Not only is that image stunning looking but the decision (if true) that Volvo will be repricing their models downwards and away for that of Audi, BMW and Mercedes yet retaining their build quality and materials will make this and the rest of the range very appealing to a range of potential customers that up to now Volvo was never on their radar.

My guess if Volvo keep with the current design language your render is probably pretty close to what Volvo will produce, however I think with the next S80/V70 Volvo will introduce a new look.

Next gen Volvo S80 coming in 2-3 years

The next gen Volvo S80 flagship sedan will be out in the next 2-3 years, reports Autocar.co.uk. A senior Volvo official told the publication that the next gen luxury sedan will be the second model to adopt the brand’s new interior design theme that will be seen on the 2015 Volvo XC90.

The exterior design of the next gen S80 would be inspired by the Concept Coupe andConcept Estate. The new XC90′s interior design would also be carried forward to other premium offerings apart from the S80, in the future.

Volvo have unveiled the interiors of the 2015 XC90 that will have its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October. The new design philosophy eliminates the current version’s cluster of buttons on the centre console and replaces it with a large touchscreen display that takes care of most of the multimedia infotainment functions. The craftsmanship and the quality of materials used have also been improved.

The new S80 is the next model in line to get the brand’s new interior theme that will debut in the 2015 XC90.

Underpinning the next gen Volvo S80 would be the new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) that will also make its debut in the new XC90. The new architecture is expected to make the new model lighter and stiffer than the current gen S80.

The upcoming luxury sedan would ditch its five-, six- and eight-cylinder motors in favor of the new VEA (Volvo Engine Architecture) family of downsized turbocharged four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines.

We understand that Volvo will bring the next gen S80 to India a few months after the global premiere.

I think that just like Jaguar the turn around is going to be slowwwwww... Hopefully the momentum of the XC90 will be enough to sustain interest in the brand and cause some kind of renaissance for the brand here in the US.

I just don't see the US market being interested in a large 4 cylinder SUV, especially one which will be fairly pricey. If the US market was ready for this don't you think MB and BMW would have brought over the 4 cylinder ML and X5 models already? Volvo have shot themselves in the foot with this strategy.

Volvo S90 Coming Soon After XC90 Launch

With the introduction of the 2015 Volvo XC90 coming up next week and an on-sale date set for early next year, it’s understandable that Volvo is preoccupied with the launch of its SUV. Shortly after the launch of the XC90 and riding on the same Scalable Platform Architecture, Volvo is reportedly already preparing for the introduction of its all-new flagship sedan, the Volvo S90.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said that the S90 would arrive after the Spring 2015 launch of the XC90 and after Chinese Volvo exports began, but he didn’t go as far as to give a specific time frame. Based on the aggressive nature of Volvo’s upcoming renaissance, we imaging the S90 could debut later next year or early 2016.

Although not much is currently known about this new model, the S90 will eventually replace the S80 as the top sedan in Volvo’s lineup. Most likely, thestyling for the S90 could be inspired by the 2011 Volvo Universe Concept (shown above), although we’d hope it would be a more enthusiastic design than that car displayed.

What will be more interesting is the station wagon version of this car. In its most recent form, the wagon version of the S80 was called the V70/XC70, but a recent report from back in March said that the V90 name could be used for this cargo-friendly model. Based on the current direction of Volvo wagons, it looks like the days of jacked-up station wagon/crossover might be over.

In addition to these large vehicles, the SPA chassis will also underpin replacements for the slightly smaller S60, V60 and XC60 cars. Eventually, Volvo will introduce a smaller modular platform called CMA, in conjunction with parent company Geely that would be used on future smaller vehicles including a replacement for the dearly departed C30 and an all-new compact crossover, which we have to assume would be called the XC30.

Confirmation referred to new names rumors:

Volvo planning nomenclature changes, next S80 to become S90

XC70 will be V90 Cross Country
Volvo's vice president in charge of large cars has announced a series of naming changes for upcoming models.

The second generation XC90 is only a taste of what's to come in Volvo's overhauled lineup as all models will get replacements within the next three years. Dennis Nobelius, a Volvo vice-president of the "Vehicle Line 90" model program has announced several moniker changes for upcoming models, with the most important one being the next-gen S80 set to use the S90 designation.

In addition, the all-new V70 will be renamed V90 while the next XC70 is going to be commercialized under the V90 Cross Country nameplate. Dennis has also disclosed plans of a long wheelbase S90 which will be sold exclusively in China with the S90 L denomination.

All these models will be powered by Volvo's brand new four-cylinder Drive-E engines and will ride on the Scalable Product Architecture which has nothing in common with Ford. Volvo says the S90, S90 L, V90 and V90 Cross Country will be introduced within the next two years.

It would add another platform to their range which right now I don't think they could afford. AWD is just as good as RWD, IMO and that of many others FWD works better in winter conditions. I read somewhere once that most Volvos are sold in snowbelt states in the US and the sure are popular in Scandinavian and Russia regions which also happens to see a lot of snow.

2016 Volvo S90 comes into focus
Will be heavily included by the XC90
New details are starting to emerge about the Volvo S90.

Set to battle the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, the car will reportedly have the same basic proportions as the S80 but adopt a modern design which is heavily influenced by the XC90. This means we can expect soft curves and a distinctive front fascia that incorporates a stylish grille and headlights with T-shaped LED daytime running lights.

The cabin will also be heavily influenced by the XC90 so expect it to be equipped with premium leather upholstery, wood trim and metallic accents. There should also be a digital instrument cluster and a massive infotainment system.

Specifications remain a mystery but the model will ride on the SPA platform and feature a variety of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines which will likely carryover from the XC90.

The S90 will reportedly be launched in 2016 and cost "just over" £30,000 ($48,959 / €37,788) in the United Kingdom.
