Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

Q6 e-Tron's successor WHEN? This car just launched last year... and it's got at least 4-5 more years to go....

Alongside an utterly useless RS Q6 model launching for who knows what reason

The presentation of the Q6 etron was delayed and it finally appeared on the marketplace over two years behind schedule. Among other things, big problems with Cariad. With R&D times diminishing, manufacturing processses being streamlined and Audi AG appearing very serious about getting itself back on track, I would not at all be surprised were the Q6 etron retired "prematurely". Another 5 years ? Color me highly skeptical.

They took a hit on the Q8 e-Tron being retired 1 year into production (technically 5 years though.. considering it used to be "e-Tron).

I'd rather see them discontinue the Q4 e-Tron prematurely. FWIW the Q6 does have competitive range and performance and.. a somewhat nicer interior, as much as I dislike it.

I'm quite confident that the Q6 etron's successor will be FAR better. At least I certainly hope so...

But as for now, the ix3 takes the honors. And that by quite some margin IMHO.
I don't think there's any margin between them at all.
All of them have some gaudy flaws between them. But all of them also look pretty good . Somehow Audi have made by far the worst interior, when that used to be a strength of theirs.

I honestly think the GLC looks really quite good. I think it's the most classically good looking amongst the three. The iX3 looks bold and unique and thankfully for BMW, its bold and unique in a good way, unlike the iX. The Audi looks like a VWAG product.
Again as is the case with all of them, the non-light-up grille will look way better.

One thing I really like about the new direction - both Mercedes and BMW - is that they both try to bring back and build upon characteristic fronts from their first “peak” eras. I dont like the lit up grills, neither here nor in the iX3, but without lights they both look “evolutionary” compared to their best designs.

I like the new bold grille with thick chrome surround. Suits the brand. The whole front looks good to me and even the star shaped DTRL look kind of nice.
I do however take offense with the rear lights. I think they are really horrible, and the side view window line is pretty weak too.
Interior seems back on MB old levels like W222, which is excellent of course.

So yeah I am warming up to it. And I just hope it'll be a worldwide hit and do well for MB.

Overall, the German car industry seems to be on the right track since this IAA. And all that while the Chinese overproduction is about to implode in on itself. That bubble will soon show itself.

I think they all offer something different, depending on what you want. Which is good.

I like the new GLC EQ, but the rear end I still want to look at the full width pic showing the tail lights. I think they look really good and better than the CLA. I think this reminds me of the Bangle era with the E60 vs W211, bold vs classical elegant.

Tail lights could work if the different signaling features are creative as well, like Audi and BMW. Mercedes was the weakest in this regard for a decade, their turn signal, stop light, etc are pathetic the least. Im 70% sure it will be the same this time too, but the remaining 30% might promise something good.

I blame Tesla for popularizing the fixed glass roof and making it "chic" to people

Once the Germans realized they can cut costs with putting fixed glass roofs it was over. It's so annoying. The new X4, UPCOMING 3er/i3, the iX3, the new A5 and A6... all have fixed glass roof.

None of the benefits of a fixed roof, none of the benefits of a sunroof. It's so useless. And I use my sunroof in my 2013 allroad all the time.

Apparently the fixed glass sunroof has been popularised in EVs to create an impression of space.

The higher floor compromises rear seat comfort significantly and the higher roofline afforded by the fixed glass is to address some of the packaging compromises compared to a conventional ICE.

It'll also probably save 50-60kg in what are already tremendously heavy vehicles.

A non-retractable sunroof not only saves money but also saves weight. Lighter weight means longer range. Conversely, you'll have a vehicle with less range and less efficiency.

I know people love retractable sunroofs, but our age demands a lighter vehicle beyond cost-cutting. A heavy EV is inefficient, and no one likes an inefficient, short-range EV.

You see a car from the outside for the first time, and the GLC EV looks so ordinary and boring next to the iX3. They've ruined that interior with this car. I like the interior, but the exterior, and especially the rear, are so ordinary and basic.

Mercedes has completely lost its way with exterior design.

Yes, it's more than evident in the comparison photos. I don't recall such a difference between direct competitors. BMW (as they've stated) skipped an entire generation, and it's very noticeable that it's a much more thoughtful, well-crafted, and better-focused product for the current environment, something that will definitely be reflected in sales. The fact that these two products are debuting on the same day is even odd and will reinforce this even more.

The Mercedes's bold new grille needs the rest of the car to be consistent with it.

I wouldn’t say the design is ordinary or basic, it’s just plain ugly. If we get rid of the huge grille and the taillights, it’s still an ordinary Mercedes SUV with boring body lines and the same old design details. They’ve been using that same front bumper design for I don’t even know how many years now. The interior is the only thing that looks good about it. Other than that it’s a total mess. It’s mind boggling to me that some people likes the way it looks.

Love the interior. Hate the grille and the real light graphics, which looks too playful, like a big toy.

These fixes are great. While I could live with the current rear lights - I am not a fan. But the front bumper really looks like a lazy afterthought. Based on the new design direction which is represented by the grille and the headlights, I would have expected a more boxy design everywhere, but in reality everything is rounded, bubble like - except for the headlights and grille. Its a very weird combination, and I feel like Mercedes has been struggling recently with delivering a coherent design. We can like or dislike BMW, but the NK models deliver a cohesive idea from front bumper to the rear spoiler - it might be ugly to some, but its clearly thought out.

Will hold my opinion until I see it in other specs and on video. Exterior wise for me the iX3 wins, interiors are both good, but Mercedes feels much more luxurious. Will be a good competition for the coming years.
You worded everything perfectly. I’m also struggling to understand the extensive use of star graphics on everything, as if people can’t tell it’s a Mercedes. With the taillight graphics, the whole rear end has 5 total star logos. Why? Looks so cheap to me. Even if they wanted to add star logos, they could’ve found a better way to design them. Instead, they thought it was a good idea to put them inside a half circle and call it a day. Just no, man.
I’m actually so disappointed in Mercedes because I was finally getting excited about their stuff, especially after seeing the first teasers for the old style grille. Seeing all of this left me so cold.

BMW must have designed NK because it had lost its way.

BMW's NK design has got on your nerves a lot, you can't hide it. You accept every criticism that comes to Mercedes as if it has come to you and go on the attack. Sorry Furkan, BMW has gone to a different level with NK.
