Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

I said this already when first pics came out ..

Actually, German media reported a while ago that some M-B officials regret having more recently neglected the traditional "E-Class sedan" taxicab market. However, with services like Uber, Bolt, Moia and whatever, would a return to that market be so lucrative ? Not to mention more VW ID.4's, Skoda Enyaqs and various MPVs finding themselves in taxi fleets.

I'll admit to having my difficulties in accepting the notion that M-B will replace the current W214 with an automobile presenting the proportions of this alleged E-Class EQ prototype. The W214 is so elegant and ideally proportioned. BEV really need not be synonymous with questionable, short hooded proportions. We see the Polestar 5, new Xpeng P7 sedan, the new electric Volvo ES90, the Audi etron GT and soon the electric AMG 4 door GT as well as the Jaguar 00 based production car as examples.

Or could it be that M-B's announced "convergence of BEV and ICE sedan design" is in fact B.S. and that the ICE version proportions of the W214 successor will be very noticably different from those of the EQ version ?

My apologies to fervent M-B fans. But I cannot help but suspect that M-B design departments remain a bit lost. That would be a shame as the company has so much to offer in terms of innovative tech.
Hmmm. Now that I’m looking at them both, EV version seems to have a shorter bonnet, ending up with a longer greenhouse. That might also be the reason why it looks a little “odd”

What’s causing the sales decline in Mercedes? What are they doing wrong? It cannot be solely because of the “design” because except EQ models they all look great. I’m curious how the CLA and GLC will sell.

Crappy cars and totally behind the curve. Have you seen their line-up? It's f#cking ridiculous. None of their main models are available as an EV. Disaster is an understatement. Literally all their EVs are utter failures so far.

Like half of their sales are diesels, instead of EV.

You are not going to put a long hood on a car with no engine up front. Instead, you make the hood smaller and the actual cabin bigger for the same footprint. Wheelbase looks equally big on both cars, maybe even moreso on the supposed EV.

Yeah where u are regarding diesels. The EV part is true tho. No one here knows exactly why their sales are dropping without a deep dive into the numbers by market. I would suspect it’s a number of things causing it, not just one thing.

It's generally not a good market. Even Porsche's profits are down like 99% or something crazy

Despite poor financial results, M-B shares posted some good gains following the announcement of the figures. Typical sort of "buy on bad news, sell on good news" phenomenon. And yet, there still appears to be at least a glint of optimism regarding the future of the company. We'll see. Market analysts are "bullish" on M-B's new MMA/MB.EA generation of EV vehicles, future ICE Hybrids and the pace of innovative technological progress. Not that it necessary means that much though. Capital markets can be fickle.

The proportions look good from the profile. It's good for hiding the fact that it's a BEV. We'll have to wait for the additional parts to come out for more.

Either really good camo or a really ugly car.

M

Yes, the camo is lavishly applied.

IMHO, it will be a more a matter of "boring" rather than "ugly". And I'll quickly admit to my difficulty "liking" this new, neo-retro faux radiator shield thing. It just can't stop looking like afterthought tinnef to me.

I would say that the front part is the most truthful, they will never make the rear window like this
Personally I dont think Mercedes would bring out such a curved rounded rear on a saloon as it will eat into valuable boot space. A big boot has always been a hallmark of a S-class and an E-class ever since they been on sale and this boot design will definitely be alot smaller than the rectangular shaped boots they been having for years.

The frontal styling could make production but my guess the light design will be something a little more conventional to meet government regulations.

I actually like the rear 3/4 view.

I still can't get my heart and mind around that faux-radiator grill shield though.
Isn’t it the same BMW and Audi are doing? Being unable to find new design cues, they just stick with the old ones.

I can't keep track anymore - something I never thought I'd say about Mercedes-Benz product introductions. GLB, GLA, little g, G Cabrio, S facelift, E EV, AMG Track Sport, GLE, GLS facelifts just to name a few. From a company that back in the day had to delay the R129 SL because they had to get the 190E out the door first.

Yep, things sure have changed since the W/S 123, W126, C126, R107 and first-gen G-Wagen days. The presentation of the W201 "Baby Benz" in fall 1982 ushered some significant expansion of M-B's model offerings.

Do you know when we’ll see the AMG version of the EV CLA? When do the ICE versions come?
