ID.3 [Official] Volkswagen ID.3

The German press has NOT been nice to this car. Autobild only gave it a 2+. For reference, they gave the Polestar 2 a perfect score of 1. Very unlike the German press that (obviously) supports German OEMs. This tells me that the ID.3 is probably a fairly mediocre car (more like a 2-) and the Polestar 2 is truly a gamechanger.

"For the price we would have expected more"

Rushed corner cutting hence an unacceptably lofty asking price is of great detriment to an otherwise rather impressive car. Alas, as the product stands now, it will be removed from the shortlist of many potential customers who once entertained the thought of purchasing an ID 3.

I don't mind plastic in the inside of cars nor dwell on it's quality as much as others here do, but that shiny black plastic everywhere is just beyond horrible. Last time I sat in a Golf, I remember being impressed with materials. Why not just use the stuff here?

Other thoughts -
The light control switches between the 2 displays seems so randomly placed.
The graphics - too small.

Have you tried the latest Golf yet? I find nothing whatsoever appealing to that interior and it's plastic, and would without a doubt prefer the ID3 over it. And visually too.

Ha, no. I think the last golf I was in was a 2014 (mk6?) GTI. I was assuming it only got better.

I wonder why Volkswagen selected Facebook to host their “first users forum”, to exchange ideas and questions and problems that users encountered with the new id.3 .
Facebook is well known for very weak protection of their users data. They showed that in the last years again and again. The most famous incident is that they allowed Cambridge Analytica to collect the personal data of 87 Million American users. After in depth analysis and combination of other sources Cambridge Analytica used this data to win a big influence on the American election in 2016.
So if Volkswagen has media specialists, why did they not warn against using Facebook ? Or why did the management not follow the advice of their specialists ?
To make it clear: It is a good idea to offer a forum for id.3 to exchange ideas and find help. But why not take a serious and secure provider ? Instead of forcing people to use Facebook if they want to have access to this kind of information exchange. In this way Facebook even gets rewarded for their insecure practices. In my eyes this is a very dumb decision, sorry VW.

What the car/automobile press writes is usually not very objective and not based on real facts. For years they have written terrible lies about Tesla cars. And now about the polestar ? AFAIK it has already problems and a callback is under way.
The ID.3 is not too bad, but the software is unfinished/incomplete (therefore the first users discount).
In the end you need a test drive to get the real impression. And you can only be sure to be sure after driving it maybe half a year or more. Give it a chance and forget the unreliable car/automobile press.

As I've previously stated: "...an otherwise impressive car."

VW will certainly address the criticism and attempt to ensure that the ID 3 is a desirable product in the sum of its' attributes. It's function as a "Brand Builder" is far too important to neglect.

EVs are different sport than ICE vehicles. For me is inapplicable to have the same management for both lines of vehicles. You need totally different people. All the senior management of the German manufacturers puts the emphasis on ICE vehicles. They want to share the resources and save as much as possible their existing structure. This is throwing a heavy burden on their EVs.

Agree-at least to a certain extent. I do perceive VAGs' and Daimler-Benz' (as of late) embracing of the dedicated EV paradigm less compromising and hence commendable. BMWs' model however tends to leave me a bit puzzled as I perceive it to be heavily compromised. As you've stated, genuinely good electric automobiles require dedicated electric platforms.

Not only this. Nor Diess, neither Källenius are good for this job. Although they are trying hard, they are more reacting, than proacting. They will always stay behind.

...but it can be wise to remember: "People who are late to the party often become the life of the party". Case in point: VWs' FWD hatchback offensive which was launched when the French, Italians and Brits had already long firmly established themselves in that particular segment of the market. What ensued was an entire segment often being referred to as "The Golf Segment" (Die Golfklasse).

Not when the booze at the party is already finished.

Oh, don't worry about that. We'll surely be seeing some imaginative cocktail concoctions in the future. Collaboration and cross pollination will be of utmost essence. VAG, Daimler-Benz and BMW "on the rocks" ? I personally don't think so. We may be seeing a centiliter or two of Tesla, Lucid, Rivian (aka as suppliers) in the mix.
