G-Class [Spyshots] 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

Since this is definitely a new G-Class we should create an own thread.

Here is all we know about the next generation G-Class or G-Wagon:

What It Is: After nearly four decades, an all-new Mercedes-Benz G-wagen is coming. Yes, really. Granted, you might not be able to tell at a first, or even second, glance, since Mercedes-Benz is being cautious about updating the now classic off-roader’s styling. Under the skin, however, much is new, and the new G-wagen will be a far better vehicle offering performance on par with the competition. As before, the next G-wagen—or G-class, as Daimler's marketing types prefer to call it—features a near-vertical windshield and door glass, a side-hinged tailgate, and an exterior-mounted spare. The G again will be offered with a range of six- and eight-cylinder engines, with a possible V-12 topping the lineup. The main visual difference is the wider body. The G-wagen will grow four inches wider; its length and height, however, will remain virtually unchanged. Its aerodynamics will improve, mainly thanks to a cleaner underbody and fine-tuned details. The interior will be thoroughly reworked for a far more cohesive and highly contemporary look. The current model's interior looks as if it were assembled from several parts bins left over from the past few decades, mostly because it has been.

Why It Matters: The G-wagen by Mercedes-Benz (and Mercedes-AMG) is one of the most expensive and prestigious SUVs, with buyer demographics other automakers would kill for. It commands prices from $120K upward and is the pride of many a multi-car garage in the most prestigious burgs. But its on-road performance has been an embarrassment for some time now: With its ancient chassis and high center of gravity, the G-wagen doesn't corner much better than it did almost 40 years ago, and the incredibly powerful engines with up to 621 horsepower only underscore the deficiencies of its chassis. With the competition launching a flurry of cutting-edge vehicles in the segment, today’s G-wagen is no longer a sustainable alternative. The upcoming model will be.

Platform: We hear the G-wagen continues to use structural elements from the predecessor, and that its wider chassis will use a new suspension for improved handling, stability, and comfort. The hydraulically assisted steering system will yield its place to an electromechanical design. An entirely new electronic architecture allows for the latest driver-assistance systems, as well as telematics and infotainment. Thanks to liberal use of high-strength steel and aluminum, the portly G-wagen also is likely to shed a few hundred pounds.

Powertrain: The G-wagen's core models, the G550 and the AMG G63, will be powered by two versions of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. Europe will also see a six-cylinder diesel, an option unlikely to appear in the U.S. It’s possible that, eventually, there will be another AMG G65, powered by a twin-turbocharged V-12. Power will be transferred to all wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission; AMG models could keep the current seven-speed gearbox.

Competition: Bentley Bentayga, BMW X7 (upcoming), Cadillac Escalade,Lamborghini Urus (upcoming), Rolls-Royce SUV.

Estimated Arrival and Price: We expect the next-gen G-wagen to be unveiled in late 2017 and to appear in showrooms in early 2018. Pricing will remain close to that on the current model, which starts at $120,000 for the G550. Don't expect a follow-up to the G-wagen 4x4 squared any time soon, and the entry-level Professional model will remain absent from our shores as well.

Mercedes-Benz’s iconic G-Class is about to receive its first full redesign since the nameplate’s launch.

Our latest spy shots reveal what appears to be the same boxy G-Class that’s been with us—in civilian form—since 1979, but if you look a little closer you’ll notice some key differences.

The prototype is significantly wider than the current G-Class, with our photographer telling us there’s close to 4.0 inches of extra girth. Elements like the windscreen, hood and grille are all noticeably wider than on the current model.

The wider body and corresponding wider track has been adopted in order to accommodate new suspension that aims to improve stability on and off the road while also improving interior space. At the same time, the new model’s body is shorter. This can clearly be seen in shots where both the prototype and existing G-Class are present.

Another key change should be the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel in the construction to help reduce weight, possibly cutting the current model’s 5,665-pound curb weight by as much as 440 lb. There should also be the latest from the Mercedes technology portfolio including new driver-assist features, electronic power steering, and an advanced infotainment system.
629266e4ec14d21ab47309cdbbd35b6c.webp

Despite the changes, the new G-Class should remain as rugged as ever. For example, the ride height doesn’t appear to be changing and it looks like a live axle remains at the rear. We’d also expect a permanent all-wheel-drive system, reduction transfer case, and three differential locks to remain.
One of the main reasons for the design overhaul is stricter emissions regulations. Thus we may end up seeing some more fuel-efficient options in the powertrain department including a possible plug-in hybrid setup. Mercedes’ new inline-6 enginesare expected to be offered though in the United States a V-8 engine should feature primarily. Of course, Mercedes-AMG options will still be on offer, as they currently account for more than 50 percent of G-Class sales worldwide.

The new G-Class is expected to bow in 2018, as a 2019 model. Its arrival will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the G-Class nameplate. A new Land Rover Defender is due to arrive about the same time, thus keeping the rivalry between the ultimate utilities alive.

Despite its staying power, the G-Class came very close to meeting its demise only a few years ago. Mercedes had even launched final edition models in some markets and was ready to kill off the icon, but strong demand from the U.S., Russia and China—thankfully—persuaded the automaker to reverse course.

Note, Mercedes is working on two related models. One is a G-Class-based military vehicle dubbed the Light Armored Patrol Vehicle (LAPV). Another is a new compact SUV inspired by the G-Class and thought to be called a GLB.

We reveal the secrets behind the all-new Mercedes G-Class

2017 will see the premiere of an all-new Mercedes G-Class. Wider track, electromechanical steering, independent suspension and new engines: Daimler modernizes the G-Wagon from the ground up.

For 35 years the Mercedes G-Class was built on the same technical principle – now, some of those attributes will fundamentally change! Visually, the 2017 model, codenamed W464, remains true, however, to its rugged nature and boxy proportions.

For more space in the cockpit, the new G-Class will gain extra width: up to ten centimeters more will take the width to 1.97 meters. In addition to the wider track, the future G-Wagon gets an electromechanical steering and independent suspension. Mercedes wants to finally elevate the ride comfort to a contemporary level.

In terms of assistance systems, the new G-Class also enters the new millennium with autonomous driving functions that should allow it to drive up to a speed of 130 kilometers per hour on its own.

With lighter materials such as aluminum, the G-Class in 2017 could slim down by 200 kilos. In the engine department, the next G-Class comes with with the three-liter diesel and petrol straight-six engines set to debut on the new E-Class, top power could be up to 360 hp. Prices will probably continue to increase with a 90,000 euros minimum price.

I think the most important thing in all of Mercedes' plans are these new engines. The new I6 will be a revelation because MB's V6s are at the end of their development lives IMO. It's about time for the 4L V8 to step in to replace the 5.5 and 4.7L V8s also.

^ Do you have to mention the MB I6 in literally every post???

And you honestly think a new engine is the biggest issue for the G wagon?? Because the engines is very far from the biggest problem with this car. The engines actually are the most modern parts.

Do you have to respond to me at all? I honestly don't know why you bother. I couldn't possibly care any less about having a conversation with you about anything.

Mercedes is testing a lot of more engines that you can think in this moment. And you will see anything soon.

The G-Wagen has been boxy since its inception, and thankfully it will remain that way in its next iteration.

The venerable off roader in civilian guise has been around since the late 1970s and has remained basically the same over the years, with a few updates from time to time. One thing that hasn’t changed at all is the boxy shape, which the latest spy images are showing will soldier on for the W464 generation due to arrive by the end of 2017.

While the shape will remain virtually unchanged, an increase in width of approximately four inches (10 centimeters) will give the G-Class a beefier appearance and at the same time will free up more space inside the cabin. The very few changes on the outside might tempt you to believe the new version will be nothing more than a facelift of the current model, but in reality the next G will bring some comprehensive mechanical changes.

That’s because Mercedes will utilize a different platform for its reputable off roader, one that is expected to shave off as much as 900 pounds (408 kilograms). That honestly sounds too good to be true, but even if it won’t cut so much fat, the new G-Wagen is hitting the gym hard. The draconian diet alone will make the new G-Class a lot more efficient than the current model, but we are expecting the latest engines to further contribute to lower fuel consumption and emissions. Maybe the recently announced inline-six turbodiesel with 313 horsepower (230 kilowatts) will be offered at some point in the future, following its introduction next year in the facelifted S-Class.

This and the S class are the two vehicles that MB really do well. Seeing a G Class on the road is always an occasion even a G350 guise it has immense presence. One of the few Mercs I'd love to own one day.

2018 Mercedes G63 AMG Spotted for the first time

It was only a couple of weeks ago when we shared a batch of spy shots with the next-generation Mercedes G-Class and now the venerable off-roader is making a comeback in fresh spy content. This time around, it’s the stronger G63 as evidenced by the wider fenders to make room for the chunkier wheels, while at the front it has larger air vents to improve engine cooling.

Thankfully, Mercedes is keeping the new G-Wagen (W464) just as boxy as the original 1979 model and in the AMG specification it’s going to look more aggressive to match the extra grunt coming from underneath the hood. Power is expected to be provided by the now familiar biturbo 4.0-liter V8 available in a wide array of models and in multiple outputs. In its strongest iteration, the E63 S, the eight-cylinder motor unleashes 603 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters), but it’s too soon to say whether the G63 will receive the full power. Even if it won’t, it will still be stronger than the outgoing 563-hp model.

A weight loss of approximately 900 pounds (408 kilograms) is being mooted, although it’s hard to believe Mercedes’ engineers will be able to cut so much fat. If by any chance it will turn out to be true, it means the new G63 will be way faster than the current model that needs 5.4 seconds until 62 mph (100 kph) before maxing out at 130 mph (210 kph). The diet should also pay dividends in terms of fuel economy over the existing G63 rated by EPA at 11 miles per gallon in the city and 13 mpg on the highway, while in Europe the G63 consumes 17.2 liters and 11.8 liters, respectively.

The regular next-gen G-Class is expected to be unveiled sometime next year, with the Frankfurt Motor Show set for September likely to be the venue of choice. As for the G63, it will likely arrive in the second half of 2018 and should be followed shortly by its V12-powered G65 counterpart.

2018 Mercedes G-Class caught testing alongside beefy G63
The Mercedes snow patrol reporting for duty.

The venerable off roader looks virtually the same on the outside, but there are some big changes underneath that swirly camo. Some would say it’s about time taking into account the G-Class is the oldest model in Mercedes’ lineup, stretching back to the late 1970. That being said, we should point out it has received several updates during this interval, with the most important one being in 1990 when the W463 generation came out. An overhaul is currently in the works and we have the spy images to prove it, with both the regular G-Class and its range-topping G63 companion spotted undergoing winter testing.

While the shape is going to be as boxy as ever, rumor has it Mercedes has plans to increase width by around four inches (10 centimeters), which will obviously pay dividends in terms of space inside the cabin where we are also expecting a digital dashboard. Even though it will be bigger, switching to modern underpinnings will allow the G-Wagen to lose as much as 882 pounds (400 kilograms) if we were to rely on the rumor mill. That will boost not only efficiency and handling, but also performance.

3cd36eaa6c4e771ee93999d52658841f.webp

Speaking of which, the G63 will wave goodbye to the biturbo 5.5-liter engine to make room for Mercedes-AMG’s biturbo 4.0-liter V8. It’s unclear at this point how much power it will have, but we do know the eight-cylinder engine is already available in different states of tune. Its output ranges from 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) and 480 pound-feet (650 Newton-meters of torque) inside the C63 to a massive 603 hp (450 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) in the new E63 S. If we were to make a wager, the next G63’s power will be closer to the E63 rather than the C63. Regardless of how much punch it will pack underneath the hood, it’s going to be delivered to both axles through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Expect the regular G-Class to be unveiled in the second half of 2017, with the icing-on-the-cake G63 to bow likely in the first part of 2018. Production will continue to be the responsibility of contractor Magna Steyr at its factory in Graz, Austria where the 20,000th G-Class built in 2016 recently rolled off the assembly line.

I need to buy me one of those at some point in my life.

Sadly even 15 year old second hand offerings still keep their prices in brand new C180 territory!
