SL-Class [Official] Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

This car looks revolting in white with the black bonnet littered with Maybach emblems.

I have to say, I think this SL is utterly disappointing in the looks department full stop... but this Maybach version, I think it works. It's #Fashion - I'm not the kinda guy that's into Fashion, but there are people who are, and I think for them, this is well executed. Like, I'm not into Art Deco, but Rolls-Royce leaned in to it to differentiate themselves from old-money British luxury, and it worked for them... I think this is the same.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is the first two-seater roadster in Maybach history and stands as the brand's sportiest model to date. As with all Maybach vehicles, it offers a comprehensive suite of standard features including two specially curated design concepts – "Red Ambience" and "White Ambience" - each featuring distinctive two-tone paintwork and exclusive interior themes.
"White Ambience" showcases a new interpretation of Maybach' signature two-tone paint with Obsidian Black Metallic over MANUFAKTUR Moonlight White Magno. In "Red Ambience," Obsidian Black Metallic contrasts elegantly with MANUFAKTUR Garnet Red Metallic. In addition to the two design themes, MANUFAKTUR Exclusive paint options are also available upon request, allowing for a highly personalized expression of the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series2.
Exterior design highlights include an illuminated Maybach grille featuring an upright Mercedes-Benz star, an optional PixelPaint Mercedes-Maybach hood pattern, rose‑gold accents and chrome elements, plus exclusive 21‑inch forged wheels and a soft top embossed with an anthracite Maybach pattern. The rear features Maybach‑logo taillights, a chrome-accented fascia, a diffuser and aerodynamic scoops.
Inside, both concepts feature sustainably tanned MANUFAKTUR Crystal White Exclusive Nappa leather, extending across the door panels, center console and the brand's signature comfort seats. The digital driver display and electrically adjustable center multimedia display feature Maybach-specific start-up animations and display themes. Additional Maybach hallmarks include the signature steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and illuminated stainless-steel door sills.
Powering the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is a handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, producing 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This performance translates into a 0–60 mph time of approximately 4.0 seconds, delivered via a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive system, ensuring optimal traction and driving safety in any driving condition. The advanced chassis features active hydraulic roll stabilization and rear-axle steering for agile, composed handling. Four drive programs - "Comfort," "Maybach," "Sport" and "Individual" – allow for tailored driving experiences. Extensive sound insulation, an acoustic soft top and a bespoke exhaust system provide the serene ride quality expected of a Maybach.
With its blend of bespoke craftsmanship, advanced engineering and thoughtfully curated design concepts, the SL 680 Monogram Series introduces a new dimension of luxury roadster—tailored, expressive and unmistakably Maybach.

$225K for that car is a ripoff and is not worth more than the SL 63 S E-Perfomrance which as a massive 816PS vs 585PS and costs $18k less.

The AMG SL 63 costs $187K nearly $40K cheaper with the same engine.

M-B key product strategists are depending on a Maybach SL Monogram Series client base with vast amounts of money and the inability to recognize tasteful, sophisticated elegance.

And looking at those prices for the SL, it's no wonder it doesn't sell. A SL should be a $115-185K car at most. SL53 I6, SL55 & SL63 V8 and the SL63 E Performance. 207K is absurd for a SL. The Maybach SL680 with a V12 could be 200K easily, and with all the Manufaktur options and true customization, 200K would be a steal. Mercedes is OUT TO LUNCH.

SL53 - 500hp I6, RWD only - $115K
SL55 - 577hp V8 RWD only - $140K
SL63 - 630hp V8 AWD - $160K
SL63e - 800hp V8+hybrid - 185K
SL680 - 621hp V12 - AWD - 225-250K - Full Manufaktur Catalog, only limit being your taste and wallet

The entire SL line needs to be available with some level of Manufaktur catalog.

Mercedes is OUT TO LUNCH.

Sadly, the impression that I share.

Not only in the context of pricing. But also in the context of product promotion and the proficient enhancing of brand equity. Somehow, CEO Ola Källenius has repeatedly managed to clutch a lifeline. But should the incoming new product offensive bring less than absolutely optimal results, I cannot possibly conceive him not being let go. But if and when that occurs, it may already be too late.

The 2025 IAA Mobility in Munich may be a far more crucial venue for the brand than many currently can imagine. VAG will be there in force and they simply HAVE TO BE. And BMW appears to be moving from strength to strength with increasing momentum and they may very well present something surprising as well as aspirational. Not to mention what Chinese manufacturers bring to the venue. A "meh" response to M-B's presentation there will certainly be toxic for the brand.

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
