Chronos The Watch Thread.

Could anybody teach me "watches"? :D

I mean, I always was interested in looking at watches, but never really though about wearing any. Now I feel like an outsider not having a watch, especially when wearing a suite. I also can't spend for an expensive one (500 is already alot for me). Any suggestions I should take into consideration and what sort of watch I could need? I know it has alot to do with personality and purpose, that is why it is good to have different ones. But any suggestion on an "all-rounder" whatch? Think of a watch like "BMW M3".

Levi, if you're looking for something that's quality, looks good with formal wear, and is under US$500, I'd check out Tissot. They are durable, reliable, Swiss-made, and are general good all-around watches.

This exact one is one that I personally covet...

But it all comes down with what you want it for.

Your wallet is going to lament that decision :D

Basically, there are two large groups of mechanism for watches: mechanical and quartz.

Mechanical use wind springs to drive the gears, while quartz use the vibration of the aforementioned crystal.

-Mechanical divide themselves in two major groups: hand wind and automatic. An automatic winds the spring by your wrist movement (has an eccentric weight mated to spring mechanism), while a handwind as the name suggest, has to be wound by hand.

-Quartz require a battery to power quartz crystal, this can be a replaceable battery, or charged by a solar panel on the watch (like Citizen's Eco Drive) or by a small generator powered by a eccentric weight, similar to the automatic mechanical watch. An example of this is Seiko's Kinetic line.

A quartz watch is more precise than an automatic, which tend to lose/gain some seconds a day, plus they don't maintenance beside battery changes (except the previously mentioned solar and kinetic) but a good quality automatic can last literally for ever, plus the smooth movement second hand (doesn't tick, just flows) has that je ne sais quoi that users love.

Then there is the style thing.... there are "dress" (formal) watches, sport, fashion and then some specialized, like military/aviator's watch or divers.

In your price range I will strongly suggest a japanese brand like Seiko, Orient or Citizen. My advice will be an automatic from Seiko or Orient (Orient is own by Seiko, by the way, but it operates as a separate company) or an Eco Drive by Citizen.

Let me know your wrist diameter, and your particular taste regarding cloths and I can help you choosing one.

I am not going to 'flood' nor spoil this thread. I have a complex with and about watches. Have 9 watches for different outfits. None too expensive. Fact when I win the Euro-millions tomorrow I will have the largest watch collection on planet earth. Enough said!

Favourite Brands:

Breitling (my favourite, just haven't got one - yet)
SEIKO (SPORTURA - my newest edition, for myself for my B-day 07/01/2013)
Tissot
TAG
Rolex
GUESS
TITAN
Jeager-LeCoultre
PUMA

I have SEIKOx2, TEMPO, GUESS, TITAN, PUMAx2,
Jeager-LeCoultre and a fake-TAG from the UAE:D

I wear all japanese: 3 x Citizen, 3 x Seiko, 1 x Orient. I abosolutely love the Orient, they're a bargain, lots of quality for low price.

My favs are dress watches and aviators, like Mr M's IWC. I've a morbid fetiche with blue hands :D
My dream watch comes from Germany:

And an IWC aviator wouldn't hurt, too:

I've never heard of Nomos. Their design seems very clean, minimalist, yet sturdy....I like it alot. I wonder if they are available States-side and how much do they go for?

And IWC, my favorite of the high-end watches....clean and beautiful. This IWC will one day be mine....

Since we are on the topic of high-end time pieces....TAG Carrera and Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine.

Sorry, Levi, got a little carried away....

Thanks for the input. Very interesting. Last I looks at a buying a watch, it was in Italy. It was a Chronotech, don't remember which, but they are recognisable by their prism cristal, I quite liked it, it was both fashion and formal.

Not easy for me to pick a watch according to my cloths. I dress classically, so nothing fancy, but have many styles depending on what I do. When in sport cloths I don't care, I really don't need any whatch. But otherwise I have three other styles. One more sporty/fashion, the other more classic/fashion and formal (suite).

Of course I know Omega, but I'm not sure if I like the watches because they are good/good looking, of because 007 has one. :D

Try the Nomos store:

Other beautiful german watches are: Laco, Sinn and Stowa.

Alex, IMO the watch that better goes with both formal (suit) and not formal cloths is a diver.
At around 150 euros, let me suggest the Orient Mako if you go for automatic:

Or if you want to avoid the automatic's hassles, an Eco Drive by Citizen, the bn0000-04h:

I've the Citizen and it' a keeper. I put a metal bracelet on it, instead of the rubber strap, which is the great thing about watches, when you get bored you just change the strap to leather, rubber, metal or nylon (alà Bond) and you get a completely diferent look

I have soft spot for military watches for Some reason.

And Rolex Deepsea of course.

I have tons of wishlist watches, but never had the guts to buy any. I always find it hard to justify their price tag while my babies (off roader :D) are starving for power :D

Ok these are what i got so far.

Graham Swordfish: bought it for myself back in 2006 as graduation gift. Very unique watch, its a keeper for looong loooong time. Cost me 4K euros back then.

And Nuebeo Jellyfish, I think this company is in trouble now.

Notice that all my watches are inspird by fish somehow :D btw i come from a family with long fishermen heritage :D

nothing big time, but bought this watch when i was 16 and i still wear it

The Le Locle is one my favorite dress watch evers. Sooooooo classy!

I think I have found my watch:

GO FOR IT! You'll be amazed at Orient's quality. They even make their own mechanism in house.

Those are beautiful watches my friend. May be you'll like Citizen's Nighthawk:
