Hot! TOKYO Motor Show - New Honda Prelude

Honda is so weak. This car is not befitting of the name so far.

I agree (y)Compared to the CR-Z it’s adequate. This was also a dud.

The Prelude is a shame for the name. Who’s gonna buy it?

Gentlemans we need coupe.

The definition of a successful Honda coupe is a light car with a high revving VTEC engine and a manual transmission.

We‘ll sent these topics to Japan.

Obviously the English/Japanese translation didn’t work properly.

Instead of the light car, they developed a heavy hybrid.

Instead of high revs, we’ve got an engine which barely touches 6k rpm.

Instead of a manual, we’ve got a CVT with fake gears.

This car is lost in translation.

I find I really don’t understand carmakers decisions anymore. Maybe I have gotten too old into understand. A best friend had a Prelude back in college and another had an Acura Interga. These cars were screamers to drive and they thrived on being driven like you stole them. The last two generation Preludes were some of most fun you could have with FWD. Let’s see if they flush out the lineup with something spicier.

The Civic Type R drivetrain would be already a big improvement.

That’s probably the cheapest way to improve the car.

I know. I had the last two generations of Prelude. Then Honda lost it's balls and has never grown them back.

The car industry is in such a state of Flux, and intense structural change with the rapid ascendence of China, not many decisions by legacy makers seem to be making sense any more.

They're all, or most of them seem to be like a deer in headlights. In the 90's everyone was true to what their brand was. A Mercedes was a Mercedes, a BMW a BMW, a Honda a Honda, a Lexus a Lexus etc and they all were so desirable, unique vehicles. They should get better because of the Chinese, not worse.

LOL they should.

The Germans were doing just fine until the EU basically f#cked the entire European car industry over with their BS targets and policies.

Perhaps it is just me, but this Prelude looks like a beached dolphin crying for help....What exactly is the purpose of this car?
Coupe version of the type R basically. Coupe shapes is edgier is more appealing if you are considering a supra or gr86.

It's for culture.

The trick to make this hybrid more exciting is eight simulated gears. Adding fake gears to a CVT or a hybrid transmission that behaves like one is nothing new – various Toyotas and Subarus do it – and the result is underwhelming. The difference is that in Honda’s hybrid system, the engine doesn’t drive the wheels except at a constant cruise; usually, it drives a generator to feed electricity to the big drive motor or the battery.

WTF?:D

IMHO, this applies more to M-B and Porsche rather than BMW, or more very recently, the VAG volume brands. Audi just may, repeat just may be on the threshold of finally getting their shit together.

I fondly recall that 1990's era of Japanese car manufacturer design. Some of the most visually compelling vehicles in general. Remember Xedos, the Mazda "luxury division" ? Or the first Infinity's ?
Not to mention cars such as the Lexus GS and the Honda S2000.

But more modern Japanese manufacturer design exercises are exciting as well IMHO. The Lexus LS sedan fascinates me. A shame that it wasn't more succcessful. And the Lexus LC 500 is an absolute masterpiece.

That new Corolla is awesome. An example of how a company that prides itself on being the world's top seller, and having its own best-selling and most important car, should do things. Its daring design proved to be a complete success for the future, IMO.
