Twingo New Renault Twingo

The Renault Twingo is a city car made by the French company Renault from 1992 to 2024 across three generations. The name is a portmanteau of twist, swing, and tango. The Twingo E-Tech is a small battery electric car with styling heavily inspired by the first generation Twingo.
I hope that the new Smart will be as cool and funky as this car, then I think MB will have a winner!!

I love it! I love it! I love it!

The only thing I would request would be a proper closing glovebox, so that I can store a few things away from the eyes of strangers.

Did I mention that I love it?

Through the next-generation electric vehicle joint development, Renault Group will install the high energy-density battery supplied by LG Chem to its next-generation electric vehicles. Renault Group and LG Chem have already been building a close cooperative relationship in electric vehicle battery fields. LG Chem’s batteries are used in Renault Group’s ‘Zoe,’ an electric vehicle launched in Europe, and ‘SM3 Z.E.’ to be produced in Korea. This cooperation agreement was aimed at an electric vehicle battery development with which to secure the minimum driving distance of 300km for electric vehicles.

LG Chem targets EV batteries with range of more than 200 miles in 2016

SEOUL (Reuters) -- South Korean supplier LG Chem plans to supply batteries for electric vehicles that can travel more than 200 miles, or 321 kilometers, per charge in 2016, its CFO said on Friday.

The CFO, Cho Suk-jeh, did not elaborate on which automakers will use the so-called second-generation batteries.

LG Chem currently supplies batteries for General Motors, Renault SA and other automakers.

GM's former CEO, Dan Akerson, said last year the U.S. automaker, which currently sells the Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR hybrids, was working on new electric vehicles, including one with a 200-mile driving range.

An update from Bosch which may be related? :)

Electric cars to get automatic transmissions with multiple gears, says Bosch

German automotive technology powerhouse Bosch believes drivers of electric cars will soon be able to change gears just as they do in regular vehicles.

The world’s largest supplier of automotive components expects automatic transmissions will make their way into EVs in the near future as manufacturers seek to provide greater efficiency and driver engagement.

“High-precision automatic transmissions are essential in hybrid vehicles to ensure that the combustion engine and electric motor are synchronised with each another, but such transmissions could also find their way into pure electric vehicles,” Bosch said in a statement.

EVs are powered by electric motors that run at up to 20,000rpm and produce peak torque from idle allowing them to operate effectively with only one gear. Internal combustion petrol and diesel engines, alternately, typically have a maximum speed below 9000rpm and rely on numerous ratios to keep power and torque outputs high.

Bosch says it is a misconception that electric motors and multi-gear transmissions are mutually exclusive technologies, however, insisting that selecting the optimum transmission ratio will always make an engine or motor more efficient.

Bosch estimates global sales in 2020 of 2.5 million electric vehicles, along with three million plug-in hybrids, 6.5 million hybrids and 100 million petrol and diesel vehicles.

Last year there were 100,000 EVs, 90,000 plug-ins, 1.5 million hybrids and more than 60 million petrol and diesel vehicles sold around the world. More than half of those were equipped with automatic transmissions, and Bosch expects auto gearboxes will increasingly overtake manuals globally in the coming years.

More potent Renault Twingo spied once again

Likely to wear the GT badge
Our spies have sent us a second batch of pics with a more powerful Renault Twingo currently in development.

In a previous set of spy pics we referred to the hotter Twingo as wearing the "RS" moniker but upon further investigation we found out the company's design senior vice president Laurens van den Acker said a few months ago it's unlikely to happen. The main reason as to why it won't see the light of production day is because there isn't enough space inside the engine bay to squeeze a larger motor which would have to develop at least 150 bhp (112 kW) in order to be worthy of the RS designation, according to Renault Sport Tehnologies CEO Patrice Ratti.

That being said, the prototype seen here is probably of a Twingo GT which will retain the regular model's rear drum brakes but will come with an extra air intake below the front grille along with twin exhaust pipes at the back. Power will probably come from the same 0.9-liter TCe three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine which will likely be uprated to around 110-120 bhp.

It should be out sometime next year around the same time when Smart will introduce a Brabus-prepared ForTwo.

2015 Renault Twingo UK Pricing, Specifications Announced

Before we beat around the bush with the big list of features available on the 2015 Renault Twingo city car, we'll tell you that the least expensive third-gen Twingo you can get is the Expression SCe 70 (£9,495 OTR), while the range-topping Dynamique Energy TCe 90 S&S will set you back a reasonable £11,695 OTR.

Only two engines are available: a 1-liter three-cylinder mill that churns out 70 ponies without the help of turbos or a supercharger, as well as a 0.9-liter 90 horsepower turbo three-pot. The manufacturer informs that only the Dynamique trim level gets Renault's Stop & Start system for improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

The rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Twingo is the first model from the French manufacturer that gets the R & GO smartphone connectivity system across the lineup. Thanks to the radio, a universal cradle and a clever, free-to-download app, owners have intuitive access to a variety of navigation, telephone, multimedia and trip computer functions as well as internet radio and a host of other practical features. Dynamique models offer the option of the R-Link multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen, voice control, TomTom sat nav and 3D sound by Arkamys. Useful features such as a DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity for your mobile phone and USB sockets are standard on every trim level.

Each and every third-generation version of the Renault Twingo (the entry-level Expression, the mid-range Play and the upmarket Dynamique) comes as standard with front and rear bumpers finished in the same color as the bodywork, a rear spoiler and LED daytime running lights. Other bits and bobs Renault throws as standard features include electric power steering, electric front windows, remote central locking, a speed limiter, steering wheel adjustment, a trip computer and gear change indicator, a lane-change function for the indicators and the automatic activation of the rear screen wiper when reverse gear is selected. The latter is a feature that might infuriate some drivers, and it's not that new when you consider that the Citroen Xsara Picasso did that more than 10 years ago.

A unique-in-segment folding front passenger seat and a split-folding two-seat rear bench as well as numerous cabin storage areas and three cupholders are also offered as standard. On the safety front, equipment includes Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Emergency Brake Assist and four airbags. A tire pressure monitoring system also comes free of charge. Step up to the Play trim level and that adds air conditioning, height adjustments for the driver's seat and steering wheel and 15-inch black two-tone wheel covers. The Dynamique comes with goodies such as 15-inch alloys, pinstripe shoulder line decals, fog lamps, electric heated door mirrors, cruise control, a lane departure warning system, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshift knob, white instrument backlighting and a neat folding ignition key. Customers that go for the nippy TCe 90 engine on the Dynamique trim level also get Variable Gear Ratio power-assisted steering, making the vehicle more agile and reactive at city speeds.

A lot of personalization options are on offer, but were most interested in the packaging of this little urban cruiser. With 3.59 meters in length, the all-new Renault Twingo is 10 centimeters shorter than the outgoing model, but it boasts with a 12 cm longer wheelbase (2.49 meters) and a whopping 22 cm more cabin roomfor both the front and rear passengers. The 8.59 m turning circle renders the third-gen Twingo as the best-in-class. Aside from the 52 liters worth of cubby holes in the cabin, the engine is tilted by 49 degrees to allow the boot to swallow up to 219 liters of baggage. If you need more, then just fold the 50:50 rear seats flat into the floor. As for fuel economy, that culminates with the 67.3 U.K. mpg and just 95 CO2 grams per km achieved by the Twingo Dynamique SCe 70 with Start & Stop. All versions exceed 60 U.K. mpg in mixed use and 50 U.K. mpg city. For the full price list, main options and packages, check out the PDF document attached beneath the following video.

Reviews (and very positive) are out:

Topgear:
It's a genuinely different approach to design and engineering that has brought real dividends, not just in being different for its own sake. Most important, it's much more fun than a base-model supermini for the same cash

Autocar:
We'll have to wait for the warm and hot versions of the Twingo to see its potential as a pocket sports car, but for now the Twingo TCe 90 is an intriguing and innovative model whose unique engineering package has allowed it to shake off most of the downsides of conventional city cars

Autoexpress:
The new Renault Twingo is good-looking and impressively packaged little car. Its rear-engined chassis means its compact outside yet spacious and practical inside. On the whole it's good to drive – comfortable and manoeuvrable – but it’s lacking the fun factor of the very best this class has to offer.

It seems really good, can only hope for a Renaultsport version.

What is it like?
Hardly anything like a rear-drive car. The new Twingo, by Renault’s own admission, has been tuned to be as similar to a typical front-drive city car as possible.

Now WHY would they have done that?!

I'm concerned. I have high hopes for this one and I really hope that it's enjoyable in one way or another. I can't wait to drive one myself, but reading all those tests, doesn't leave me with much hope...

It got just 4 stars because the shell's strenght or in the new stupid NCAP fashion, because lacking electronic gizmos or the safety belt reminder isn't available in all languages?

Thanks for the video, Rainer. Blown away by the knee space of the rear seat... I think it has more than my damm Megane  :D

In an article about the GT/Brabus models, Automobilwoche also hints one may speculate about joint electric versions. :)

But this doesn't imply additional variants according to both partners. Only smart will offer the two seater.

Thanks Rainer for the nice video. This is a fantastic little car, I love the looks, cute and funky and great interior design and packaging it is a winner

Thanks for the video, Rainer. Blown away by the knee space of the rear seat... I think it has more than my damm Megane  :D

I went to the Renault dealership today to take a look... I adjusted the driver's seat to suit me (I'm 190 cm tall) and then checked the rear legroom... and there wasn't any to speak of. Interestingly enough, the same goes for the Clio wagon... I know they're small cars, but I've done the same in for instance the Skoda Citigo and in that, it would have been perfectly possible for someone to sit behind me.

I didn't drive the Clio, so I can't comment on that area. I think it looks good and the build quality seems to be OK, but the rear legroom was a disappointment. I don't think it would be possible for an adult to sit behind me.

New Renault Twingo - Can it Drift?

While the Renault Twingo would appear to have all of the necessary ingredients for lots of tail-happy fun, it’s not really that kind of car.
Renault(and co-development partners Daimler) seem to have wanted to create a rear-engined, rear-driven car that behaves as if it was front-wheel drive.

The semi-humorous video posted below highlights this by trying to put the little Twingo to the test. It does go sideways, but it doesn’t appear to be in its element. That could also be down to the fact that while you can disengage stability, traction control always stays on (and kills wheelspin).

Even so, we hope the peppier future versions of the Twingo will be more like the Twin’run concept; it looked very eager and able to go sideways.
