VW in my opinion is loosing the design edge it once had with cars like Passat and Golf. The new models with straight lines are very very unimpressive. How can the designers not see it.

perhaps because their brief is to design a business car, not a blob. Winterkorn's presentation of the car last night was as a 'business suit', presumably Hugo Boss-like, if not Milan-like.

And Winterkorn is right, this car will frighten the 3-Series and C-Class. Most business users don't give a fig about which end the car is driven from.

People are amazed that VW group would allow VW brand to encroach so blatantly on Audi 'premium' territory. Why not? Competition is the healthiest thing. Audi bosses know that the new A4 will have to be so good, not just to beat the super new C-Class, but just to keep ahead of the new Passat.

You will find more BMW in these picture than in a BMW dealership...
Add the kidney grill and you all will start drooling. We have to thank Bangle for the front and especially the fenders.
So much E65 in these front fenders while the rest reminds of BMWs of yore... especially the strong contrasting shoulder line and hoffmeister kink.

The cars design is more sculptured with extra definition of shapes and lines which I like. The bulging wheel arches give it a more sportier stance with the big tyres and the thin C-pillars go well with the longish boot. New front grill and lights looks classy the car has a more up market look for sure and puts a lot of distance between it and other main stream family saloons like Camry, Sonata/I40, Kia, Insignia and Mondeo in the way it presents itself. Still has conservatism in it and not a true rival for the 3 series and C-class as it is not compact and sporty like them, they have longer wheelbases and shorter length and overhangs. Also the interior is not sporty and luxurias like them either, the 3 series interior has more cocooned low driving position feel while the new C-Class interior is in another league for luxury look and feel. The Passat could be considered an alternative and it's strengths are its space and seat comfort and value for money compared to the BMW and Mercedes. I like the new high tech active instrument display, that is one thing it has over its German compact rivals and the updated multimedia package BUT the interior basic design is not a huge change from previous one iMO. I own a VW CC and I can see many switches and center console design and seats that are carried over from my car including the analog clock. Let's hope the new car is better to drive with sharper handling and better ride over pot holes or small road ripples and bumps.

The front looks like a chinese attempt at making a Passat....

I know the non premium, european D segment car is shrinking and thus, not as important to manufacturers as once was, but how could VAG been so uninspired about this car. I repeat what I say on the Camry thread: Honda Accord (the american one), Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion, in that order, over this.

I completely agree with you. All these new VW don't tease my eyes...

Very good looking car. I assume stretched MQB? It's a good new direction for VW's frontal DRG design - certain to appear similarly on the next generation Tiguan and Touareg. I'm not so sure about the dashboard styling - particularly the extension of the vent graphic across the dash.

I like the styling, it is a improvement on the current version for sure. The flared front wheel arches with large tires/alloys reminds me of the E65 7-series especially when viewed from the 3/4 rear shot and the thin C-pillars and rear door window arch has 5-series look for sure. Rear lights have previous Audi A6 look to them. The front grill and lights look quite menacing, but it is still on the conservative side as usual with all VW models (except for Scirocco and Beetle).

The backward tilting headlights and the meeting point with the very plain grille isn't working. Ford Taurus, in comparison, looks quite attractive. The rear of the VW has been seen numerous times on other VAG products. The B7 version was at least better resolved up front. Maybe it will look OK in real life. But the best and still the attention grabber imo is the B5. Where is that creativity with simplicity.

The impressive Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam served as the ideal setting for the world premiere of a world-wide best-seller: the new Passat. The most successful European business car makes its debut with new engines, less weight and not least with the latest assistance, Infotainment and convenience systems. The car melts away class boundaries.

"This Passat heralds in a new era: when it comes to design and proportions, engines and drive systems, Infotainment and assistance systems or when it is a matter of safety, convenience and driving pleasure," explained Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen on the evening before 500 guests. The Group chief continued: "The new Passat gives the right answers to the major automotive trends of its time. For me this Passat is a premium class car without premium costs. This fits perfectly to Europe's most successful business car – lining up with 20 percent better fuel economy, up to 85 kilograms less weight and a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines – there is even a plug-in hybrid available."

All versions of the Passat belong to the most successful mid-size cars in the world and at 1.1 million units a year (2013) it is the Volkswagen Group's model series with the highest volume sold world-wide. To continue this success in the eighth generation, the new Passat is again offered in saloon and estate versions with a multitude of innovations. Thanks to cutting-edge design methods its proportions were made significantly more dynamic (including lower body, longer wheelbase and larger wheels). At the same time, the latest technologies have been applied. They include systems such as Active Info display (a fully digital instrument cluster), extendible head-up display as well as systems such as an app-based Rear Seat Entertainment for tablet computers, Front Assist plus City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring and three more world firsts: Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist.

The new Passat will be available with 10 direct injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines covering a power range from 88 kW / 120 PS to 206 kW / 280 PS. The engines all meet Euro 6 emission standards and both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions were lowered by up to 20 percent. All versions are equipped with a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode. For the first time, the Passat will also be offered with a plug-in hybrid drive (115 kW TSI petrol engine plus 80 kW electric motor and externally chargeable battery). With a system power output of 155 kW / 211 PS it will be Volkswagen's most powerful plug-in hybrid and a genuine zero emission vehicle as it has an all-electric range of 50 km.

Advance sales for the new Passat begin on Thursday, 10 July. Prices start from €25,875 (saloon) and (correction vs. previous news release: ) €26,950 (estate).

*Passat (110 kW, 176 kW) – The vehicle has not yet gone on sale. It does not yet have type approval and therefore Directive 1999/94/EC does not apply. Provisional values: Fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.4 - 4.1 (combined); CO2 emissions in g/km: 140 - 108 (combined).

i think an i40, insignia and mondeo does a much better job styling wise and the camry wins by a hair because it has a slightly more aggresive front
