GLC [Spyshots] Mercedes 2016 GLC (GLK Coupe)

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a compact luxury crossover SUV introduced in 2015 for the 2016 model year that replaced the GLK-Class. According to Mercedes-Benz, it is the SUV equivalent to the C-Class.
Something like that would have stunned the market for the current GLK.

M
True, but only a part of it. Those that bought the GLK due to its design, would indeed have to think twice if a GLC existed, but those who bought the GLK as the most affordable SUV from MB (ie for bragging rights, to name one example) wouldn't really care.

The Mercedes-Benz Blog and Autobild summarised future coupes recently. :)

The German automotive constructor will start the renewal of its coupe model portfolio with the 2014 E-Class Coupe, coming in spring.

The next to arrive is the future S-Class Coupe (C 217) variant that is replacing the outgoing CL-Class (C 216) and tipped for world premiere in 2014. The entire technology pack comes from the forthcoming S-Class sedan (W 222), so expect a great level of safety and connectivity aboard the 2-door model. The design philosophy will combine classic elements preserved from the predecessors with a futuristic styling combining progressive and organic shapes and lines.

In around two years Mercedes-Benz will also mark the launch of the company's first Sports Utility Coupe (SUC) vehicle under the MLC moniker (C 292). The new addition to the family will be assembled at the Tuscaloosa plant, being the fifth model to be built at the Alabama-located facility alongside the C-Class, M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class. The body will sport 5 doors, but the general design will be inspired by the sleek silhouette of the real Mercedes-Benz coupes. A rakish roofline, dropping dramatically towards the rear end, and an eye-catching progressive styling will convert the future MLC into a complete looker. Prior the official unveiling, we expect Mercedes-Benz to tease the series model with a concept showcar in early 2014.

The SUC family will further grow in 2015 with the advent of the middle class contender: the new GLC, in fact the GLK Coupe. The model will emphasize a dynamic design, similar to the bigger MLC. While we do expect at least minimal 4x4 capabilities from the 4MATIC system, the land where the GLC will feel at home is the road, either in the cities or outside them. Most certainly, the new all-wheel-drive powertrain, derived from the MRA rear-driven platform of the future C-Class 205 series, will be tweaked to deliver sensational driving performance, with an accent on sharp stability, agility and behavioural predictability.

There is also a possibility the engineers from Affalterbach will develop high sports variants for the MLC and GLC. Then, the future MLC63 AMG and GLC63 AMG could be scheduled to bow towards 2016 and they should use V8 engines with direct injection and bi-turbocharging, with around 550 hp for the C292 M-Class AMG Coupe and near 480 hp for the other GLC AMG Coupe.

Sounds good to me, but I guess they decided not to do the retro GLK (mini G-class).

Thank you for the reminder, HOH. Checked progress on the GLG and MB seems to be still working on it. Might appear later than 2015 though, in case MB engineers decide to base it on the second generation of the new compact car generation. :D

Mercedes mulling GLG baby G-wagen for 2015

Mercedes is considering a small G-wagen-inspired SUV0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp to tackle the upcoming Land Rover Defender replacement in 2015, as well as modernising the G’s charming but rather outdated form.

Likely christened as ‘GLG’, the new car0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp will get G-wagen styling cues, a range of downsized engines, and a hot AMG version with around 350bhp.

Tell me more about where the Mercedes GLG will sit in the range

On the continent, Mercedes will sell you a BMW X3-sized SUV called GLK. The angular styling was partly inspired by the good ol’ fashioned G-wagen, but its polarising looks and lack of right-hand drive option limited the sales potential for the car. The GLG is designed to reclaim lost ground in the popular crossover segment, and would sit on the MFA platform of the new Mercedes A-class.

Codenamed X156 and internally nicknamed ‘mini-G’, the car is ostensibly a mud-plugging sister to the road-biased GLA coupe-crossover that’ll arrive in 2014. Yes, Merc is planning two separate crossovers based on the new A-class family.

The 'mini-G' will instead show off a taller, more upright stance, and visual links to the original G-wagen. The roof will be long and almost horizontal all the way back to the upright tailgate, while the butch and geometric wheelhouses appear grafted onto the slab-sided body.

This boxy styling hints to buyers at plenty of space and excellent visibility, hopes Mercedes. Other G cues that could be incorporated include an external spare wheel mounted on an asymmetric carrier, boxed-off taillights integrated in the rear bumper, front wing-top indicators, round headlamps and full-length rubbing strips. However, the aerodynamics will be necessarily superior to the barn-door G-class.

What about underneath the boxy styling of the Mercedes GLG?

Despite the workmanlike pretensions, Mercedes is considering a front-wheel drive version of the Mini-G. It might seem unthinkable, but Land Rover is also preparing a two-wheel drive version of its future workhorse.

Having said that, Merc does expect a high take-up for the 4Matic versions which distribute torque between the axles via a Haldex clutch and the on-board computers rather than the original G-wagen’s three separate diff locks. If you crave off-road go to match the show, there’s the option of a GLK-inspired tech pack featuring hill descent control, special 4WD drive mode selector, stacked suspension and skid plates.

As for under the bonnet, the engine line-up will be largely identical to the A and B-class motors. Petrols come in the form of a 1.6-litre with 122bhp, or a 2.0-litre with either 156bhp or 211bhp. Meanwhile, there are four diesels to be offered: a 1.8-litre/109bhp, and a 2.1-litre in differing states of tune good for 136bhp, 170bhp, or 204bhp.

For performance nuts, the range will be topped by a 350bhp GLG45 AMG equipped with stronger brakes, a seven-speed automatic gearbox, quicker steering and a re-engineered front axle.

Another niche busted! When can I buy a Mercedes ‘mini-G’?

Mercedes hasn’t signed off the project yet, so if it does get the green light soon, the earliest possible launch date isn’t until mid-2015. Mercedes has a very busy design cycle but after CEO Dieter Zetsche recently confirmed ten all-new models by 2020, there’s still some way to go to plug all those gaps (the CLS Shooting Brake being the first.)

CAR’s sources report that the ‘mini-G’ is definitely first in line for approval, ahead of all other options waiting in the wings, like A-class coupé and cabrio, or B-class saloon and larger MPV0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp.

The GLG may be part of the new three variant Ener-G-force inspired lineup? ;)

Might include the compact GLG, the new larger GLK expected around 2015, the mid-sized M-Class LCI and maybe a luxurious S-Class based SUV in the GL-Class or above with TerraScan, a new offroad version of MBC. If smart is also included the smart crosstown concept shown at the IAA 2005 might give some hints on what's to come. The original G may likely retain its design with just a few minor refinements, as the Gelände capability of the Schökl proven workhorse is already high and difficult to improve upon.

Mercedes-Benz officials won't be drawn out on specifics just yet, but highly placed sources claim the Ener-G-Force is the forerunner to a three-vehicle lineup of Land Rover-rivaling off-roaders set to join the German carmaker's portfolio in the future. They will be based around existing platforms and driveline combinations.

“The Ener-G-Force invokes the genes of the G-class. It could also be a clue about a new beginning for the off-road design idiom of Mercedes-Benz,” said Gorden Wagener, head of Mercedes design.

Styled at the firm's advanced design studio in Carlsbad, Calif., the Ener-G-Force updates the functional, go-anywhere appearance of the 33-year-old G-class with a bold look that provides clues for the how the company's SUV lineup will look in the future. Autoweek understands the portfolio has been conceived to include compact, midsize and luxury variants in a move aimed at providing broader customer appeal than today's G-class.

I'd love for MB to produce a model to put an end to Range Rovers claims of 'superiority'.

This whole idea of producing more utilitarian 'niche' offroaders is baffling to me. The GLK was relatively poorly received, so why persist with the concept.

The Mercedes-Benz Blog published this render a while back. :)

Mercedes-Benz SUVs of the future: GLA, MLC, GLC and more to come

From 2016, an SUC will also join the portfolio. The future GLC will follow the footprints of the MLC, which means a coupe greenhouse fitted to a four-door body. The GLC-Class will share the technical equipment with the new GLK, which also borrows its systems and engines from the new C-Class. While AMG models are still in doubt, the new GLK 400 and GLC 400, both boasting a maximum output of 333 hp from a 3.0-litre V6 BlueDIRECT engine, will be the available high-end variants. The new straight-six petrol powerplants with bi- or tri-turbocharging are prone to debut in around three years from now, so probably the current "V" units will then be replaced for the GLK and GLC as well, together with a power boost up to around 360 hp.

Seriously, between the X6 and this, I just don't see the purpose of getting these compromised cars. No amount of marketing jargon will convince me otherwise.

Hmm...the C&D renders look too derivative of the original to have any real impact. It looks too much like the Accord Crosstour (in an unpleasant way).
