Golf [Article] Fastest ever Golf is officially unveiled and headed to production

Auto Motor und Sport is reporting that the sound of that blue Golf test car was definitely a 5 cylinder (as reported by multiple people at the track) Very interesting. Could VW be using Audi's 5 cylinder for the R400/R420?! It certainly fits under the bonnet as tuners Oettinger and PPH have shown.

Based on facelifted Golf VII
French media has managed to obtain some juicy details about the Volkswagen Golf R400 production version.

Volkswagen has already confirmed the Golf R400 concept will reach the assembly line and now it seems it will be based on the facelifted Golf VIIwhich is due around 2017. Only a handful of cars will ever be made as French website L'Automobile Sportive says production will be very limited and with a price to match. As a matter of fact, the magazine says it will actually be more expensive than the Audi RS3 Sportback which in Germany starts at €52,700.

The production car could receive the "R420" moniker as it is believed the concept's 400 PS (294 kW) output will be bumped to a mighty 420 PS (309 kW). We don't know for sure whether it's getting an uprated version of the 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter TFSI or the RS3's larger 5-cylinder, 2.5-liter motor. Regardless of the engine's identity it will send its power to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system through an unknown gearbox as Volkswagen said the concept's six-speed DSG isn't able to handle 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque.

If the higher output turns out to be true, expect the production version's performances to eclipse those of the concept which needed a mere 3.9 seconds until 62 mph (100 km/h) before topping out at an electronically-restricted 174 mph (280 km/h).

VW Golf R400 canned, engine will power future Audis

Teased two years ago in concept form at the Beijing Auto Show, the Golf R400 is no longer part of the firm's plans.
Initially confirmed by Volkswagen's Research and Development chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser, the hot hatch was supposed to slot above the Golf R in terms of power, performance and price, with its approximately 400 PS (395 HP) squeezed out of the 2.0-liter four-pot engine.

When Neusser was forced to resign in the wake of diesel emissions scandal, the project bit the dust as AutomotiveNews reports. However, since the Germans did a few tweaks to the EA888 engine, which was supposed to power the R400, its development won't be in vain as it will allegedly be used by future Audi models.

In the meantime, Volkswagen will keep focus on the next generation Golf R, which is expected after 2020. The compact high-performance car is believed to follow the recipe of the current model, only with more power and up to 300 lbs (136 kg) shed from its total weight.

This car clearly wasn't needed and it VW has much bigger problems now. They're getting killed in the SUV market and their cheating is going to cost them billions.

Well yeah they have some problems, but fairly small problems I would say, even when these problems cost them billions.
VW is on it's way to be the biggest car maker of the world for the 5th time in a row.

In Sweden the Clubsport version cost as much as the normal GTI. A good deal if you ask me.
Clusport comes with 265 hk and overboost function to 290 hp.

Want one so bad, as I'm pretty sure that it'll be a rocket ship but 53K is waaay too much for a hot hatch :( Sorry, but ditching it is the right decision, as it would just not be a viable business case

VW Golf R420 Prototype Spied Testing In Even Weirder Circumstances
Volkswagen Golf R420 testing continues, but why?
In September, Volkswagen made the odd decision to pull the R420 prototype out of the back of the garage for a run around the Nürburgring. Now, things have gotten even weirder because the one-off hot hatch made an appearance during the Scuderia Hanseat driving course at the Nordschleife. Why VW would run the machine at such an event is a complete mystery.
Until these most recent outings, we hadn't seen the R420 testing since September 2017. In general, the machine looks nearly identical to the Golf R, but the pair of oval exhaust outlets at the back identify this hot hatch as something special. Plus, VW's R420 prototype wears the WOB CB 242 license plate, which makes spotting the car a little easier.
The R420 is a prototype for a production version of VW's Golf R400 concept. It packs the 2.5-liter inline-five cylinder engine from vehicles like the Audi RS3 and reportedly makes 414 horsepower (309 kilowatts). All-wheel drive makes this significant amount of power more manageable.
The R420 project made it far enough into development to get at least one test mule. In the wake of Dieselgate, VW needed to cut costs, and an ultra-hot version of the Golf R was easy for the company to axe because the RS3 was such a similar vehicle.
It's not clear why the R420 test mule is hitting the Nordschleife once again, but the laps hint that at least someone within VW still has a passion for the machine. It's still possible that the automaker could put the vehicle on sale, but the model would likely need to be a limited run edition as a sendoff for the current generation Golf. The next gen of the popular hatchback begins production in June 2019 and goes on sale in the fourth quarter of the year.
