Merc plans Conti GT rival

Mercedes is considering a high-performance four-door that would slot into the firm’s range above the CLS and give it a rival to Bentley’s Continental GT.

The dedicated hot model has been described to Autocar as an “über-CLS”. It’s likely that it would have an even more dramatic shape than the coupé-like CLS and feature AMG engines and chassis tuning to justify a considerably higher price.

Mercedes believes that it can slot the model into its range — alongside the CL two-door — because of the burgeoning market for ultra-expensive, high-performance models, particularly in Russia and the Middle East.

The firm is determined to take a larger slice of those sales, bullying aside Bentley’s offering and a forthcoming extreme Porsche Panamera GT.

A possible Maybach spin-off of the four-door is also a distinct possibility, say our sources, pointing to the interest shown in the striking one-off 57S Coupé (pictured) that has been displayed at motor shows by German engineering firm Xenatec.

:t-cheers:

If it's above the S, it should be a Maybach model. Or Mercedes could be lazy like BMW was with the 6 Gran Coupe and just add two door on the CL.

I'm not sure if such a stand-alone model will be a hit.

Mercedes doesn't seem to have gumption to come up with a completely new and different design. Even if it looks different to other Mercedes models on the exterior, it will most definitely share most of the interior architecture and components with other Mercedes. In short, it will be the Maybach syndrome all over again and competitors will seize on this and calling it a 'glorified CLS'.

If Mercedes cannot do it properly and make it entirely bespoke, then they should forget it.

I guess they know BMW is comming with their CS, and they don´t want to leave that market to BMW.

Again, this is just the CLS to the S. Expect it to be about $25k dearer than a comparably motored S (and perhaps the 550 option, or indeed any v8, won't be options). I hardly think this will be a class between the S and Maybach, unless you really believe the CLS populates exactly the middle between the E and the S currently.
