Global sales through August 2012: Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz

Yes, when it comes to premium car manufacturer (group) ... But IMO with further boost of Audi & Porsche (with Macan & Pajun) sales VAG may sometimes become #1 premium manufacturer / group. Although BMW also have abituous plans with further MINI & BMW i expansion, not to mention core BMW brand models expansion.

Mr. Reithofer looks so funny, as if to say : Mwahaha Audi , despite all your flaunting of late BMW is still ahead.
Does anyone know what BMW and Audi got their golden steering wheel awards for??

This struggle for supremacy will continue forever. As for including Mini sales into BMW's figure because the A1 is in Audi's is a silly argument, the A1 is an Audi and the Mini isn't a BMW in the same way as a Rolls Royce isn't a BMW.

As I said it's only a matter of time rather than if.

If you'd read my post I state MINI hatchback sales for 2011, and, the A1 is a direct competitor of the MINI.

I am not disagreeing for the sake of it but you are wrong, if this were the case BMW wouldn't be readying their own direct A1 rival, I love the Mini but compared to the A1 it doesn't have the quality premier feel that I reckon the new BMW will offer.

So once it arrives we will then be able to include its sales figures and compare.

There will be a BMW sub-1er hatch to rival A1 directly. MINI has nothing to do with BMW vs Audi sales battle. Yet it has to do a lot with BMW Group (MINI, BMW, Rolls-Royce) vs VW Group (Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti) battle for #1 premium manufacturer.

Just like you, I am not disagreeing for the sake of it.
But this is my point: The MINI is 100% BMW developed, so can be considered a "BMW" of sorts.

I dont see what you mean when you say " if this were the case " ? And the rest of your comment is beside the point

If you were to ask the Mini development team I am quite sure they see themselves as independent of BMW. Let's say we will agree to disagree on this point.;)

In Europe I noticed Audi's EVERYWHERE as well. In the same vein as how common Toyota or Ford is out here, it seemed. In the U.S, aside from the A4 who's not a huge seller comparatively itself, they're somewhat rare, while M-B and BMW are the ubiquitous/generic luxury car sightings.

It's also like comparing Sweden/Denmark with Doha/Dubai. In Sweden, you see tons and tons of Audis, but in the Middle East, BMW and M-B are like you say, the generic luxury car sightings. That's also why I feel so special in my Q5 over there :)

At least a Lexus is a very rare sight :D

BMW sees AWD 3-Series as key to topping Mercedes in U.S. sales

BMW is optimistic that the addition of all-wheel drive to its popular 3-Series model will help rally the company past rival Mercedes-Benz to become the United States' best-selling luxury brand for the second straight year.

BMW topped Mercedes in total U.S. luxury sales last year, but a freshened Mercedes lineup combined with the lack of an all-wheel drive 3-Series model saw BMW slip to the No. 2 spot early in 2012. BMW has been in Mercedes' rear view mirror ever since, but BMW expects that to change by the time the calendar flips.
“We were lacking cars for three or four months, now we are fueling up,” Ludwig Willisch, head of BMW’s U.S. Operations, told Bloomberg.
Although BMW's redesigned 3-Series has been on the market for most of the year, a lack of all-wheel drive has hampered sales in typically strong 3-Series markets like New York and Boston where winter weather is a top concern.
Through August BMW has recorded 164,636 U.S. deliveries, just trailing Mercedes-Benz' 168,462 U.S. sales.

Its going to be another horse race. I don't think the awd 3 is going to pull BMW ahead this year. Mercedes' GL, GLK and continued strong sales of the C and ML might take MB to the top this year. What may happen is that Lexus may come in at the last minute. The new ES is EVERYWHERE all of sudden.

I don't think the awd 3 is going to pull BMW ahead this year.

Perhaps it will.

The early-year stumble may have been the result of offering the Munich-based brand’s top-selling model without a four-wheel drive version, popular in cold-winter markets such as New York and Boston that are chock-full of luxury-car buyers.

“We were lacking cars for three or four months, now we are fueling up,” Ludwig Willisch, head of BMW’s U.S. operations, said last week in an interview

About half of the 3 Series sedans sold in the U.S. are all- wheel drive, BMW said. In the northeast, for example, it’s 80 percent. For many customers, the all-wheel-drive option has become as much a requirement as an automatic transmission, Willisch said.

And there is still a brand new X1 just being launched ... A completely new model introduced to US market.
