FIAT / Abarth [Official] 2017 Fiat 124 Spider

Fiat Automobiles S.p.A.; originally FIAT, (Italian: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino; lit. 'Italian Automobiles Factory of Turin') is an Italian automobile manufacturer, founded in 1899 and formerly part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It is a subsidiary of Stellantis since 2021 through its Italian division. Also owned by Stellantis, Abarth & C. S.p.A. is an Italian racing and road-car maker and performance division founded by Italo-Austrian Carlo Abarth in 1949.
I just cant get over how ugly those front lights are, it really spoils what would be a good looking car. I am truly disappointed and sad that Fiat has lost its way with sports car styling, no where near as good looking as its older models, the X/19 is one of those stunning older models.

Everyone whose mind and body reacts positively to this kind of therapy... :D

Looks great and judging by MX5 reaction should drive great too.
Would definitely consider this after M135i although I'm disappointed with the engine and power.

Abarth Tickles Our Fancy With 300Hp 124 Spider Rally

Abarth brought its A-game at the Geneva Motor Show, presenting a prototype rally variant of the newly unveiled124 spider model, just as it confirmed its return to motorsports.
original 124 Abarth, 40 years after its last official race.

Dedicated to all those who share the brand’s sense of challenge and racing world values, the automobile was fitted with an 1800 cm3 "bialbero" turbocharged direct injection engine, which (thanks to the different selectable mappings) provides a power output of 300 hp at 6500rpm and an optimum torque curve.

Although Abarth shies away from offering additional information, it does mention that the automobile’s performance is “breath-taking”; even the 6-speed sequential transmission was designed to enhance performance, while the traction is assured by the limited slip differential.

The project was apparently developed to ensure reliability and performance, even in the extreme conditions of typical rallies, with Abarth engineers working intensively to transform the already lightweight car intro an adrenaline-inducing racing machine.

Resistant materials were used in the construction, while the soft top made way for a more rigid, sturdier fixed composite hard top. All these modifications made the vehicle’s weight distribution to be a little rear biased, thus ensuring maximum traction in low grip conditions. Compared to the road going variant, the 124 rally benefits from a lowered center of gravity as well.

Built to meet FIA R-GT category, the car has required structural reinforcements to guarantee even greater stress resistance and the highest safety standards for the crew, and the body now has a safety roll cage.

OK so give me the performance of the second one in the body of the first one and I'll bite!

What makes the Fiat 124 Spider more than a badge-engineered Mazda MX-5?

Fiat never hid the fact that the new 124 was made in collaboration with Mazda, but just how much of the small Italian roadster is actually Japanese?
Top Gear about the vehicle’s character and what makes it unique and different form the MX-5.

The main difference lies in the engine bay, where Fiat’s own 1.4-itre turbocharged four-cylinder has replaced the Nippon-grade 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated mills. An expensive decision, as the engines are assembled in Italy and then shipped all the way to Japan to be fitted to the car.

“We wanted the extra torque and driveability of a turbo”, said Domenico Bagnasco, the 124’s validation manager. The extra torque of the 124 requires slightly longer gears, forcing Fiat to modify Mazda’s original mechanism. The suspension was revised as well, according to product manager Piergiorgio Di Miscio.

“We have retuned the dampers, got new springs and a slightly stiffer anti roll bar. We wanted a car with a more classic Fiat feel – an Italian flair – but not be so uncomfortable that you can’t pick up a beautiful blonde and take her to the beach.”

Fiat has gone for a different steering feel, too, but it wasn't that difficult to implement. “That’s the great thing about electric power steering”, Bagnasco explained. “With a different fuse and some new algorithms, we have achieved a more progressive weighting of the steering. I did not like the rate the steering weight increases in the Mazda. Too light. It’s not Italian.”

Bottom line: different styling, new engine, re-calibrated steering... Pity the cabin is all but identical to the MX-5, with imperceptible changes like door handles with a chrome finish, soft-touch leather door tops and a thicker steering wheel giving the game away.

The countdown to the New York Auto Show continues as Fiat has taken the wraps off the 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth.

Essentially a renamed version of the Abarth 124 Spider, the model features unique bumpers, black side skirts, and Gun Metal accents. The car has also been equipped with a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system and 17-inch aluminum wheels with a Gun Metal finish.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find leather / microfiber seats, red contrast stitching, and a unique instrument cluster. The model also has a leather-wrapped steering wheel, "aluminum-accented" pedals, and a unique shifter.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine that develops 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It can be connected to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Speaking of performance, the 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth has a limited slip differential and a sport suspension that includes Bilstein shock absorbers. The car also has an exclusive Sport Mode which changes the "calibrations of the engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering, and dynamic stability control system to ensure a sporty, responsive and performance-oriented driving experience." Lastly, enthusiasts will be able to order an optional Brembo braking system which adds four piston monoblock aluminum calipers.

And the real bottom line: yes, it's indeed a badge engineered Mazda.

I do like it though, and even like the funky front.

Fiat 124 Targa rendering is inspired by the MX-5 RF
ae2ea9f167fd9a75e4e5d895a3c9af34.webp

We don't know why nobody thought of doing this rendering until now. Mazda blew the roof off the New York Auto Show when it revealed the hardtop version of the MX-5. As you are all aware, it's not a regular convertible with a hardtop, like the BMW 4 Series. Instead, they used a flashback design that's made everybody fall in love with the car.

The Fiat-Chrysler Alliance and Mazda signed a deal a few years ago, giving the Italians access to the ND platform. They've already used it to make the 124 Spyder and the Abarth version. However, we won't be happy until they sell a version of the RF too.

Fiat has done one interesting thing with the Miata chassis; they added a turbocharged engine, something Mazda have never done. That also implies a bit of extra weight. The new retractable roof is also heavier than the cloth ones though Mazda won't say by much. So at the end of the day, the "Fiat 124 Targa" will be noticeably heavier than a regular MX-5.

All the work those Japanese engineers put into making a super-lightweight Skyactiv chassis will go to waste. Is is worth it? For a rear-wheel-drive Fiat with a Targa roof, it most certainly is.

There have been a few Fiat models with Targa tops, such as the sexy X1/9 by Bertone or the 128 Moretti Targa.

Right, about the rendering. Its's made by X-Tomi Design from Hungary. His job was to take the profile of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF and add the features of the Fiat sister car. These include larger rounded headlights, a slightly longer rear, and side sills. We don't particularly like the car in white, but as long as Fiat decides to make one, we'll be happy. Oh, and the video at the bottom should give you an idea of what all the fuss is about.

New Fiat 124 Spider Starts From $24,995, Abarth From $28,195

5c2b9030b9bc4983b034ca1da2f66a4f.webp

We don’t know if you should be surprised or not, but Fiat’s new 124 Spider has roughly the same starting price as the car it’s based on, the Mazda MX-5 in the USA, at $24,995, excluding a $995 destination for the manual model.
In comparison, Mazda’s base 2016 MX-5 Sport with a 155hp 2.0-liter engine and 6sp manual starts at $24,915 plus an $820 destination fee, while the range-topping Grand Touring model with the same engine and gearbox is priced from $30,065.

Fiat’s Italian interpretation of the Japanese roadster comes with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Multiair engine that produces 160hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque on the Classica and Lusso models, and 165hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque on the Abarth, with all models offering a standard 6sp manual and an $1,350 optional 6sp automatic transmission.

With the entry level $24,995 (plus $995 destination) Spider Classicayou get 16-inch alloy wheels, Nero (black) cloth seats, Halogen front lights and LED tail lamps along with all the usual comfort and safety amenities.

The $27,495, plus $995 destination, Spider Lusso gives you 17-inch wheels, leather seats in Nero (black) or Saddle, a leatherette-wrapped cluster brow and lower instrument panel, plus Piano Black accents throughout.

For a little bit more, at $28,195, plus $995 destination, you can jump in the sportier tuned Spider Abarth, which besides an extra 5hp, adds front and rear Bilstein sport suspension, mechanical limited-slip differential, front strut tower bar, Sport Mode selector and sport-tuned chrome quad-tip exhaust, plus unique front and rear fascia, 17-inch wheels and Gun Metal exterior accents. The Abarth edition also offers the option of a Brembo braking system and Recaro seats.

Finally, for a limited time only, Fiat will offer 124 examples of the $35,000, plus $995 destination, Spider Prima Edizione Lusso, each individually numbered with a commemorative badge and available in the exclusive to this edition, Azzurro Italia (Blue) exterior paint with premium leather seats in Saddle. You also get a matching blue leather bag, journal with pen and a poster showcasing original design illustration with vehicle dimensions, but still, that $7,000 price jump over the Lusso and Abarth is a hard pill to swallow…
