The Volkswagen Polo arch-nemesis in Brazil, has just been updated and here it is the latest iteration of it.
The Fiat Palio 2008
And here it is the pick-up version of the Palio. The Fiat Strada.

After years lagging in the market, while Fiat always showing evolution – and this was one of the great reasons of its leadership – Volkswagen finally prepares its counter-attack. Volkswagen is working hard in what they are promising to be the best iteration of its little Gol in its 27 years of life. The Gol is the best-selling car in Brazil for the last 20 years. The German brand also has other plans for the next years.
Gol NF - The test-mules are already pottering around in all over the Brazilian territory under the bodies of the Pre-facelift Polo. You can tell it’s a test-mule, because the normal Polo has 5 bolts on the wheels, while the Gol and obviously the test-mules have 4 bolts and the panel bodies which are all misplaced with huge gaps
The new Gol NF will share the same platform with the Fox and Polo. The same will happen with the Fox successor in Europe. The Brazilian Fox will be dropped of the European market next year, in favor of a successor built in Russia. The NF family as it’s been called by Volkswagen do Brasil, will spawn an Estate, a Pick-up truck and there are plans for a Saloon version as well.
The new Gol NF will come with a 1.0 litre Flexible-fuel engine and a 1.4 8 valve flexible fuel engine. The later is already in use in the veteran Kombi van and it produces 70 Bhp (petrol) to 77 (ethanol).
The Saveiro is the pick-up version which has always been based on the Gol. The new Saveiro NF will have an extended-cab version to compete the current leader of the small pick-up segment – The Fiat which also has an extended-cab version. The Strada is the pick-up version base don the compact Fiat Palio, the Polo’s main rival. The next Saveiro will feature the 1.4 Flexible-fuel engine as well the option of a flexible-fuel 1.8 engine.
The Sedan, will have the same engine range of the Saveiro. The Sedan version is still without any name; and it’s being provisionally called by Volkswagen do Brasil as “Voyage NF” in reference to the sedan version based still on the original Gol of the eighties and which the Americans knew as the Fox. There was another Brazilian Fox in the eigthies, except at the time, the Fox was a Saloon car exported to North American as a cheaper alternative to the same era Golf and Jetta.
The future of the Parati (the Estate version based on the Gol), however, is unknown. There rumours the Parati will be discontinued and giving more space for the SpaceFox, so the Fox based Estate car probably will replace the entire Parati range.
The NF Family must arrive at the market in the end of this year, initially as the Saloon version and the rest of the family arrives in 2008.
Golf and Bora MkIV/and a half – Still for 2007, Volkswagen works on the face-lift of the Golf. In partnership with Volkswagen del Mexico, the Bora built in Tequila country will get the same finishing touches as the Golf.
Expect to see the Bora with the same front-end as the “reinvented” Mark-four Golf recently launched in Brazil and other touches similar touches as well. The old 2.0 8V MPI engine, will be converted into a flexible fuel unit, that will be able to run on Ethanol or Petrol. The 1.8 20V Turbo gets more power – from 180 to 198 Bhp.
Other ideas – Volkswagen also has another ideas for other segments. Face-lifts and new projects must be the biggest news for 2007, 2008 and 2009.
What will happen in 2008, the Fox will be face-lifted with the same styling as the model exported to Europe. The Fox will also get a 1.4 flexible fuel engine (the same already in use in the Kombi van) in 2008. Volkswagen will drop the Fox out of the European market next year in favour of a Russianbuilt successor for it.
Among the other new projects of Volkswagen in Brazil, also include the commercialization of imported models from Europe and Mexico. Probably a midsize estate car, an SUV competitor against the BMW X3 and even a midsize pick-up truck.
The midsize Estate car will be imported from Mexico, with the name of "Jetta Variant". So expect to see the Golf Variant to be made in Mexico and sold in North, Central and South America as the “Jetta Variant”.
The midsize Pick-up is the “fruit” of a worldwide project of the German brand, being Volkswagen’s first car into this segment. There were unconfirmed rumours this pick-up truck would be the AAC concept which originated the Touareg SUV. Not even the German motoring press knows where did this rumour come from.
As for the X3 rival, the international motoring press claims that would be the Tiguan, recently demonstrated as a Concept, but Volkswagen says the production model will look pretty much the same, except for those odd-looking tires and the usual Concept car add-ons. The production model Tiguan will have the same body shape as the concept.
