A7/S7/RS7 [Spyshots] 2018 Audi A7 (gen II)

Let us not prematurely dismiss the gen II A7/S7/RS7.

According to the newest Autobild (available as of today), choice insiders who have actually seen the car claim that "it is the most visually beautiful Audi ever".

Back in 2006, I distinctly recall this being quoted with regard to the upcoming A5. It was arguably accurate.

The A7 is one of the better looking Audis for sure but one thing I hope they sort out is the look of the rear hatch line and back lights, it looks too flat and droopy. A bit like an elephant sat on its boot and made a warm crap that melted its back lights make them run down on the sides!

Todays' Autobild article alludes to a departure from the current "fastback" theme, it being replaced by a "rakish, shallow side-glassed, coupe-like roofline with a very inconspicuously integrated hatch". Something like a far sleeker Skoda Octavia sedan, perhaps ? Slightly notched to alleviate that notorious "droop" ?

That would be a nice step forward. Audi needs to step up their game. If they release some killer A8, A7 and A6, they can hurt MB and BMW. I´m not sure about the next 6er GC and CLS, but the new 7er and the new E-Class do not look like winners IMO (S-Class is fantastic and G30 5er has a lot of potential though).

At least I hope they finally get rid of the one sausage many sizes.

The Prologue concept cars, especially the Prologue Avant, leave me immensely impressed. And I can only hope that the design is accurately replicated on the upcoming larger A-series cars. The elements that fascinate me are the high wheel arches/diminished vertical fender mass, the "Quattro" accentuation of the fenders, the shallow side glass and the low hoodline. To my eyes, the W222 S-Class appears rather pudgy and dated in comparison. It will be interesting to see BMWs' G11/G12 7-series in true production guise.

It has been frequently stated that the Prologue was created following the design "sign-off" for the upcoming A6/A7/A8 cars. Perhaps it is truly an accurate precursor. I certainly hope so.

Next-gen Audi A7 to lose its distinctive rear end

If you're a fan of the Audi A7, you might want to look away as a new report is indicating the model will lose its distinctive rear end.

According to Car & Driver, the stylish four-ringed hatchback will get a "more mainstream butt" when the second-generation model is introduced in a couple of years. While the move is unfortunate, Audi buyers reportedly had a problem with the car's unique rear end.

Little else is known about the next-generation A7 but it is expected to feature styling that mimics the Prologue concept. The model is also slated to ride on the ride on the MLB Evo platform and feature similar engines to the Q7.

What a shame...

As it currently stands, much seems to indicate that the series II Audi A7/S7/RS7 will be positioned somewhat upmarket versus the current car. Note "somewhat". According to a recent interview with Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, he sees little credence in developing a 4 door coupe based on the companys' luxo-mobile (the upcoming D5 A8)-yet finds it prudent to exercise a bit more flamboyance vis-a-vis the C8 A6 basis. The series II A7 will retain its' hatch, albeit in a far more inconspicuous manner. Thus, it appears that an "A9" will be very unlikely. And in fact in all likelihood superfluous as the D5 A8 will have a far more rakish roofline than the D4 car (apparently an upcoming design paradigm on all large VW-Group sedans according to Walter de Silva).

Really ...Audi buyers had a Problem with the rear, What problem?

Not sure how to respond to that render posted by @tristatez28lt1 .....it's not doing much for me I'm afraid.

Agreed on both accounts:
- Said render is ridiculous; the styling is awful and implausible for production realisation.
- The current A7 is actually a thing of design magnificence. The rear in real life has beautiful lines - creases, haunches, elegance and so on. The A7 is one of Audi's stand-out designs (along with the new TT and A3 sedan) in an otherwise sea of design stagnation.

Oh, the latest Autobild renderings aren't that bad. I would be very much inclined to doubt their accuracy, though. Several elements, such as the Prologue-mimicking albeit slightly more subdued flank sculpturing, may be adapted. The roofline however...?

Yes- it does appear to be disturbingly close to Porsches' upcoming Panamera II.

Rumor: New Audi A7 Gets Longer Wheelbase and Also Adds Notchback Body Style

With the first generation Audi A7, Audi built a lower, wider hatchback variant on the same wheelbase as the A6 sedan. Next time around, Autobild Magazine is reporting that the A7 will get longer and also spawn a notchback body style. Here’s what we know.

Longer Wheelbase

Like the current generation C/D range of cars, the Audi A7 foregoes the A8’s aluminum Audi space frame (ASF) in favor of a steel chassis with hung aluminum panels. Though the A7 (also A6 and A8) now shifts to the more multi-material oriented MLB evo platform, its position closer to the A6 in material content will remain. That said, Audi is looking to differentiate the A7 more from its A6 sibling and as such it will get a longer wheelbase.

If you’re thinking of the Chinese market Audi A6L right about now, you’re on the right track. No doubt the A7 will have a wider track and completely new body style as compared to any A6 offering, but rumor is that the longer wheelbase of A6L will be applied to the standard A7. That means more of a larger presence for the A7 model and helps justify the more premium pricing over the A6 sedan. It also expands the A7 range to be more of a model in between A6 and A8 and less a body style spawn of the A6. The latter stigma has never really been an issue for the current A7, but it is easy to see how further differentiation will make the A7 more desirable.

Notchback Bodystyle

Also mentioned is the addition of a notchback body style. The A7’s direct competitors like the BMW 6 series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz CLS are both notchback designs. While a hatchback configuration has also never really hurt the A7, a natural addition to the four-door coupe configuration is to also cater to the notchback customers buying brand B and brand MB. In as much, it is said that the new A7 will become a range and get a notchback version.

No Coupe for Now?

Of course the new design C/D models such as A8, A7 and A6 have all been hinted with Audi’s range of prologue concept cars. That the first prologue (pictured in these design drawings) was a notchback 2-door coupe is an interesting consideration. Audi hasn’t suggested it will produce a large coupe or cabriolet yet, but the addition of an A7 notchback would mean that components like trunk lid, taillights, etc. would all be designed. One could easily imagine how Audi might go two steps further with the new A7 range by going with a shorter wheelbase from the A6 sedan just like the current A7, while adding a notchback coupe and Roadster models. This last portion is pure conjecture on our part, but it would seem to make sense if the new A7 proves a popular seller.

The new Audi A8 is expected to drop in 2016, with the A7 coming a year later in 2017. Figure at least another model year before the car shows up in America, perhaps as a MY2018.

Notchback.... Isn't that just a fancy term for more sedan like?

Never really got the notchback designation. Could be anything really.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
