Mick’s new daily companion

Congratulations on the "new ride", it looks great! I wonder why not something different, Panny or A8 maybe :))
Thanks, André. Had a rather extensive testdrive in the new A8 (see page 27 of the official The New Audi A8 thread). I was impressed by it’s drive, but there were several aspects I didn’t like. Probably most important those touchscreens: hate those fingerprints and it’s too big a distraction operating it whilst driving. The virtual cockpit/screen direct behind the steeringwheel made a very poor and cheaplooking impression on me.
Porsche Panamera is in my eyes just an overpriced car, where there’s absolutely nothing that justifies it’s pricetag. That combined with poor longterm holdership qualities and an Audi diesel engine, made me decide for the S Klasse (my 4th since 2006). For my needs and wants, it still offers “The Best...” indeed...
The only real competitor was the 7er.
Probably because it's "The Best or Nothing" :). So the only alternative were really good running shoes.
Well, in this class that is kind of true :D

Edit: Porsche currently even hasn’t got a diesel on offer in it’s Panamera, so even if I wanted to, no option.

Putting just a few words on “paper” regarding the facelifted W222.
The best part of the FL is the I6 engine. Compared to the former engine, it’s very much refined and quiet. Driving it home from Sindelfingen, my wife asked me once if the engine was at all running or not. The engine, full of souplesse, combined with the 9G automatic is a sheer highlight of the FL. One could easily mistake it for a gasoline driven engine.
Promisses to be economical as well. Driven not that many km yet, but I’m sure it consumes 0,5 -0,8 litres/100 km less. Mind you, my old one still had the 7G automatic.

Yes indeed, the A8 virtual cockpit hardware/shape was poorly designed because it doesn't fill the drivers view through the steering wheel, you can almost see the side vent and is weird. The instruments view in my D4 is perfect.

So yeah, the S class is still a better pick.

Any more noticeable differences?

Any more noticeable differences?
Many I’d say.
Few very subjective ones:
- it seems the airsuspension is even more comfortable;
- it seems it’s even more quiet inside;
- it seems as if the car as a whole is even better screwed together.

ACC brakes the car automatically, in a soft and natural way, in case of corners and roundabouts. After those it accelerates to the preset speed. It offers more comfort in traffic jams. A gadget on the road to autonomous drive, but functioning flawless: the overtake assistence. You touch the indicator once lightly, the car checks the traffic around it and sets to overtake... without you doing anything.

Some interior details changed:
- steering wheel (obvious);
- cruise control operating stick disappeared in favour of steering wheel operated cc;
- new frameless rearview mirror;
- frameless cockpit screens;
- some operating buttons changed location;
- material used around the “idrive” knob area changed from nice matt plastic to glossy plastic

Again, the absolute highlight is the drivetrain, the new engine in combination with the 9G automatic. Effortless, powerful, economical and offers real pleasure. Good to experience, that the real important features of an automobile are the highlight of a facelifted car and not something like connectivity or whatever sh!t.

Thanks for sharing with us the highlights and improvements with your new S350d it certainly must be a wonderful experience everytime you get behind the wheel. Does your car have the standard air suspension or has it got Magic Body Control? Does you new car have alot more interesting options fitted than your previous car?

Anytime, Rolf :)
Magic Body Control isn’t an option for 6 and 8 cylinder S Klasse in Germany. Reserved for the V12 S models (S600 and S650 Maybach). The technical and entertainment options are the same as the previous car. My current car has less luxury options, like no heated/electrical/memory rearseats and no dinamica roof.

A worthy upgrade. You can hardly ever say this about facelifted cars. The high mileage that you put on your cars plus that sweet I6 coupled with the 9G make it a no brainer.
It's cliche but you can hardly ever go wrong with an S-Class.
Beautiful, Mick!
