Haha!

This is Tata reinforcing that JLR is indeed an Indian brand. The car is named after an Indian village....

Someone tell the junk journalist from Autocar in the New Discovery thread who said something like '...British journalist in a British car...'

It's actually a name used for a Range Rover when the first generation was out.

No? o_O

Then Google & my mate from Chennai who points out the village named Velar in India does exist must be wrong as well...

^everything you read in google is not correct.
;)

The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover.[5] Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970. Most of these Velar pre-production vehicles are accounted for and have survived into preservation.[5]

Velar is how we spell it in spanish, actually.

So, would I be right in thinking that this car would target the Porsche Macan, the Merc GLC, the Volvo XC60 and so on?

I would consider this more of a tweener, the just like how the Evoque is a bit smaller than the aforementioned vehicles. In spirit it's along the lines of the GLC-coupe, F-pace, and Macan though.
