Why would anyone need need that engine in this size of crossover unless they are planning to tow a caravan?

VW's entry level crossovers are best purchased with minimal optional extras. As soon as you add a big engine, AWD and DSG, they become expensive to the extent that you are financially better off buying an X1, Q3 or XC40.

Because smaller, more fuel efficient SUVs sell better in europe than large gas guzzling monsters like the atlas. Beside Europe has the superior touareg anyways. Yes the atlas has 3 rows of seats but then so does the tiguan allspace which is probably a better fit for europe than the atlas.

UPDATE The coupe version of VW's smallest T-Cross SUV arrives from South America to Europe. However, the model here is not called Nivus, but Taigo. We captured the little VW as a virtually undisguised Erlkönig.
A coupe version of the VW T-Cross has been rolling the streets of Brazil for about half a year. There the model is called Nivus. And it had a special honor: it was the first model developed by Volkswagen in Brazil for the international market. It is based on the Wolfsburg Modular Cross-Sectional Matrix (MQB). More precisely, it is an A0-CUV with space for five people.

Name hasn't been defined yet and it's only known as "Progetto 376". What have been defined, however is that it will be powered by an 1.3 turbo engine that develops 180 to 185 hp and 270 Nm of torque. The engine will paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive only, albeit with an electronic locking diff (E-Locker).
And below a couple of renders of what it might look like underneath all the heavy camouflage.

This VW Nivus was re-ended by a Volvo truck driving down a hill and then collided head-on with an Audi A5 Sportback driving up the hill. Both occupants in the Nivus only had minor injuries. Audi driver walked away unscathed as well. Truck driver, however was seriously injured.

Where is a picture of the truck?This VW Nivus was re-ended by a Volvo truck driving down a hill and then collided head-on with an Audi A5 Sportback driving up the hill. Both occupants in the Nivus only had minor injuries. Audi driver walked away unscathed as well. Truck driver, however was seriously injured.
After pushing the Nivus into the Audi, the truck crashed into a rock wall and the driver was trapped in the truck. Fire department took two hours to extract the driver out of the wreckage.
