According to a recent report, Mercedes is developing a new sedan that will rival the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.
Details are limited, but AutoCar says the model will be sold alongside the CL and resemble an "über-CLS." Furthermore, the car is slated to feature dramatic styling, a bespoke suspension and AMG engines.
Besides being offered as a Mercedes, there are rumors that the model could spawn a Maybach variant. Nothing is official, but a source indicated the brand is looking at sportier models because of the interested generated by the Xenatec 57S Cruiserio coupe.

A sedan above the S class wow..That would be a Maybach wouldnt it be or is this going to be a Super S class wonder if it will happen..A sedan off teh ocean drive now that would be a car with a special interior....

Sounds good to me. I'm up for any move upmarket. They just need to call it, and all future Maybachs, a Mercedes Maybach, and be done with it. Much like the SLS is exclusively a Mercedes AMG.

Nice..call it SSK:D

Er... The SSK was a super sport model, and the letters mean Super Sport Short (Super Sport Kurz)... It was then modified in the SSKL, Super Sport Short Light (Super Sport Kurz leicht).

Hardly fitting for an über-S/CLS!!!

I welcome the idea but still don't understand why they don't use Maybach for that.

Either kill maybach altogether and market it as a Mercedes in an attempt to move the brand upmarket, or keep Maybach but stop calling the newest upper-hand models Mercedes (Ocean Drive, über-CLS...)!!!

^yeah man i know..its just a cool name..:D

Imo what they should have done from the start was to call the cars Mercedes Maybach.
Like Mercedes AMG.. a subdivsion that makes extremely luxurious Benzes..
The brand name of Maybach itself is to weak and to old for people to remember.
Under the Mercedes name with the added Maybach for excellence it would have been much better.
They could have made some serious money off that...like the AMG packages for all normal MB´s..
Maybach editions.. with some luxury added and a nice phat price tag:)

It should have never been a stand alone brand!

^Bugatti had a stronger name than Maybach historically to..

Plus MB made a crap comeback product while VW made a great one..

Yeap, and buggati should have called themselves VWbuggati :eusa_pray

Mercedes if far more prestigious than VW and can still hold it's own. It has a history at this end and the very well heeled would embrace a Mercedes that represents the epitome of automotive engineering. It's what the brand still stands for. Hell when a 'lowly' S-class debuts it still sets new standards in this respect.

I agree with you to an extent Artist. I don't think they should be spinning off Maybach variant's of C-classes and E-classes, but I do think the Mercedes-Maybach moniker should be used to go head to head with Rolls and Bentley at the very upper end of the scale.

^Yeah they could have limited it from S class and above when it came to Editions..
And then special cars made by the Maybach guys..like the SLS for AMG..

I'll only believe this when I see it.

I don't think Mercedes-Benz will go for the effort and produce an MB model between Maybach and S-Class, for there is simply no space left between the two. Their competitor against the Continental is the AMG S-Class, while the Maybach competes (or should compete) with the bigger Bentleys and Rollers.

The person who wrote the article most likely was in need of a salary, hence such a weird, made-up rumour.

I don't know about great one - vw losing money on every single one. Daimler just doesn't have resourses to produce car which only works well for brand image

^well i was talking for a brand value adding point of view..
the veyron does that well..
And now that Bugatti is back at being the ultimate..i think VW will start making Bugattis that will turn over some cash..
Its a long term plan..and it looks to be working;)

A giant CLS might work, but what about Maybach. I think these so called "reports" are just throw it to the wall and see what sticks type things. Maybach is supposed to be doing the same thing, now Mercedes is too? Need to ignore these such reports until something concrete is revealed.

Well, I think the report is true in the way that Mercedes might be preparing something more expensive than the S-Class, but I think it wil definetly be the rumored Maybach 4 door Coupe, as Georg Kacher hinted.

Hmm...Mercedes already has a car for that...

Now if they wanted to go against the Bentley Mulsanne, that would be a different story.

Great news. If there's something Mercedes master well, it's luxury saloons. The Panamera and Rapide have open the flood gates to more sexy and exclusive luxury saloons. Although the S65 and S63 are all strong sellers they are a bit too corporate to rival their coupe shaped rivals in style and sex appeal.

I think this is simply the 4-door S-Class coupe that Kacher mentioned a while back, which he said would also spawn a corresponding Maybach model.

Marketing-wise, they may be endangering the S-class, but then again, most S-Classes are bought by people who use them as utilitarians, i.e. executives and well-to-dos that want a safe and comfortable commute. Not necessarily flashy types who want the top of the heap.

As far as the argument that Daimler does not have the resources to these types of vehicles, I beg to differ. They spend far more in an F1 program, and that is all about brand building. Such vehicles (when executed correctly) do a lot more for the brand.

No matter how small the niche, MB is massive enough, and with enough of a name to protect, that it needs to be there. Let us not forget that this represents platform sharing galore, as all of these uber-luxury autos are based on the same 222 S-Class, so in essence, they are unlocking extra profit margins by adding bells and whistes.

Positioning this new supposed über-luxury model as both a Mercedes and a Maybach can turn out pretty dangerous for the standard S-Class. The problem for Mercedes is that all their cachet is based on the S, not as-many-as-you-like niche products.

After years of bad investment and investment cuts, I do not think Mercedes-Benz are stupid enough to follow the BMW route of filling every space left on the lineup.
