Discuss What makes a 'Daily driver'?

Oh good heavens the numb nut logic in this thread around the daily drivability of certain cars is frankly hilarious.

I’ve driven an Aventador. It’s horrible to the point that it’s borderline unusable in the daily grind of normal driving demands. It’s so wide that, at best you’re going to kerb a rim in a basement parking lot, or worse scrape the side on a pillar. It’s just a matter of time. It’s so low that you’ll have wrecked the front splitter on paved driveway entrances and speed humps in a matter of days. In traffic, outward visibility is so poor that you’d be wishing you were in a Picanto when trying to navigate rush hour. I dare you to park an Aventador in a standard parking bay at the local shopping mall just to see how many times someone whacks their door into your expensive paintwork. Don’t even get me started on sharply angled driveways or how the gearbox is so shite that 20 minutes into your morning commute will get you so irritated you had rather stayed home.

What’s even more disheartening though is the psychological torture of putting such a machine in conditions it was least intended for. WTF will you be benefiting from your 6.5 litre, V12 in the urban crawl? You’ll feel like a pillock because, deep down, you’ll know you ARE a pillock.

As good to drive as my 981 is, I always prefer my G20 for daily use because it’s better for the job. 992 GT3 usable on a daily basis? Conceivably, yes. Could you? Yes. In real life, would anyone? Yes, if they’re a pillock.
Hi Martinbo, I am not a native English speaker, but I enjoyed every word of your excellent explanations in what I consider to be great English. And I completely agree with you. Thank you for that

Don't get the whole discussion. To me it is crystal clear, that what makes a car "a Daily" has no clear formal common definition as it relates to, what the specific owner does on a typical day with the car!
This takes into account the infrastrucure (road quality, street width, parking lot layouts, ...), where he lives, his age/physical fitness, his family situation (how many people he needs to fit into his "Daily" on a statistical typical trip)

So - if you want to have a formal definition, you have to add a statistical backing. Like: A car is deemed being a Daily, if xx% of the population could do yy% of its trips/duties with this vehicle.
With such a definition, the Aventador would be ruled out for certain!

But there is no such definition. And you don't have to go to extremes! It is e.g. very obvious, that a M3 Limousine can be a perfect daily, while the M4 Coupe can't for the very same person.

Being a pillock for dailying a non-Touring GT3? Perhaps.

Dailying a Touring GT3 with a axle lift? Not so much a pillock, just someone who enjoys driving, has an incredibly strong and healthy back with no problems, and has very little qualms in seeing the resale value drop by accruing so many miles.

The GTS or trims below it seem better suited for the daily grind, but if you can put up with the compromises that come with the GT3, I wouldn't fault anyone with doing daily duty in a GT3, Touring or otherwise.

All my own personal experience/perspective -

I romanticized about commuting in a GT3. Till I got one. Between the heavy clutch, stiff ride, road noise, and usual US suburban/urban commute traffic and road conditions, I was soon disabused of any such notion. Any enjoyment is far too rare and fleeting. Best save the energy/miles for weekend drives on some backroads - which we have plenty of around.

991GT3 came close to being daily-able. But 992 GT3 is back to being hardcore. The spring rates are ~100/150 NM/mm, pretty much same as 991.2 RS. Can you drive it on usual US city roads. Yes. Is it enjoyable? No. Are there people doing it? Yes. This is a friend/acquaintance - https://www.instagram.com/p/C2EefOOOLLr/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==.
But he is a nutcase (in a good way), has 2 CGTs and a 4.0RS and warehouse of other Porsches. Is he the typical GT3 owner? No (AFAIK).

I have said it before, my E36 M3 is far more fun/practical on the commute/errands than any Porsche GT I have driven.

I think Kiki is Finnish, so I'm no way disparaging his English abilities, but you have to understand there are subtilities in language that can change the meaning of a sentance entirely. I have to have an ELPAC (English Language Proficiency testing for Air Traffic controllers) rating to do my job, measured from 1 to 6, with 4 or more needed to pass.

Yet you are unable to write this down without spelling errors ;)

But next time we'll ask Kiki to bring a lawyer to check the validity of the grammar.

As a relative to me had the Aventador, and Aventador SV after , and had few to many trips with him , I can confidently say that it's a perfectly daily driver

I've never even been in an Aventador, but I can safely say it's far from a PERFECT daily driver.

Because if you buy a supercar and drive it daily , you are a pillock or moron or show-off.

Although it's possible for a car to be an unsuitable daily and also be cheap to buy and run, most unsuitable dailies are expensive, and therefore there is no reason why that person couldn't afford a second, more practical car. *That* is the reason someone looks a pillock for driving a car in a city centre or other equally unsuitable location, because the only logical explanation for someone to drive around every day in stop start traffic, and negotiating car parks, is to show off.

When I ordered my R8 V10, I also bought a used, 15-year-old Ford Ka. I enjoyed driving that in city centres more than I did my R8.

So why buy a supercar then?

When you own a car, you don't *have* to drive it every day, you know?

Speaking of Aventadors, a few years ago I stayed at a hotel in Frankfurt, and in the underground car park there was a white Aventador with Swiss plates. I went back to the hotel a year later almost to the day, and the car was still parked there but now covered in a thick layer of dust.

Do you think I didn't know how to spell "subtleties" or "sentence", or do you think I made typos because I was rushing to post a message inbetween looking after my children, and then lost the ability to edit after fifteen minutes?

My AMG GTR, is one of the widest cars on the road.

Only the aventador is wider.

My wife refuses to drive it because its so wide, the bonnet so long, I cant see shit out the rear thanks to the rollcage and the spoiler, and the wife can see by me driving it around town and parking lots that its not a easy drive.

It doesnt fit through certain width restrictions, so I have to think about my route, it cannot fit two full sized suitcases in the boot for a 2 week vacation with the wife to the caribbean, one week yes its fine, softbags when touring across europe is fine.

Bought a sonos arc soundbar, doesnt fit in the boot.

Oh and the gearbox being in the back it gets hot, and so it wants to melt stuff, like chocolate bars.

And this is a car that in all purposes and effect is a grand tourer that can also track.

It aquaplanes in the wet with its 325 width tyres, and the rear likes to slide around when its 7 degrees or less. It gets terrible mpg in traffic and everyone looks at you.

And you want to tell me you can daily a aventador, behave.

Hehe, it was a joke relax.

Uhmmmm..... just be glad about that? You won't get returned a broken car. Letting your wife drive it at all is a brave move.

Yeah but for those errands you just send your PA. Or you order online. Or you just take your Range Rover.

Oh and the gearbox being in the back it gets hot, and so it wants to melt stuff, like chocolate bars.

Ok Finally! A real argument on why it's not a daily after two days of discussing!! No chocolate in the back!
Case closed.

As much as I don't want to reply to this topic anymore , I just can't stop after seeing your post.

Besides the level of cringe being to the roof , and the weird flex....

1. If your wife does not like to drive it , guess what : She is not the standard or definition of driving a daily car. She is just your wife that does not like that car. AGAIN ,SUBJECTIVE

2. Having a rollcage or not , you still have 2 perfectly usable side mirrors. If you feel it is not enough , it's only your capability as a driver to handle that situation. Many drivers can and only use the side mirrors , with absolutely no issue . X6 has awfull rear view mirror visibility , and it's a daily driver for most people.... AGAIN , SUBJECTIVE

3.Certain width restrictions is ALSO SUBJECTIVE . I have never heard of such places that can't fit an Aventador for ex.

4. Again , weird flex with that "driving an AMG GTR to a caribbean trip" . Who the heck drives even to the airport with an supercar. Have you heard of Uber? Taxi? Private Van (given the fact that you own a GTR ) ? NOT SUBJECTIVE , plain stupid.

5. Oh man...You sound like a Instagram "guru". Who the heck buys an Sonor Arc and takes it with him? Have you heard of DELIVERY? What year is it? NOT SUBJECTIVE , plain stupid.

Do you also take your fridge personally? hahaha

5. Oh man....FFS....I have never felt the heat in the Aventador. I'm pretty sure that not even in the GTR would not be a problem given the fact that WE ARE IN 2024 AND WE HAVE AC !!! AGAIN , SUBJECTIVE

6.Aquaplane? Hahahaha....Man , I had 315 in the X6 , and never aquaplaned . Guess what : YOU SHOULD DRIVE SLOWER WHEN IT RAINS....but I guess I am stupid doing that...hahaha

7. No , I will not behave.

You should behave with that weird flex. This is not Instagram

Ahhh you drive a SUV

So you have no first hand experience of a supercar.

Typical guy who says he would do X Y Z when he has never been in that position to put his money where his mouth is.

Its odd that all my pals with 720s and huracans all have daily drivers. A tiguan, and a golf.

Its odd you cannot fathom that when you have to adjust your plans or behaviour because of how impractical your car is, that you still argue it to be a daily driver.

And comparing 325 cup 2’s to your dune buggy x6 tyres LOL

P.S

You driving a x6 says alot about you, you want a coupe but dont want the impracticalities of a coupe.

Tell us more about daily driving supercars LOL

The GTR doesn't look tricky.

Now if it was a Black Series I would see your point. It looks mental, it's like comparing a 911 GT3 Touring with a GT3 RS.

Moved from the Porsche: Whats Next? thread since it's it's gone somewhat off topic...

I think it's reasonable to suggest that what you regard as a daily will likely depend how, and where, you spend your days.
Never better said, and I would add that sometimes you don't have a choice and you have to settle for things that go against your religion, like basic midsize pickups when you are living or working in rough terrain and countryside, knowing that they will break your back because no other option works

a BMW 5er is just as big, and the average SUV is bigger.

Yeah it's got a long hood, but it also has park distance control and maybe cameras

Looool. I drive vans daily. The company vans are a walk in the park compared to the GTR.

GTR i could have a police car behind me and I wouldnt be able to tell.

Also my TTRS, great visibility, can see everything, 700hp and a heavy paddle clutch and the wife drives that just fine.

Comparing a x5 to a low slung sportscar. Lol. You guys really aint driven exotica in the real world huh

X5 youre high up and can see everything.

GTR youre low and cant see shit. And the GTR is wider than the x5, on low profiles, vs dune buggy x5 tyres that you dont need to be too careful about kerbs with.

As for the clown who said drive slower when its wet for aquaplaning, another guy who has clearly never driving a high performance vehicle in the real world.

Having to drive through belgium in the pouring rain and having to go slower than the trucks and lorries because even at 30mph your aquaplaning isnt fun.

Leaving your house and thinking I have my lovely 720s/GTR/600lt sitting there but im gonna take my hatchback or 3 series because its less hassle again shows why they arent daily drivers.

Only dudes that have never owned these type of cars think they would daily drive them.

Like those guys who say, why did you buy X Y Z sportscars/supercar when you could have picked up a 2016 r8 v10 plus for £75k and then do a twin turbo conversion for £25k, had 1500hp and blow everything out the water and still have spent less than what you bought your car for.

But when it actually comes to spending their own hard earned they look at all the other criterias most of us do, reliability, resale, etc and all of a sudden a twin turbo r8 becomes a long distant dream

Quite a lot of nails hit on the head there, @Fastpaddy.

Forums are full of people who have opinions on how they would feel about hypothetical situations, and who have the luxury of not having to deal with the downsides.

I own two cars that wouldn't even be called supercars nowadays, what with the relentless progress car manufacturers have made over the years, yet they're by no means cars I want to take to the supermarket. Having a "daily" makes me enjoy them more, because it affords me the luxury of being able to *choose* when I drive them. If I only had one car to do it all, I would neither enjoy having a "supercar", or having a mundane regular car. I would find the supercar a stress every day, and I would resent the mundane car because I know I would rather own something else. However, knowing I have a couple of more exotic cars at home means I get to drive my 3 Series or C-Class without fear of missing out. That's something people who don't have this luxury imagine would be hard to deal with; driving around in something "boring" when you've got something special parked at home, yet it really isn't an issue.

Anyway, speaking of daily drives reminds me of this superb film, which some people may have seen. I watch it regularly because it's just a wonderful film.

I guess you've seen this, @Sunny ?

One car to do it all...
