline of our brand – but it also shows the world our ambitious plan in action."

Specifications will be announced in "due course," but previous spy photos have already confirmed the model will ride on updated version of the VH platform and feature a 6.0-liter V12 engine. The car also slated to offer a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine sourced from Mercedes-AMG.

Good eye. However it's from the AMG GT. [HASHTAG]#LateToTheParty[/HASHTAG]

Aston Martin is in dire need for a reinvention and for their own exclusivity I pray that the interior won't be a Merc part-bin fest. A new Bond movie comes out this year and unsurprisingly the fresh looking Jaguar is generating more buzz than the Aston with a too familiar design.

Production body. Interesting - Lots of DB10 influence:

Aston Martin has taken yet another step toward debuting its long-awaited replacement for the DB9, the DB11, ditching the heavy, obstructive plastic cladding for production sheetmetal and stick-on camouflage. The move gives us our best look yet at the automaker's next volume grand tourer.

Opinions on whether or not this new car gets its inspiration from the DB10featured in the James Bond film Spectre are divided. From what we can tell, the profiles are virtually identical between the cinematic machine and this DB11 mule, and it looks like the DB10's thin taillights sit in larger cutouts below a similarly shaped trunk lid. The DB11 does look to get some kind of spoiler, though, and it may even be a pop-up item, neither of which were featured on the Bond car.

The biggest differences between the movie coupe and the road car are found on the front end. The headlights are certainly larger and have had their shape tweaked. They now run further up into the fenders, giving just a hint of Ferrari F12. Even so, they're still unmistakably Aston Martin units. That's also true of the grille, which ditches the concept-spec single element on the DB10 for a more conventional upper and lower unit.

We have no explanation for one element, though. Look closely at the C-pillar, and you'll notice what looks almost like some kind of vent. Our spies argue that it's an aerodynamic item, like you'd see on the C-pillar of a BMW i8, but we aren't sure. Were it a pure aero aid, we'd expect to be able to see through the other side, like you can with the i8 or something like an Air Curtain. Instead, it could be some kind of air intake for cooling. That's just conjecture, but it's not unreasonable.

But what's under the hood? Our spies did some digging and doubt that it's Aston's traditional 6.0-liter V12. Instead, registration data for the prototype shown above lists its engine displacement at 5.2 liters, with our spies claiming forced induction will be used. It's not clear if this engine is a product of of Aston's relationship with Mercedes-AMG – the only V12 you'll get from the Germans is a 6.0-liter twin-turbo, while it also sells a 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 – but it seems like a possibility.

Aston Martin confirms new 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbocharged engine

Aston Martin has confirmed that it is building a brand new 5.2-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine, with the forthcoming DB11set to be the first production model to use the power plant.

The existence of a new V12 engine has been rumoured for some time, but has now been confirmed via a short video issued by the British manufacturer.

The video focuses on the engine’s components, before zooming out to show the engine cover reading ‘V12 5.2 Twin Turbo’ and finishing with a message saying ‘Coming Soon’.

Aston Martin sources haven’t confirmed that the new DB11 will definitely use the unit, but it seems logical that its most crucial new car in a decade would. Indeed, a DB11 test mule on British registration plates has been spied and on the DVLA’s website the car is listed as having a 5200cc engine.

There is no official word on power output from the new engine, although it seems likely that it could surpass the 568bhp served up by the ‘AM29’ V12 used in the Aston Martin Vanquish.

A maximum power output in the region of 600bhp is possible from the new engine. That would make it Aston Martin’s most powerful series production V12s, surpassed only by the tuned powerplants used in special edition models such as the One-77 and Vulcan.

Future Aston Martin moders are also set to receive a supply of twin-turbocharged V8 engines built to the Gaydon company's specifications by AMG. That raises the prospect of naturally aspirated units eventually being phased out from Aston's model range.

The DB11 must have an entirely new front-end structure because they actually found room in the engine bay to fit the V12 engine with two turbos and the accompanying accoutrement.

Is the V12 a Mercedes unit? Mercedes don't make a 5.2 liter V12. On another forum I visit a member there is positive that this is a new Cosworth developed unit, I would live to know if this is correct. I don't really like the idea of AM using a German engine.

600 bhp is no longer enough when you have cars like the Ferrari F12.

Indeed, the frantic Ferrari F12 moved the game on by leaps and bounds. The Aston Martin is a grand-tourer that is luxuriously appointed, comfortable, relaxed, and suitable for a long journey. But I think a direct rival to the Ferrari F12 will need to have at least 650hp. Such an output shouldn't be too difficult from the new twin-turbo 5.3L V12 engine.
