Twingo New Renault Twingo

The Renault Twingo is a city car made by the French company Renault from 1992 to 2024 across three generations. The name is a portmanteau of twist, swing, and tango. The Twingo E-Tech is a small battery electric car with styling heavily inspired by the first generation Twingo.

Renault pushes Twingo upscale; will drop 3-door version

Renault has high hopes for its new Twingo minicar, which will switch to a five-door layout in a move that may help the automaker win customers downsizing from larger vehicles. Renault Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares believes the Twingo has "huge potential" to win conquest sales in Europe by targeting more male buyers.

"One of the messages we are conveying with this car is that we are able to address female and male customers with the same product," Tavares told Automotive News Europe. The current Twingo, available only as a three-door, is largely bought by women customers, he said.

The third-generation Twingo will go on sale in the fourth quarter of next year. It will share a rear-wheel-drive platform with the new Smart ForFour as part of an alliance between Smart's parent, Daimler, and Renault-Nissan.

The Twingo will compete with cars such as the Fiat 500 and Opel/Vauxhall Adam by offering a similar level of personalization options. Renault design chief Laurens van den Acker said personalization "is much more successful than we thought it would be." He said: "We all look with admiration at the success of the 500. The best cars have a double personality. They look feminine and masculine at the same time."

The rear-engine, rear-drive layout of the new Twingo will free more space for passengers. "With the engine in the rear you can shift the instrument panel forward and have a relatively large cabin for a short length," van den Acker said.

Upscale move

Switching the Twingo from front-wheel drive to rwd is part of a package of upscale features that Renault will add to the minicar. IHS Automotive analyst Ian Fletcher said the five-door Twingo likely would help Renault to win customers switching to smaller models. "As some customers look to downsize, having five doors will probably help the decision-making process," he said.

The Twingo was the fourth best-selling minicar in Europe the first five months after the Fiat Panda at No. 1, the 500 held second place and the VW Up was No. 3, according to market researchers JATO Dynamics. The Twingo's five-month sales were 35,933 units, down from 45,294 the year before.

Looks weirdly cute. A mix between the FIAT 500, what appears to be an inspiration drawn from the original R5, a little bit of i3 in the side profile, and many cues from a Twingo Concept that Renault showed sometime last year.

So, this is the brother of the upcoming Smart?

PS. Another leak from Autofilou.at?

So it's a modern day Beetle. VW are probably curiously thinking about whether it makes sense for the Lupo to house the engine in the rear. Boy racers on the other hand, are rubbing their hands at the thought of tuning this engine to make a cheap burnout monster.

The electric Twingo is expected in late 2015, and maybe with the new batteries? :)

Through the next-generation electric vehicle joint development, Renault Group will install the high energy-density battery supplied by LG Chem to its next-generation electric vehicles. Renault Group and LG Chem have already been building a close cooperative relationship in electric vehicle battery fields. LG Chem’s batteries are used in Renault Group’s ‘Zoe,’ an electric vehicle launched in Europe, and ‘SM3 Z.E.’ to be produced in Korea. This cooperation agreement was aimed at an electric vehicle battery development with which to secure the minimum driving distance of 300km for electric vehicles.

Find Out What Regular People from the UK Think about the New Renault Twingo

With its unusual rear-wheel drive setup for the A-segment and the engine placed at the rear as well, the all-new Renault Twingo should be quite interesting to drive. However, since Renault hasn’t let anyone drive it yet, we have to settle for static reviews of the city car, such as this one fromCarbuyer.
Rebecca Jackson talks us through the important things about the new Twingo, such as its cute retro styling, the personalization options, the cabin and the equipment list. But what’s more interesting about the video is that it includes regular people’s opinions about the Twingo, as the car was showcased outside the entrance of a shopping mall in the UK.

Most people had positive reactions about the way the Renault Twingo looks (especially the ladies) and they weren’t scared when they found out the engine was in the back. Scroll down to see how the Twingo was rated by the shopping mall crowd.

How did I miss this!?
RR city car! Sweet!
Hopefully there will be an RS Cup!
When does it hit UK showrooms and do we have any info on the engines?
Would be an amazing track toy/daily!

This is a fantastic looking car, the best IMO of all the small cars on the market. It looks so cute and funky, the back and front overhangs are tiny and I really like the rear side angle looks like a throw back to the 5 of the 70's, also the front looks like a little panda's face. I really like what they have done with the interior, it is simple, but modern and functional and colourful and arty like!!! The white dimpled panels look like the surface of a Golf ball!!!
