Mazda2 2015 Mazda 2

The Mazda2 is a subcompact/supermini (B-segment) car manufactured and marketed by Mazda since 2002. An entry-level model of the brand in markets outside Japan, the Mazda2 is positioned below the Mazda3. The Mazda2 has also been marketed as the Mazda Demio (a name it kept in the Japanese market until 2019), while its direct predecessor was exported as the Mazda 121.

2015 Mazda2 interior cabin indirectly revealed
Design might not be final
Mazda has indirectly revealed the interior cabin of the all-new "2" set to be unveiled in the months to come.

Our colleagues from Drive.com.au had the opportunity to shortly test drive a prototype of the next generation Mazda2 at the company's Mine Proving Ground in Nagao, Japan. While the exterior was wrapped around in a full body camouflage to disguise the Kodo design, surprisingly Mazda didn't bother hiding the interior cabin which gives us the chance to analyze it.

As expected, the layout is simple with very few buttons and knobs as Mazda went for an uncluttered design as seen in the "3" and "6". As a matter of fact, it's actually more simplified compared to its larger brothers and interestingly there's only one center air vent. A free-standing touchscreen display has replaced most controls and there are many metallic accents providing a more premium feel along with a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel taken from the 3. As a reminder, this was a prototype so the production-ready model could look slightly different.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new Mazda2 is 160mm longer (at 4060mm), 25mm taller (at 1500mm) while width has remained the same at 1695mm. There's a more spacious cabin as a result of stretching the wheelbase by 80mm to 2570mm, providing more room especially in the front where the driver and passenger benefit from more headroom and shoulder room.

The prototype tested was a European version equipped with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine generating 75 PS (55 kW) and 135 Nm (100 lb-ft) sending power to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine will also be available in a higher state of tune (at least in Australia) with 107 PS (79 kW). A more economical 1.5-liter diesel with 105 PS (77 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) will be offered as well along with a 4-cylinder 1.3-liter gasoline motor – all kitted with SKYACTIV tech.

The all-new Mazda2 will come out in the next few months so look for a public debut in October at the Paris Motor Show.

The best Japanese car interior design I have seen that looks uncluttered and of desent design and quality. It's following the Audi, BMW and Mercedes simplicity of reducing buttons and including more things on the multimedia display

Will be introduced later this year
The first purported pictures of the 2015 Mazda2 / Demio have leaked to the web.

Previewed by the Hazumi concept, the production model has a familiar design which is closely echoes the Mazda3 and Mazda6. As a result, the hatchback has a prominent grille, curvaceous bodywork and distinctive headlights. The rear end is a little plain but features wraparound taillights, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and a black plastic rear bumper.

The two-tone interior is refreshingly upscale - in higher-end variants - as it boasts leather seats, a freestanding infotainment system and a heads-up display. We can also see circular air vents, metallic trim and easy to read gauges.

Mazda has been coy on performance specifications but engine options are slated to include:

A 1.3-liter SKYACTIV four-cylinder petrol
A 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol with outputs of 75 PS (55 kW) and 107 PS (79 kW)
A 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel with 105 PS (77 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft)

A great looking small car, probably the best looking small car to date. The interior has a fair old wack of Audi A1 in it, especially the dash, but that is the gold standard for small car interiors at the moment, so it's a good thing.

I hope the build some more powerful versions, the 145hp 2.0 petrol would be a nice fit IMO.

Definite Audi minimalist influence in the interior. Mazda is on a roll. With all these recent offering, I hope they truly find their feet on stable ground.

I like the direction they have gone in with the front grill treatment, in line with it's older brothers but i personally think it's the best executed yet.

nice, i like it (inside and out), the last gen mazda 2 got famous for dipping under 1 tonne of weight and because of that has been praised for being very fun and agile

so are there any specs on weight for this gen?

Not sure if those pics are deceptively good but that interior cabin quality and use of materials looks top notch. I'm really hopeful about the forthcoming MX5, I have a feeling that Mazda are going to produce something really special.

For the record of this new generation Mazdas,IRL this new one once again will not look as good as it does in pictures.Interior is very nice though.

Wonderful!!!! I love it! Mazda has the best looking asian cars, inside out. Lexus and Infiniti should take note how to make a clean, unclutered dash.

First drive review by Autoexpress:

With a totally new stylish look, new engines, sporty handling and improved trim levels, Mazda has placed it in the same playing field as the VW Polo and even the Audi A1. The car’s success will rest on how the market interprets its handling, ride comfort and interior quality and design flare, a combination of traits that have not been typical Mazda offerings up until now.

New Mazda 2 2014 review

Mazda has a lot riding on its all-new Mazda 2, so no wonder that the changes are so extensive. Boasting brand new SKYACTIV technologies that encompass the chassis, powertrains, body and suspension, the totally redesigned 2 is not just a pretty face. The attention to detail follows the car inside too with four new trim levels, improved materials, quality and refinement that make European rivals stand up and take notice. Hopefully Mazda can iron out niggling ride and handling issues before it arrives in the UK in early 2015.
