Putting the same exact styling on 2 totally different platforms with different proportions is actually braindead activities. Definitely better than what they were doing before with shared platforms, but styling should reflect the platform.

It didn't work out for Mercedes with their EQ. So why would BMW shed fire to its own strategy which worked brilliantly so far? People buy a 5 Series because it looks the same no matter the drivetrain. They are not interested in so-called futuristic blobfish stylings.

Styling a car based on its platform doesn’t mean make it look like an ugly blob. The NA0 looks great because you can clearly see the Neue Klasse design language was made for that platform, the G84 is what looks awkward.

You can use the same themes and stuff sure but literally having all the lines be exactly the same when the proportions are different is so bad. Proportions are everything and where lines go depend on the proportion of the car. Aston Martin and Porsche follow the rule of thirds heavily in design, and BMW used to as well especially in the front end. If you are gonna be copying and pasting the same exact styling on different shaped cars it’s just not possible to have as a cohesively styled car as you are stretching and pulling different areas of the car.

Mercedes didn't have the same styling on two different platforms, clearly (if you're responding to Tuffode).

Mercedes and BMW are now converging on what works best going forward though. ICE's on one platform, EVs on another, similar (but not exact same) styling in each class. The whole purpose is to avoid compromised vehicles - BMW knows dedicated platforms are better but made the best interim play for this previous time period. No one said that the future has to include blobby designs.

Quite difficult to tell NA0 and G50 apart, except the front overhang, higher bonnet line and the greenhouse line towards the back door. It looks better on the G50 with vastly reduced front overhang and typical beautiful BMW proportions.

A long bonnet has the ability to make every car look great. The importance of proportions, literally.

Agree...as long as it is not overdone. Examples of which being this Jaguar 00 concept and the Maybach 6 concepts and the R190 AMG GT/GTC.

That sexy proportion of the G50 is a one huge advantage over the NA0.

Its not amazing, but this to me captures the aggression of a BMW, whilst keeping the more modern lines and elements.

I dunno, what do you all think? To me, this kind of approach would be more unmistakeable if it popped up behind me in the rear view mirror. Where the other NK design approach looks a lot more generic.
