DETROIT - The head of General Motors' Cadillac luxury division said on Thursday the brand will shrink its lineup of sedans and expand its offerings of sport utility vehicles and hybrid and electric vehicles in response to market shifts.

Expanding Cadillac's global sales is central to GM's overall profit strategy, and Cadillac has reported a 27 percent increase in worldwide sales through the first half of the year.

However, in the United States, now the brand's second largest market behind China, Cadillac sales are down 1.6 percent and combined sales of the brand's four sedan models have plummeted 16.3 percent through the first half of the year.

That has forced GM to order layoffs at two Michigan factories that build Cadillac cars, and raised questions about the long term future of the plants.

"We have to rebalance our sedan portfolio," Johan de Nysschen told Reuters in interview, offering new details about the strategy.

Cadillac will not directly replace the current XTS, CTS or ATS sedans when they end their life cycles in 2019, he said. Instead, Cadillac will use a single new car called the CT5 to appeal to consumers shopping for sedans priced between $35,000 and $45,000. New versions of the CT6 sedan will be offered to customers who want a larger car starting at $50,000.

Sources had told Reuters last week that GM was considering ending production on six cars including the CT6 and XTS and models from Chevrolet and Buick. That report now appears only half-right as far as Cadillac is concerned.

The new CT5 will be built at a factory near Lansing, Michigan, that currently builds the slow-selling Cadillac ATS and CTS models. A small luxury sedan to compete with the Audi A3 will be built in the same plant, de Nysschen said.

Cadillac will offer more SUVs, starting with a compact model called XT4, followed by a larger SUV with three rows of seats due by 2019 to compete with vehicles such as Volvo's current XC90 model.

Volvo, owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, scored a public relations coup by announcing plans earlier this month to power all its vehicles with either hybrid or all-electric technology starting in 2019. The move challenges Tesla, which has eclipsed more established brands with tech savvy luxury buyers.

Cadillac has plans "not dissimilar to what Volvo has announced," with more electrified vehicles launching in the second half of the next decade, de Nysschen said.

To stay abreast of Tesla and others in the industry's technology race, Cadillac will launch later this year its Super Cruise system that enables hands-free driving up to 85 miles per hour.

GM Cadillac chief: New CT5 will replace 3 sedans; EVs coming

Seems like they're not willing to concede that the CT6 is also a flop just yet. They're finally publicly embracing the fact the Escalade defines the modern Cadillac brand.

Cadillac has presented a number of highly desirable concept cars. The Escala Concept pictured above is but one stunning example.

Interesting strategy, but I don't see it working. Just giving up on sedans isn't the answer, better execution is. This CT5 won't do any better and then what? All SUVs? Better pray gas prices hold steady.

Yep, yet they won't build any of them. It's retarded. They show the Escala on TV and then buyers come and find nothing. They come up with great names and concepts and then name the lackluster car the CT6. Just plain dumb.

If they built those concepts, stunning exterior, high quality stunning interiors, Cadillac would be the talk of the market and buyers would come running.

The solution(s) to the sedan problem is simple (imo), yet after more a decade of introducing desirable concepts and weak production versions, they still don't seem to get it.

1)Take the design from a concept and actually implement it into production specifications. Forget about the 15 year old long headlight/taillight design language.

2) There has to be absolutely zero interior pieces shared with a Chevy or a Buick. You can't charge MB and BMW money for a car with Chevy Cruze parts used liberally. If not, go back to undercutting the competition in price.

3) Give CUE the biggest refresh ever, or scrap it.

4) Actually make a sedan with a roomy interior for it's respective segment. This will redraw the attention of livery/limousine companies.

I am just sick and tired of seeing these stunning concepts from Cadillac and then being so disappointed by the dull and boring production cars.

What will it take for GM to get its act together? Cadillac was once a truly respected brand around the world ....even though it was a rarity to see one outside North America.

Will we have to wait until Cadillac is sold to the Chinese or Germans before they finally produce the excellent vehicles we know they are capable of? God it must be frustrating to work for Cadillac.

Don't let what happened to the British motor industry happen to the US.

There Germans would never touch Cadillac lol. I doubt the Chinese would either. Maybe the Indians.

Don't count the Chinese out, they love their Buicks and China-specifcation Cadillacs.

I think a divorce from GM is needed to allow for real change of strategy at this point..... but the Chevy Tahoe-based Escalade is their bread and butter (more than that actually).

I think it's kind of sad that they put so much engineering effort into the CTS-V to match and/or exceed the German compeition in term of performance, but people still aren't buying. That's when you know somethings gotta change...

The real problem is 'corporatocracy'. I know Cadillac has never been independent (it was originally created by Ford) but it seems the corporate culture at GM is just hindering Cadillac's potential.

I suspect things are similar at Ford: Jaguar, Range-Rover, Aston Martin, and Volvo (all previously owned by Ford) have all improved dramatically under new ownership.

I agree. GM just doesn't know how to do luxury at the level of the Germans, British or Japanese at this point. Performance is not an issue, but the they never get the luxury car details right.

M

Now that has some nice proportions and a good stance. Interior, interior, interior Cadillac. Interior!! I know the drive/performance will be good.

M

If there over 10% of GM parts bin buttons and switches, I guarantee it will be yet another Cadillac sedan flop. Hopefully they got the memo by now.

CUE has to be tossed unless there’s a radical revision.

Lots of camo yet, but looks good. It will be a D-class car(C-class, 3-BMW rival). Its interior will be inspired by Buick Avista's interior.

Looks like the next gen CT6 will be slightly reduced to fit in the E-class/5-series segment. I've heard this before, but now I'm sure. That would be logical. Plus there will be a space for the cars, which will be above the CT6. (CT7/CT8).

Question is will there ever be CT7 or CT8..rumors are that it could appear in 2021..but that could change.

Also if CT6 takes the role of E class and 5 series fighter and CT5 go against 3 series and C class what will CT5-V go against? An M3 and C AMG or M5 and E 63 AMG (since there are no plan for CT6-V ...for now)?

It's all the silliest possible strategy. All they're doing is reshuffling the same cars over and over while changing the names. Why not make the ATS and CTS and CT6 better cars and keep those nameplates? All this changing around every few years does nothing for brand image/awareness and it only confuses the consumer even more. American car makers are so short sighted it isn't even funny. CT5, CT6 and then CT7/8 is the same as the ATS, CTS, CT6 now and if they aren't going break away from the same old tired GM interior designers and materials, it will be 3 more failures with 3 new names.

There will be both: CT7/CT8. That is 100 percent. They are already at the designing stage.

Don't know about the MCE CT6, but the next one will get a V version.
What I know for sure, is that there will be a turbo V8 in the 19'CT6. It will be available as soon as they'll show the facelifted car: this year.
Will be enough for the current gen.
The 7 series also don't have the M7 versions to fight the S63. But they do have the 760. Maybe, the same will be with the current CT6. I know it is getting a powerful V8. I just don't know how it will be called.
The CT5 is a D-class car. No doubt about it. Of coure, it will go against the M3, C63 and so on.
