Edmunds - Comparison Test: 2010 Audi S4 vs. 2009 BMW 335i

Introduction

Given all the praise heaped on the BMW 3 Series over the years, we can't blame you for thinking there's more to the story. We've heard all the conspiracy theories, most of them involving checks in large denominations from Munich.

This might seem believable to a certain segment of the population, but there's a far less interesting truth behind all those wins: The BMW was the best car. Sure, certain rivals often upped their game in one area or another, but the 3 Series always put it all together in a way that made it better.

So now the 2010 Audi S4 is here to take another shot. It's all-new this year and the old V8 is gone. There's now a supercharged V6 in its place, along with a lower price designed to better align the S4 with the BMW 335i.

The BMW 3 Series received a face-lift of its own last year. It was mostly minor trim changes and the like, but we're told that iDrive thing was tweaked again, too (oh, lovely).

Sounds like a fair fight, no?

Hope You Got a Bonus This Year
Probably best to get the cost issue out of the way up front. These are not the entry-level sport sedans their names might suggest. The BMW 3 Series may start just below $34,000 on the low end, but once you add the 300-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine — and you do want to do that — the base price jumps to $40K.

That doesn't include much in the way of features, either, so our 2009 BMW 335i test car includes extras like a Sport package and a Premium package and a Cold Weather package and various other options. Final sticker price: $49,320.

And if that number sounds steep, then consider that the 2010 Audi S4 is just getting started at nearly $46,000. Of course, Audi likes to point out that the S4's base price includes a long list of standard features, and it does, but our test car also had a Toyota Yaris worth ($12,425) of additional features, which pushes the grand total to over $59K.

All this makes for a considerable price difference between the two cars, but on paper they actually match up quite well. Both use 3.0-liter engines with forced induction and both get standard six-speed manual gearboxes. The Audi also adds all-wheel drive, of course. There's an all-wheel-drive version of the 335i, too, but you can't combine it with a sport suspension, so the standard rear-wheel-drive version is a better choice for performance.

And Now for Some More Interesting Numbers
At those prices these sedans better do something special, and they don't disappoint. Say, for instance, you like to go very fast in a straight line. These sedans do that quite well. We know; we tested them.

The BMW is the slower of the two, yet it still turns in a 0-60-mph time of 5.3 seconds (4.9 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) and runs through the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds at 103.8 mph. That's what 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque in a 3,607-pound sedan will do for you.

The Audi is saddled with an extra 377 pounds, so it helps that its new supercharged V6 produces a healthy 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. This is enough to deliver a 0-60-mph time of 4.9 seconds (4.6 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) and a 13.2-second quarter-mile at 106.1 mph.

How impressive are these numbers? Consider that the quickest of the new American muscle coupes, the 426-hp Chevrolet Camaro SS, turns about the same numbers down the drag strip as the Audi.

Fast in a Nice Way
You don't spend $50K on a European sport sedan to embarrass Chevys at stoplights, though. OK, maybe you secretly dream about doing just that, but for the other 99 percent of the time you want an ultra-refined, indestructible engine that makes all the right sounds.

We've noted in the past that BMW's twin-turbo inline-6 is just such an engine. Surprisingly strong at low rpm and dead solid all the way to its redline of 7,000 rpm, BMW's force-fed straight-6 has no real faults. Or at least, it feels that way until you drive the S4.

The Audi V6 is also staggeringly refined and full of torque, yet it delivers its burst of power even quicker than the BMW. It jumps off idle thanks to its fast-acting supercharger and doesn't fall flat once all the boost is dialed in. Instead, it charges all the way to its own redline of 7,000 rpm on a big flat mountain of torque. There's no buzzing or coarseness along the way, either. It feels like the BMW engine, only with an aftermarket chip already installed.

Couple the nearly flawless engine with the S4's nicely weighted clutch and finger-light shift action and the Audi couldn't feel more perfect running through the gears. OK, a deeper and less raspy exhaust note would be nice, but we're nitpicking.

For me the sad thing here is that there is no Mercedes C-Class variant worthy of this contest.

The S4 is such a great car, it is nothing for me but still... awesome. Audi really seems to have gotten the engine right this time and the rear biased 4WD is a hit.

The only thing that bothers me is the price. The difference down to the 335i is $10k! The difference up to a very nicely speced M3 is only about $4k.

Limited-slip rear differential and Adjustable suspension are what 335i need if it want a chance against S4. Maybe next 335i gets it :eusa_pray Right now S4 is one shoe to big for the 335i. Yes, 335i has a better exterior design than S4 but a pretty face isn't enough

The new S4 is a great car, and next to it (even with the facelift) the E90 looks quite old. Nevertheless the bright red tone isn't the best colour for the 3-series and in the end I would choose the 335i (well even more a 335d) over the S4 anyday. For the price difference you can get some stunning 19' rims and Individual interior for the BMW…

I'm sorry, but a LSD and a new supercharged V6 is not enough to sway me partly cos it looks like every other Audi. Nice car though.

S4 is a real hit!

The facelifted 3-series looks a real pig in real life!

The A4 is perfectly balanced, simply gorgeous!

I'm still surprised the Audi is winning this contest, not because it isn't capable, but because of the price. Car and Driver just did the same comparo and the S4 won there too.

S4 for the Win
So the 2010 Audi S4 finished well ahead of the 2009 BMW 335i this time around. Have our biases changed? Did we want to shake things up? Are we partial to canary yellow cars? Not a chance.

Like every comparison test before it, this one comes down to which car puts it all together in the most compelling package. We drove the cars in every imaginable situation, and every time someone got out of the Audi he was struggling to find a flaw. It was much the same way with the 335i, but driven back to back, the Audi feels a step ahead.

Slightly faster, easier to push hard and more comfortable on the inside, the 2010 Audi S4 is as good as it gets when it comes to sport sedans in this price range. It's a lofty range, but if you're going to spend that kind of money, you might as well get what you pay for.

Thank You Edmunds! Finally someone has actually observed that the 3 series is not the Holy Angel that everyone believes it is...I would have preferred to see the C-class do it, but the A4 will do just fine. I've waited so long for this moment ever since the G35 beat in a few years ago. I can finally have a good night sleep for once.

notice the s4 beat the 335 by more than the car and drivers....car and driver put every option on the car...except the sticky 255s. In this test the braking beat the 335 by 2 feet, vs. the other rags reverse finding, as well the acceleration times were more convincing of a win in this test.

335 got 20 points on price....lucky it made some gains somewhere.

Lol, you sound like, as a child someone shoved a 3 series exhaust pipe up the wrong hole (not that there is a right hole for shoving exhaust pipes). But I am happy you can at last put that behind you get your good night's sleep.

This is my favourite class and I've driven almost all the 3er, C and A4 with almost all engines and body types.. so.. I can say there is something Holy in this particular BMW. The competitors.. hmm I cannot call them competitors. BMW 335i performance with BMW power boost or the new one with a single turbo will do the job for me. The 3er is just an amazing car I preffer it over every other BMW I've owned including the M5 if it's M3. Mine was only 318d for daily use but I cryed when those bastards stole it and it's the car I'll always love. Forever in my heart Lubima.
That car is just too much inside me to stand what HoH is saying sorry a bit too emotional maybe...

Yeah, I agree to 100%. The S4 is a looker, but yet e bit boring. And still it looks better then the E90. But hey, let's be proud cause these both cars are really amazing!

It's a bit stupid to compare standard top-engined 3er (335i) with special version of A4 (=S4). Not the same class.

Why not comparing S4 to M3 then instead? :t-hands:

Yes, M3 is just that above S4 than S4 is above 335i. Not comparable.

Interesting (and only fair - also price wise) comparison will be S4 vs 335i with full PerformanceParts options + Power kit (20HP & 50Nm more). Still waiting for such test.

PS: I still understand why some of you think of LEDs as something utterly modern? :t-hands: I thougjt only kids have obssesion with tiny bright lights like LEDs ... But obviouls boys will be boys forever. :usa7uh::D

Come on guys , if there is one thing 335i beats the S4 with, its the design. Best looking car in the segment particulary with performance kit.

There goes the GCF BMW committee right on schedule. How can anyone dog the "Precious & Holy" 3 series? Something must be wrong...they must be child like to talk against such a car!

I am hard on the 3 series because it deserves it. This is not me just "hating" on the car. I've actually driven the current 3 series and was not blown away at all. Ever since I joined GermanCarFans (Before most of you even knew the website even existed) there has been post after post of how glorious the 3 series was. Like it was the next best thing since the invention of the hamburger. A few years ago I decided to try the car out, see if BMW was really worth all the attention that its fans give it.

So I go to this BMW event out in Maryland and they let me drive the 3 series (along with a few others 5 series, 7 series etc.). The car handling was decent and drove fairly well, but it was no "huge" difference from my friends Mazda 3 sport. Yes, the luxury features were nice, especially the clock window reflection. Other then that it performed just like any other entry level sedan. I saw no reason in this world how Car and Driver could call it a 10 best or for it to win every comparison test. Matter of fact I was even less impressed with it compared to the G35 I tested. Only thing I can say is that it handled a little better then the "previous" C-class. I will give it that.

It seems as though Journalist want to keep up a trend that any comparison test the 3 series is in it should win. From what I felt, that should not have been the case at all. I just appreciate Edmunds and Motor Trend (a few years ago) standing up and actually noticing that the 3 series is not "All that".

Then again, if you want to believe that the 3 series is the king of the world good for you. But as HighestOfHigh (A veteran known for speaking his mind not busy trying to make online buddies and not sticking with what's popular), I have an obligation to tell the truth.

Now in all fairness, I will say that the "current" 5 series was OUTSTANDING and it handled far better then the "previous" E-class (I have not driven the new one). I was impressed with every aspect of that vehicle except for the design. So I'm not BMW hating, just putting the 3 series on the spot.
