Autonomous safety tech helps Toyota Prius achieve Euro NCAP five-star rating
The fourth-generation Toyota Prius is the first car to receive a five-star rating in 2016 from Euro NCAP.
Not only that, at the same time it’s also the first vehicle to undergo Euro NCAP’s newest test of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) technology for pedestrians. In the new Prius , the system is incorporated in the Toyota Safety Sense package which also includes adaptive cruise control (with full speed following function) and lane departure alert.
In addition, the ever so popular hybrid bundles automatic high beam and road sign assist part of the same package which comes as standard across the entire range. At an additional cost, the latest Prius can be optionally fitted with even more safety kit, such as a blind spot monitor system and rear cross traffic alert.
The comprehensive safety kit has helped the 2016 Prius grab all of the five stars in Euro NCAP’s crash test, managing to achieve the following results: 92 percent score in adult occupant protection, 82 percent in child occupant protection, 77 percent in pedestrian protection, and 85 percent for safety assist.
Toyota is quoting Euro NCAP saying the Prius provided “good protection of all critical body areas” and achieved a maximum score for the autonomous emergency braking system’s performance. In addition, the full hybrid aced the side barrier impact test in which a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver’s door at 31 mph (50 kph).
Expect just about the same results from the recently introduced Prius Prime , the plug-in hybrid version that was unveiled last month in New York.
Besides testing the Prius, Euro NCAP also crashed the Suzuki Baleno which in standard guise earned three stars. Fitted with the optional Radar Brake Support safety pack which adds autonomous emergency braking, the hatchback gets an extra star.
