They calculated a high-volume seller based on 3er would be much more profitable than low-volume seller based on 7er (CS) / X5 (X7) , or an alu/CF space-frame roadster.
Imagemaking cars are not a priority right now. Profit is. No profit = big troubles. Eg. official BMW AG goal for 2009 is to stay profitable. Quite modest goal. And as insiders say, it will be quite hard to achieve (if the crisis continues - which according to the forecasts, it will).
Do not think BMW alone is in trouble. Everyone is. Yet BMW are the quickest making adoptations, and being loud about them. Others either lagging behind, or doing it quitely.
And about the CS, the production of it would be certainly loss making, but in terms of image you build up this is still peanuts (see above higher prices for your base products). It could have been a great promotion stunt as being a luxurious sports coupé including the latest state of the art efficient dynamics stuff.

Btw, BMW CEO Reithofer confirms although CS & X7 have been canceled, the baby-PAS based on the next 3er platform is still on agenda.
My info: indeed it is, and it's called PAC (Progressive Activity Coupe)
Sorry, but i can't understand the decisions the BMW Board makes the last month. I am completely dissatisfied. Cancelling the Concept CS but keeping the PAC? Sorry, but this is getting worse day by day...
It's not like BMW are going bankrupt if they build a M3 CSL. They have to knowledge and money to build sporty and intresting cars we can dream about. BMW are just being sissy.

Sure, but don't they make more profit from low-volume but high price cars. Those cars are way more expensive plus they are mostly loaded with extras, and i think that with those extras is where car makers make big money.
Don't tell me that Volvo doesn't have less that 90% profit from the 120€ they charge for an extra crappy cup-holder... Same goes for everyone.
Eni said:Regarding iProject: most likely an iconic & legendary Isetta brand will be revived - giving the car an instant iconic status compared to rivals (giving it instant image to direcly rival iconic smart car). Isetta tech will also be futured in the designated MINI & BMW models. Eg. MINI E, BMW 1er eDrive.
What's the point of producing an imageboosting car if nobody will buy it. The car would be a business disaster, pushing the company in the smaller profits or even loss.
Eni said:It's not a secret most new cars from BMW in the future fill be based on 1er / 3er platform - since this platform is most rentable & profitable.
I started to love BMW for building intresting and sporty cars. I have no intrest in geek cars. PAS, V3 is no intrest at all and they will never be a sporty car.
I pity the fools falling for these kind of BMW products.
