SLK/SLC [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK / SLC R172 facelift

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a compact executive roadster, produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was released in 1996 and was built at the Mercedes plant in Bremen, Germany, until the end of production in 2020. The former name "SLK" was derived from sportlich (sporty), leicht (lightweight), and kurz (short). With the release of the facelift R172 in 2016, the SLK-Class was renamed to SLC-Class in accordance with the revised nomenclature adopted by Mercedes. Under this scheme, roadsters use the base name "SL", followed by the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy, the letter "C", being the roadster equivalent to the C-Class.
Isn't BMW also keeping the same Z4 until 2020 ? Remember how roadsters used to be THE thing to have. Now, they're dead.

Also, I think they're dumping the SLK 55 -

BMW is partnering with Toyota for the next Z4. It seems there was going to be a smaller Z2 as well but the last thing I read was it got axed. I believe the Z4 should come sooner. Maybe 2018.

@Wolfgang so what´s the plan with MB roadsters then? Have this thing 9 years in the market (facelift in 2016, replacement in 2020) and the SL for some good 10 years?

Not sure yet when the updated SLC may be introduced. MB Passion claims we'll see first pictures in December before the premiere at NAIAS in Detroit, followed by a market introduction in 2016. The SL update might come earlier, at the LA auto show, they claim. We'll see. :)

Future generations may share the MSA, the modular sports architecture, which might also include the GT family? :)

The roadster does seem to be a dead breed now I would reckon the sports coupe (cayman, TT, GT86, BRZ) seem to be more popular, would be nice of Mercedes to come up with a fixed roof SLC type coupe.

I'm still shocked and appalled BMW are co-developing the next Z4 with Toyota. Rather kill the model.

MB Passion is reporting the facelifts of SL and SLK (SLC) will not have their premiere at the IAA.

Sorry for slightly going off-topic :) I just realized Rolf's new avatar - I loved the SLK concept in 1994. It still looks great today, maybe even more timeless and elegant than any of the three production car generations thus far...

Yes same with me I loved the look of this SLK concept it still looks so modern even though it was shown to the world over 20 years ago already! Timeless design and even more breathtaking than all the production versions. But out of the production versions I still think the first SLK looks the best.

The updated Mercedes-Benz SLK - which is to become the "SLC" - will arrive in 2016, and be shown for the first time publicly in January 2016 at the NAIAS 2016 in Detroit. The name change to SLC is historically controversial, since in 1971 the SLC was a closed sports coupe of the C 107 series.

The front and rear bumpers will change, in addition to switching to LED lights on the front the rear lights may come with new lighting graphics. In the interior the navigation and assistance system will be updated, incl. integrated Mercedes-Benz remote services.

The SLC may receive new wheels and a new SLC 450 AMG sports model, which could replace the 55 AMG version from Affalterbach.

The new SLC - representing a mere facelift of the SLK series 172 - arrives in the spring on the market. The freshened roadster, however, will not be shown at the LA Auto Show in November 2015 (where the SL roadster and the GL - now as GLS - in the respective facelifted variants are expected), the little roadster with the star premiers at the NAIAS 2016 Auto Show in January in Detroit, where we will also be on site. The change in nomenclature from SLK to SLC makes no sense. MB's reason for changing established nameplates like ML, GL etc were to align these vehicles with their sedan brethren. The SLK is NOT related to the C in any way and the new name will only add to the confusion. I have always thought of the SLK as a miniature SL. Hence SL"K" - K in this instance standing for 'Klein' which I believe means small in German.

That is actually incorrect, every SLK has been based on the current C-Class chassis. The current SLK is based on the previous C platform, so of course they are related. Always have been.

I believe SLK is an acronym for Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz, which translates to sporty, light, and short.

Good to know. I had no idea they were so closely linked given the disparity between their wheelbase.

The SLC is going to be a looker. Those slimmer/smaller headlamps are going to do wonders for this design. The headlights were the only real problem, unlike the SL.

Front lights were never an issue for me on this car. It was actually the rear lights that I always found too big, and it doesn't look like they decreased them in the facelift.

Still very curious to see if they did anything with the small screen... A lot tighter in there to make the changes they made on the GLE.

SLC AMG to get turbocharged V6?
