Could you notice improvement with the 9G-tronic gearchanges compared to the 7G-tronic?

Thanks Betty! 0,64 liter less diesel on 100 km is quite an achievement, if we're talking about the only difference between the two cars you've driven, is the automatic gearbox. Do you remember if the tyresize was the same? If I',m not mistaking both cars you drove had 18" wheels. Those rims come with either 4 x 245/50 tyres or with two 245/50 front tyres and two 275/45 rear tyres.

To be honest, I can't remember the tyre sizes. I do know both cars had exactly the same rims. I would imagine the tyres were the same too. Both had winter tyres installed.

Do you remember the engine rpm at that speed for both cars?

Not for the 7-speed (I used to make a record of the rpm), but I remember the 9-speed was barely ticking over at 120km/h, with an engine speed of 1,350rpm.

To be honest it was last November when I drove the 7-speed, but the 9-speed was very impressive. Barely noticed the changes.

This morning my 7G-tronic was exact at 120 km/h, with an engine speed of circa 1.600 rpm. That 9G-tronic seems to be reaching it's goal very well. That explains the much better fuel economy, compared to the first S with 7G-tronic.

Audi A3 2.0 TDI (8V)

53.6 mpg

5.27 l/100km

Notes:

1) Direct competitor to the BMW 118d above, the A3 2.0 TDI had significantly worse fuel economy despite the test not including any central London driving. Also, the on-board computer was much less accurate.
2) 95% of the distance travelled was at a 120km/h cruise on the motorway.
3) Compared to the previous generation, this model had a slightly better fuel economy (53.6mpg) compared with 50.1mpg, yet has 10hp more.

Nice data collection betty...

So, after receiving literally several PMs demanding I update this thread, I thought I'd share all the data I have collected to date.

The first table contains data for the OBSERVED fuel consumption. This is where I don't necessarily drive at a constant 120km/h, or drive a set route. It's just the fuel economy I've achieved whilst driving that car. The first table contains data for 88 vehicles.

The second table is one that you can use to compare between vehicles, as it's the 120km/h fuel consumption. That is I've driven the vehicles over a long distance at a constant 120km/h. Tyre pressures are always checked before the test, and if for some reason there are any external factors which may influence the validity of the data, then the data is not included. This table includes 57 vehicles.

The Audi A4 is highlighted in red as that is the latest addition to the tables.

Where is your 318i?

Where is your 318i?

Whilst I have a pretty good idea of what economy I WOULD get, I wasn't happy that my 120km/h test was accurate due to lots of standing water and high winds, so I didn't count it. I'll do a proper test again at some point and post the data.

I did expect better of my M4 Coupe. I thought it would at least better 30mpg. I never really did a proper test of my E46 M3 and E92 M3, but just from experience I would have expected them to get around 26-27mpg, so 29.9mpg doesn't seem much of an improvement considering the S55 engine in the M4 doesn't come close to the S54 and S65 engines in the E46 and E92 respectively. I would concede, however, that around town I probably would get significantly better economy out of the M4 than the other two.

I am impressed by the M135i (F21) though. 320hp from a straight-six is just behind the Audi A1 1.2 TFSI with 86hp.

Amazed how good the fuel consumption is on the larger diesel executives, both 520d and E220d are amazing.
