I prefer the retro shape and design of the saloon. However the design of the SUV is satisfactory. I would love to see it with a grey wool interior.

Let me explain.

It's a good design. Doesn't polarize and sits good with everyone so far. Was this the case with the EQS or EQE? Or the iX? Or Audi's indifferent designs of lately?
Well, this is not an EV, so comparing it to new experimental designs made for EVs is a bit unfair. I agree with you, I dont like any of those either. The w223 though looks very good, can’t say the same about the 7 series, proportions went out of place. If someone wants a clean looking luxury SUV, they can get the new Range Rover, this to me seems like a Mansory Cullinan from 2004 with Genesis lights. Cant even call it a safe bet, just a a reflection of poor creativity from the designers.

I still don’t see how the Germans need to step anything up because of this. Good design?

Have you ever seen a Century? Build quality on Century’s is amazing, the Germans don’t built to this level of attention.

I like it. Lot's of Rolls inspiration, but this what Japan has done for decades. Copy and then improve the product.

Well, I love the Range Rover's design, but we're talking polar opposites of reliability, durability, etc.
Given this is Toyota's top of the line vehicle, it's arguably the best build, more reliable vehicle on the planet.

Japanese people don't make mediocre things....

You mean they don’t make low quality things, they absolutely build millions of mediocre, forgettable cars every single year.

This market isn’t driven by reliability and durability hence Land Rover most expensive products sells like hotcakes.
