Taycan [Official] Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is a battery electric luxury sports sedan and shooting brake car produced by Porsche.
Don't do it! I think you will regret it. I am often tempted to sell my GT3 to get something newer and more usable, but I know I will regret it. And getting one again costs way more.

Thanks for the input, Sunny. When you, a Porsche and BEV fan, are telling me not to do it then I sit up and take note. If I'm honest, I never thought I would see the day when I would be considering selling the R8. A few things have changed to tempt me...

1) It's becoming increasingly difficult to drive the R8 "enthusiastically", what with all the speed cameras and attitudes to speed on public roads in Europe.
2) My family situation means we cannot all go out in the car together. We'd have to get a babysitter for my wife to be able to even go for a ride in it. A Taycan wouldn't have that issue.
3) I've been lucky enough to own some nice cars over the last twenty years, but I've only ever owned one Porsche, a Boxster S, for one year, which I bought used. I really would like to buy into the whole Porsche ownership experience now, and the Taycan is a nice way to do it.
4) Without selling the R8, I would have to park the Taycan outdoors, and I don't want to do that to a €120,000 car.
5) Assuming the M3 is delivered next month, I will still get the ICE fix, albeit it's not a V10.
6) And finally, the one thing that is making me the most hesitant to sell the R8. I don't want one day for my son or sons to be sad that their daddy sold this wonderful car before they got a chance to experience it properly. My eldest (two and a half) is really showing a big interest in toy cars, and he loves going out in our 3 Series (I've taken him out in the R8 once), so it appears he's going to take after me when it comes to his interests.

I initially thought the plan would be to keep the M3 for a year and replace that with the Taycan, but I think the R8 is the one that has to go.

Anyway, I've not ordered the Taycan yet. I'll wait until after the test drive and see if I like it first.

No, just the RWD, and I've made it clear I don't want to drive anything other than that because the RWD will probably just feel slow in comparison. I'm under no illusions that the RWD will not be neck-snappingly quick. I'm more interested in getting the "Porsche" driving experience in the way I remember it in the Boxster. If it gives me that, I'll be happy.

I will watch that video with interest this evening. Will be curious to see why they didn't like it.

I haven't read this thread much but maybe you've already shared your experiences on the Taycan. I'll have a look through this thread later.

What spec is your GTS, and what was your 4S CT?

In Holland, even when I've added nearly €30,000 of options to the RWD, it's still nearly €20,000 more for the 4S to the same spec. I want to keep the price of the Taycan within a reasonable amount. I've negotiated an 8% discount on the selling price, which I believe is good. In the UK you would be laughed out of the showroom if you so much as mentioned the word "discount", and that was the case before the chip shortage, never mind during it. Wait time would be one year for the Saloon, and "Summer 2023" for the Sport Turismo.

No. I've already got a G21 330e Touring which will be staying, and a G80 M3 due to be built in a few weeks, so I didn't want another BMW product. As I've also got a W206 C-Class due in August, and the R8 V10, and four cars is the limit to what I can fit in my drive/garage, one car will have to go. It looks like it'll be the R8...

Anyway, no, I didn't consider the i4 of any iteration. I want the Taycan because it is just so desirable and looks like something from the future. A regular BMW sedan, but with a battery instead of an ICE, just doesn't tick that box. BMW's conventional models like the M3 are great. Their "future" models, like the iX and i4 just leave me utterly cold. I don't like the new interiors either. I'm afraid they may lose me as a customer if it continues. Add to that the price of the i4 M50 with a few options is not too far away from the base price of a Taycan, then it's a no-brainer to go for the Porsche.

You have done amazingly getting an 8% discount! I was able to sell my CT to another dealer for a tidy little profit given the scarcity of these vehicles here. They have then on sold it as a used car for even more money.

The CT 4S had about AUD$45K worth of options including the upgraded leather interior, panoramic sunroof, 21inch alloys etc. It all adds up very quickly with Porsche! In fact the price difference between my CT 4S and the GTS is only AUD$16K, because the GTS has that much standard equipment over the 4S. Considering that, I think the GTS will be much better for me on resale, if I don't end up selling it in a few months at a profit.

I look forward to your driving impressions!

PS...just park the M3 or W206 outdoors! The Taycan and R8 deserve to remain inside.

These are my GTS Specs:
I didn't select these specs. This is one of two vehicles the dealer that I sold the CT too had available.

The CT Specs were:

Don't, I repeat, do NOT get rid of the R8*. Yours with the 6-speed manual with iconic 1st gen design is a modern legend.

*Though the reasons you listed are logical and in the end, it comes down to what works for you, IF you can find a way to hold on to the R8, do it.

I have a double garage, but one side is unusable by a large car, so I only have one garage space and then the three spaces on the drive. So if I kept the R8, it would remain in the garage and the Taycan would be permanently parked outdoors. Whatever happens, the M3 is going to be parked outside.

That Neptune Blue looks superb. I saw a GTS last week when speaking to the dealer, but it was the Sport Turismo in Carmine Red. That is also a lovely colour.

I'm attempting to recreate the Mission-E look, so at the moment my spec is White with the Mission-E wheels. I'm in two minds whether to make the rims white like the Mission-E and Turbo S launch, or to keep them silver. The white rims edges are pretty full on, and I was watching a video last night and thought it's maybe a bit OTT.

With silver Mission-E rims.

Thanks for the advice. It's certainly not an easy decision. We'll see what Friday brings...

Went back to the dealer this afternoon, and there was a white Taycan with the white Mission-E wheels in the car park. I didn't like it so much.

I feel you Betty. I am in the same boat. I haven't driven the GT3 as it is meant to be in a long while now. Between fatherhood, new job and trying to stay passably fit, I have 0 energy for any hobbies. I seriously considered the Taycan for few months in 2020. The dealership even loaned me one. It is an awesome car - right amount of usability and sportiness for me. But that was the middle of the pandemic and I didn't need a car then.

Now I sort of want a new car, but can't get myself to spend 100k on an EV when there are so many special ICE cars I want to try before they are no more. We will probably get a cheaper EV for daily stuff at some point.

Have you considered a car lift? Good solution for an occasionally used car.

Now this is irrational/paranoid part of me (so don't let it effect you) - if/when I get an EV I would be very hesitant to park it in a garage attached to the house. They have way lesser chance of catching fire than an ICE vehicle, but if they do, it is very difficult to put it out. So if I got an EV (especially a newer model) it will be in the driveway at least for a while.

It sounds like you're in exactly the same boat as me. Do you do many roadtrips with your family? Let's say a distance of around 1,000 miles in total?

I drove the R8 yesterday, for the first time in a month, to the Porsche dealership so they could give me a valuation. Two things I took from that experience; it reminded me what a phenomenal drive it is, both from the way it handles and the noise it generates. And two, the reaction it got from people at the dealership when I parked up. Enthusiasm, people wanting to talk about it etc. Now I don't particularly want the attention, but it did put doubts in my mind as to why I would want to sell something which creates such a response in people. Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say.

We simply wouldn't have the space for a car lift. It's not something you see in Europe. Houses generally don't have the space as much as they do in the U.S.

Thanks for the heads-up. It would very much be in a garage attached to the house, so it's something to think about. I'm not going to worry about something which probably won't happen, so I won't let it affect me, as you say, but I do appreciate you pointing it out.

Anyway, I had a test drive yesterday. It was supposed to be Friday but the dealer called me up and said we could do it yesterday if I was free. The owner of the dealership is friends with a guy who's a professional racing driver, so he does test drives in his free time, so it was nice to have someone like that along to guide me through the experience, and to just chat cars.

Unfortunately, it was a 4S, which is not what I want, so I will be going back another time when they can get hold of a RWD. However, the 4S was impressive. We did a few launch controls and the first one was so brutal it took a few minutes afterwards to get my head around it. It's not as if I don't have experience of fast cars, but this was different. The figures on paper don't really tell you a true picture of how it "feels". God knows why anybody would need the Turbo S.

What did you drive, Sunny?

As a cruiser it was a nice place to be, and I'm sure the family would be happy in the back. So, I'm getting closer and closer to putting an order in. I just need to decide which car it replaces. The yet-to-arrive M3, or the R8.

I don't think I make anywhere near as many long road trips as you.. Just the occasional ~250 mile trip to get away for the long weekends.

Welcome to the world of EVs :).

Taycan Turbo (not S).

If it was me, definitely the M3 . Especially if you are keeping your PHEV 3 for the long road trips. Taycan has more overlap with M3 than R8.

That's exactly what I was thinking today. They're both essentially fast family cars, albeit with different propulsion.

I'm going to get my mind away from thinking of Taycans for 24 hours. It's consumed me far too much, so I think I need to switch off. I'm just a car nut and this process of choosing and speccing a new car is exciting whether it's a Porsche or a Ford.

I think I'll make the right decision in the end, and I'll be clearer once I get an offer for the R8.

Have you decided on your Taycan @Big Sam ?

Oh yes...Thanks for asking, by the way.

On Monday I was given the keys of a RWD version having previously been given a 4S in a thinly disguised attempt to "upsell" me a more expensive car. :ROFLMAO: I expected the RWD to be fast enough, but in reality it was way above my expectations in terms of performance. You simply don't need to drive faster on the public road. On paper the performance figures are merely "adequate", but more than any car I've driven, the paper figures are utterly meaningless. It "feels" much quicker than the data would suggest, and in fact, I strongly suspect the 0-100 km/h figure of 5.4 seconds is more like 5.0 seconds or less in real life. And even then, the instant torque means it feels quicker even than that. Other than during launch control, it felt as quick as the 4S. So, it needed to be just "not slow" for me to be happy, but it far exceeded my modest requirements. The steering was superb. Very Porsche-like, and clearly better than the 4S, IMHO.

That was Monday. Today I went back to the dealer and placed an order. A couple of curve balls, however. Overnight on Wednesday night, Porsche switched to the 2023 model year, with the expected price increase. I guess at around a 2% increase I should be grateful it wasn't more. The second curveball was that the initial one-year waiting time has now been reduced to a "September" delivery, thanks to the sales advisor keeping a slot open for me. Nice thought, but it means my M3 (which has just been built this week), will have to go quicker than I would like, as I've decided the Taycan will replace that, and the R8 is just too precious to me to sell.

As a car nut it's a special moment ordering a new Porsche, I'm not going to lie.

Brilliant! Congratulations.

Our price hikes were 7% across most of the range ??so you haven't done badly.

September is literally just around the corner.

What exterior and interior colours have you gone for?

Wow, 7%. And you pay more than most for imported cars anyway, is that right?

I went for Dolomite Silver for the exterior, and Blackberry full leather for the interior. That's a new colour for the interior, I believe, and was introduced with the RWD Taycan, along with the RS Spyder wheels which I've decided not to go for.

I also went for the Neodyme trim accents. The configurator is not accurate with respect to the Neodyme, because in reality it's not as "blingy" as it looks on there. Bling is not my style. It actually looks really classy. When I take delivery I will post the full spec. I did keep adding and adding, with the latest addition just before signing being the Panoramic roof.

I actually went for the Porsche crests on the headrests, too. Just forgot to include them for the purposes of that photo above.

Although Taycan has some drawbacks (weight and it also needs a bigger battery of app 100 kWh) it's still IMO the best car in the world. Great choice and looking forward to your comments especially in regard to EV vs Hybrid polemic.
