MB Australia talks about a six cylinder diesel. :)

Mercedes-Benz ute to be the most powerful in its class
Six-cylinder power could result in some of Australia’s most expensive utes.

Mercedes-Benz plans to make a splash when it enters the local ute market by offering a model with more grunt than its rivals.

Speaking with Drive at the launch of the brand's latest Vito and Valente, Mercedes-Benz Vans managing director Dianne Tarr says the brand plans to put a powerful six-cylinder diesel engine under the bonnet of the upcoming model.

The ute has been designed to fit the 3.0-litre V6 diesel from the new S-Class limousine or GLE-class SUV, a motor that makes 190kW and 620Nm - well more than the 147kW and 470Nm Ford's Ranger ute.

"We are looking at the V6 passenger car engine and more than likely it would be that," Tarr says.

"But I don't know what the development on the car side, in terms of engines, will be by the time the ute comes out.

"Whatever we see in that V6 space will probably be adopted into the pickup."

The brand is also considering the use of its own petrol powerplant along with the possibility of sourcing Nissan power from the latest Navara that shares its core construction.

Mercedes-Benz insiders say the ute will not be a badge engineering exercise in a similar vein to Ford's Ranger and the Mazda BT-50, but will instead be a proper Mercedes product with the brand's own drivelines, technology and premium feel.

As such, top end versions of the ute may also prove to be the most expensive in Australia.

Mercedes-Benz says their pickup truck will be truly premium

Based on Nissan NP300 / Navara
The Daimler-owned marque has described their upcoming mid-size pickup truck as being a truly premium product that will be a "real Mercedes."

Back in March this year, Mercedes-Benz took us by surprise when they disclosed plans to launch a pickup truck and shortly after that they announced it will be built by Nissan and based on the Navara. They also said it won't be a "fat cowboy truck for North America" and won't compete with the big names from Ford, General Motors and Ram as they admit it would be a difficult task to battle in the full-size segment.

Instead, they plan on introducing a mid-size truck which according to Daimler board member Thomas Weber will be significantly different than the Navara with a bespoke design to "meet Mercedes criteria" and obviously with a price to match what will be the "first pickup truck from a premium manufacturer." Consequently, it will be significantly more expensive than the Navara, Amarok and Ford Ranger once it will be out before the end of the decade.

CarAdvice believes the vehicle's power will come from a Mercedes-Benz engine, possibly the V6 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 258 PS (190 kW) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque which is used in some of their passenger cars, such as the GLE 350 d 4MATIC.

It could go on sale as early as 2018 and will be assembled by Nissan at Renault's Cordoba plant in Argentina as well as at Nissan's factory in Barcelona, Spain.

Local testing for 'Benz ute
Australian development work to inform looming Mercedes-Benz ladder-frame utility, with evaluation likely to begin next year

Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific will play a role in the development of the Mercedes-Benz's new Nissan Navara-based utility, with local engineers to begin work with prototypes in the not-too-distant future.

Speaking at the recent launch of the new Mercedes-Benz Vito van and Valente people-mover in Sydney, Mercedes-Benz PR chief David McCarthy said Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific would play a part in the prototype's evolution.

"The really important thing here is we are going to be doing local testing [of the new ute]," he said.

"It [testing] hasn't begun yet but hopefully it will start next year."

Mercedes-Benz first went public with its plans for the model in March, also releasing a teaser sketch (pictured), but the company has been working on the Nissan Navara-based offering for a number of years.

"It's not like we're starting from absolute scratch," said McCarthy.

"A lot of the work has already been done but we [Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific] will have input and we'll do some testing that will feed back into the finished product."

Mercedes-Benz approached the Renault-Nissan Alliance to source a starting point for the new model which – according to an earlier CAR Magazine report and following standard 'Benz nomenclature – will be called the GLT.

While the vehicle will be based on a frame taken from Nissan's new NP300 Navara, McCarthy stressed that the finished product would be a true Mercedes-Benz in every other respect.

"We're sharing a platform with Nissan so think frame rails [only] – the suspension tuning, the four-wheel drive system, the engine, the interior, the styling, the safety kit will all be ours," he said.

"This won't be a Holden Nova/Toyota Corolla. It is going to be a Mercedes-Benz ute, and it is being built and designed with those unique Mercedes-Benz qualities."

The finished GLT will be available in a variety of body styles, including dual-cab, and offered in low, mid and high-range grade trims. It will be produced in Nissan production facilities in Cordoba, Argentina, and Barcelona, Spain. The Argentine plant will supply vehicles to markets in the Americas, including the USA should it decide to accept the model, while the Spanish plant will handle production for other world markets, including Australia.

Using the Nissan Navara base has effectively allowed Mercedes-Benz to fast-track the model to market, although this isn't the first time the three-pointed star has investigated this path. It was previously looking to release a Navara-based ute as early as 2017, before those plans – which also involved the adoption of the Navara's engine – were shelved.

Apparently the engines failed to meet in-house validation criteria for noise, vibration and harshness.

McCarthy says the decision to use an existing frame is a logical one.

"That makes sense because other than the G Wagon, which is a completely different vehicle, Mercedes-Benz doesn't actually have the experience in that area and Nissan does," he said.

"Nissan has come up with a new vehicle and we're going to make it into a Mercedes-Benz. Australia is unique in many ways, whether it's trucks, cars or vans, and we [Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific] want to do as much as we can to make sure that Australia has as much input [as possible] – and not just in specification, but in terms of the capabilities of the vehicle."

McCarthy said the level of interest generated by the impending model was "extraordinary", and that it would, when available, satisfy a very real demand.

"Mercedes-Benz effectively started prestige SUVs with the ML, not discounting the original Jeep Wagoneer, and for utes we thinks there's a real market [for the GLT]," he said.

Indeed, that market ran to over 170,000 units here in Australia in 2014, with 133,566 of them accredited to a four-wheel-drive format.

While Mercedes-Benz will have its work cut out for it in chasing down Australia's top-sellers like Toyota's HiLux and Ford's Ranger, it will certainly be drawing its sights on Volkswagen's Amarok, which accounted for over 8000 new registrations last year.

While Mercedes-Benz had previously flagged a four-year timeline to bring the new ute to showroom floors, McCarthy said the model might arrive a little bit earlier.

"Hopefully it [availability] won't stretch to 2019; 2018 would be good," he said.

Mercedes' decision on U.S. pickup due next year
Verdict to come before design freeze of truck in development

FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz is still mulling a pickup for the U.S., and has lengthened the timetable for a decision.

Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, says a decision will come in eight to 10 months. It had been expected by the end of this year.

"The product is still very fluid," Cannon said at the auto show here. "We've got time to make this decision, so we're not hurrying with it. We want to make sure the product fits this market's needs. If it doesn't, we're not bringing it -- I can tell you that."

5aece5b65f2fe3634dfa27a213cfeefa._.webp

Cannon: Not rushing decision

Cannon noted that the midsize pickup, a joint effort between parent company Daimler AG and Nissan, is being developed for other parts of the world. A decision for the U.S. would come before design freeze, Cannon said. That would allow U.S. product planners to have some influence on the pickup if U.S. sales get the green light.

The main question for Cannon is whether Mercedes can add value to the segment. The pickup would have to be pitched as a lifestyle vehicle, not a work truck.

Tradespeople "probably don't want a Mercedes-Benz on the front because they'd be worried about the statement that's making to their clients," he said. But plenty of Mercedes customers also have a pickup in their garage because they like the trucks' image and flexibility. And offering a pickup would expand Mercedes' portfolio.

"For us, it's about finding where people want to migrate and making sure we've got products that meet that need," Cannon said.

Still, the midsize pickup segment has shrunk dramatically since the early 2000s, Cannon said. While new entries from General Motors are increasing the segment's volume and the truck under consideration by Ford would provide another boost, he said, it's off a much lower base of sales than for larger pickups.

Cannon noted that no one in the company is saying Mercedes-Benz USA has to take the pickup.

"You don't come into a market that's highly established to just be an also-ran and just put the badge on the front," he said. "So if we cannot bring the Mercedes-Benz attributes to the segment, then we won't."

More details on the Mercedes-Benz pickup emerge
1a58b77955cf567b345ccbea5c7f0033.webp

New details suggest Mercedes-Benz could offer its forthcoming pickup in multiple trims to work on the job or be a luxury truck. The model's launch is still years away, but Australia's CarAdvice got the insider info from an anonymous attendee at a design forum.

Mercedes reportedly plans three trims for the pickup to span a wide breadth of customers' needs. The base model would be a contractor-grade work truck with few frills, optional all-wheel drive, and a 2.3-liter four-cylinder dieselwith 188 horsepower. The mid-level version would use the same engine but have more amenities. Finally, the top one would pile on luxury features and get a six-cylinder diesel with around 255 horsepower. According to CarAdvice's insider, prices in Australia would start at 55,000 Australian dollars ($38,900 at current exchange rates) and swell to 80,000 ($56,500) for the highest trim.

Mercedes' pickup will share a platform with the Nissan NP300 Navara, but the German company's designers will differentiate them as much as possible. "Yes, to come to an attractive price we are using a common platform, but all the rest is done by Mercedes – to design, to develop the vehicle specifically to meet Mercedes criteria," Daimler board member Thomas Weber said to CarAdvice.

Earlier rumors called the pickup the GLT, but this insider claims that X-Class or Z-Class are the current frontrunners. Mercedes reportedly favors X-Class because it makes the truck sound tougher.

Whatever Mercedes calls the pickup, there's only a glimmer of hope for it to come to the US. The company plans to build them in Spain and Argentina, which means the infamous chicken tax could inflate prices here on the imported model. Instead, the Mercedes truck would compete against the Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger in markets like Europe, Australia, and Latin America.

More Details on Future Mercedes-Benz Pickup Emerge
Optional V-6 Diesel, Bare Bones to Luxury Trims

00af28117efb73b2fb420ff748701eba.webp

Last March, Mercedes-Benz announced it would build a midsize pickup in collaboration with Nissan that would based on the NP300 Navara platform. Unique styling and powertrains were promised. Australia’s CarAdvice claims to have some inside info on some of the details of the upcoming pickup. The pickup will likely be badged the X-Class for the letter’s supposed connotation of ruggedness and off-road capability. Two engines will be offered, both diesels. The base engine will reportedly be a 2.3L I-4 diesel, making 188 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, with the top-spec engine a 3.0L V-6 making 255 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Whether or not the engines will be of Nissan or Mercedes remain unknown. Both companies offer 3.0L V-6 turbodiesels. The I-4 is likely a Nissan design, as the company already offers an engine fitting that displacement and power specification in its YS23DDTT I-4 diesel.

The pickup will reportedly be built in Barcelona, Spain, for export to European, African, Latin American, and Asia-Pacific markets. Export to the U.S. is unknown. Based onrecent spyshots, the next-generation Frontier will likely be fundamentally similar to the global Navara and likely built at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, plant, the same as the current model. The truck could conceivably be built at the Canton plant. Nissan and Daimler already jointly build 2.0L I-4 GDI turbo engines in Decherd, Tennessee, for use in Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti models.

Although the U.S. pickup market is a large and potentially lucrative market, it also is fraught with pitfalls for newcomers, as Honda learned with the first-generation Ridgeline and Nissan with the Titan. However, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says the two companies are working on 10 shared projects currently, with “many more” to come in the near future.

Mercedes-Benz ute development mule spy photos

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz ute has been spotted by our spy photography team in southern Europe, although it only provides one clue about the final vehicle.

First announced at the end of March 2015, Mercedes-Benz has since confirmed that its first dedicated one-tonne ute will be based on the platform of the Nissan Navara NP300.

The same set of underpinnings will also yield a new Renault one-tonne ute, which was previewed last year by the Alaskan concept.

Utes for all three brands will be produced in various Renault-Nissan factories across the globe, including Barcelona, Spain, and Cordoba, Argentina. Renault and Nissan utes will also be made at Nissan’s factory in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

It’s widely speculated that the Mercedes-Benz ute will feature the greatest amount of interior, exterior and mechanical differentiation from the Nissan Navara.

Earlier reports have suggested the three-pointed star’s ute will use Mercedes-Benz engines. And from these photos, it seems as though the German load-lugger will also feature a wider track than the Navara upon which it’s based.

The Mercedes-Benz ute is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms from 2018, and will be sold in most regions around the world, except the USA.

More details emerge from a secret design forum down-under. :)

2019 Mercedes-Benz X-Class/Z-Class ute details emerge
New details from a top-secret Australian design forum have emerged, detailing the upcoming Mercedes-Benz ute that was spied testing this week in a Nissan Navara shell.

The private event is understood to have brought confirmation that the ute will be known as either the Mercedes-Benz X-Class or Z-Class, along with a number of other details:
  • Three model range (base, mid- and high-specification)
  • Two diesel engines (four- and six-cylinder diesel options)
  • Australian engineering input
  • B-Class-esque interior with dashtop screen for high-specification model
  • AMG styling kit likely, but AMG version unlikely
These details follow the sighting this week of a prototype Mercedes-Benz ute, wearing Mercedes-Benz wheels and the panels of a new-generation Nissan Navara NP300.

What we know already

Based on information released by Mercedes-Benz since the new model’s announcement, we know that the ute will occupy a premium space for the brand and will be based on the recently released Nissan Navara NP300, which has been engineered to support both a coil-sprung rear and leaf spring suspension setup.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the similarities will be few and far between, with the manufacturer admitting the decision to use the Navara platform was one based on cost.

At this month’s Detroit motor show, Daimler board member Thomas Weber told CarAdvice, “Yes, to come to an attractive price we are using a common platform, but all the rest is done by Mercedes – to design, to develop the vehicle specifically to meet Mercedes criteria,” Weber said, building on previous statements from the brand.

The ute, which was announced in July 2015, will be sold in key markets for the brand, which include Latin America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

It will be built at Nissan’s plant in Barcelona, Spain, for global export. The Mercedes-Benz ute will also share its platform with the Nissan Navara NP300 and Renault Alaskan.

What we have learned

Based on a top secret design forum held in Australia late last year, we have discovered that the new Mercedes-Benz ute will be called either the Mercedes-Benz X-Class or Mercedes-Benz Z-Class. According to an attendee, the brand was leaning toward X-Class due to its off-road and rugged connotation.

In an attempt to distance itself from the Navara NP300 donor vehicle, organisers said that there would only be a dual-cab variant. The single variant would eliminate the need to engineer a single-cab or extra-cab variant.

The Mercedes-Benz ute range will be available in three specification levels: a trades-focused base model, a better-equipped mid-level option and a more lifestyle-oriented top specification.

The range will also be powered exclusively by diesel engines, one four-cylinder and one six-cylinder engine.

Powering the base and mid-specification models will be the same engine as the Navara — a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 140kW (188hp) of power and 450Nm (332ft.lb) of torque. It will have a towing capacity limited to 3000kg.

The top-specification model will be available with both the four-cylinder diesel and a six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 190kW (255hp) of power and 550Nm (406ft.lb) of torque. Towing capacity would be an increased 3500kg.

Both the base model and mid-specification will come with selectable four-wheel drive, with the vehicle operating in rear-wheel drive regularly. The top-specification will be a full-time four-wheel-drive.

In terms of design, the base model is likely to be built as a tradesman’s utility with basic wheels, plastic-clad bumpers and little in the way of visual enhancements.

According to an attendee, the top-specification model had an interior similar to the B-Class, with an iPad-esque screen attached to the dashboard. The top-specification model also had integrated satellite navigation and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

54e21147f382c315af23724b839042de.webp

In terms of pricing for Australia, attendees were told that pricing would start from around $55,000 for the base model, over $60,000 for the mid-specification and close to $80,000 for the top-specification guise.

Australia to have engineering input

When quizzed about the new Mercedes-Benz ute, David McCarthy, Mercedes-Benz Australia’s senior manager of public relations, product and corporate communications said, “Into the design…none. Into the spec, quite a bit. We will still do some local work on it — we did actually have a styling workshop here, which we wanted [in order] to do some potential customer research. Bear in mind it’s still two years away and is a bit of a moveable feast. We feel quite good about it.”

“It’s a bit early. There will be three specs, basically. There’ll be a ‘tradie’ spec (close to a tradie spec), a mid-range and a high-range. It’s not going to be priced in the market against Rangers and stuff like that — I suspect Amarok or higher. It’s such a new area for us.”

“Certainly feedback from our existing customers is great. They’re really interested in the vehicle. How many are we going to sell? No idea. We are an important component of the vehicle’s worldwide sales, but it’s still a long way away,” he said.

ecc1f64c4d5ed08b343f6195d8bc83c4.webp

“Our driving conditions are not totally unique. They are pretty unique and there will be an expectation that the vehicle be very competent off road. Certainly for us that’s important. There will be local development done — to what level, we’re not sure yet, but there will be local work done.”

No AMG version of Mercedes-Benz ute

The concept of a ‘go-fast’ version of the ute was all but quashed, with McCarthy suggesting that the notion was ruled out.

“Tobias [Moers — chief executive of Mercedes-AMG] was asked about this at Detroit [motor show]. He laughed and said he had just been having a discussion about the very same thing with Volka from AMG and a V8 AMG ute…I don’t think that’s going to happen,” McCarthy said.

e04460134b4d05d65fa88df46b7bf471.webp

“Certainly an AMG styling kit, as such, that’s entirely possible. Anything beyond that, it would mean that our development engineers at AMG are used to developing cars and SUVs. A ute is an entirely different thing.”

“If it happened — you’d end up with something like a Maloo, which can carry three bags of baguettes, then it’s use as a ute is reduced. Then again — how many people that are buying utes are using them as they were properly designed.”

“Like Hyundai’s upcoming thing (Santa Cruz) — I’d be surprised if that has any load-carrying capacity. For us, we definitely want a tools-of-the-trade version, as it’s called. Our vans, they’re built to work, so it’s got a lot of lifestyle attractions to it, but a lot of these vehicles are going to have to earn their living. An AMG version is highly unlikely, especially for the first version.”

Would you pay north of $50,000 for a Mercedes-Benz work ute? If so, what features would you like to see fitted to it?

X-Class, Z-Class, ... If journalists use all letters of alphabet, maybe they could guess the name. And why the name has to follow the typical nomenclature from Mercedes? Remember Citan...

I think the mule from these shots is more the future Renault Alaskan that the new Mercedes's pick-up. Mercedes and Renault use red spanish plates, but I've never seen that Mercedes uses them. I've seen mules as this one with typical german plates from Mercedes, with letters "BB".

New Mercedes-Benz Pickup Takes Shape

623eb83006f69030585f46d9c97474b9._.webp

Australian sources are reporting that the pickup truck partnership between Nissan and Mercedes-Benzis heating up with more details.

According to Australia's CarAdvice website, the midsize workhorse M-B pickup, previously announced to be based on the Nissan Navara NP300 platform, is likely to be called the X-Class or Z-Class. Although the German pickup is not officially slated for the U.S., the next-generation Nissan Frontier could be based on this same Nissan Navara and offer many similar features and design characteristics.

CarAdvice also is reporting that the new global M-B pickup will have a work-truck personality to complement its expected use. Some have speculated that it will offer multiple diesel and a single gasoline engine, but diesel should be the favored option since the pickup is likely to stay in key markets within reach of Nissan's production facility in Spain. Mercedes likely will target Australia, South America and Europe with this pickup.

With changing buying habits and product availability in the U.S. midsize pickup marketplace, we're likely to see more entries during the next five to 10 years. Already companies such as Ford (Ranger), VW (Amorak), Hyundai (Santa Cruz) and Ram (Rampage?) have said that if certain conditions can be met, it might be worth entering this growing pickup market.

On a related note, our spy shooters have sent us these images and are guessing they've captured either the new Mercedes-Benz pickup (rumored to be called the GLT), or the all-new Frontier, slated to debut next year; or it could be both. Here are the notes they sent us:

Our photos show an early mule based on the Nissan Navara NP300, with could be the next Frontier we see, but with added fender flares. This is likely required due to a wider track.

We already know the Mercedes GLT will use the NP300 Navara chassis, but early reports indicate a totally unique exterior design, including a wider stance. That seems to indicate the test car in our photos is likely the Mercedes.

The Mercedes pickup will be mainly for customers in over seas markets. However, with assembly possible in Nissan’s Mexico plant, Mercedes executives have said they would consider selling the GLT in the U.S. market as well.

Expect Mercedes to offer four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic connected to the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive.
