Looks like the wagon version of the Impreza, sits between the Impreza and Legacy in size. It will have the engine from the WRX or something closely related to it. Not sure why Subaru paired the engine with a CVT gearbox.

Subaru Australia wants the Subaru Levorg sports tourer wagon that was unveiled at today’s 2013 Tokyo motor show.

The Subaru Levorg is initially planned for sale in Japan only from early 2014, though the brand’s local arm says it is already in talks with parent company Fuji Heavy Industries about positioning the model between the Impreza small car and Liberty medium car.

“Obviously [the Levorg] has got huge appeal for us and we’ve put our hand up for it,” Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior told CarAdvice in Tokyo. “It’s a completely new model. It’s a new genre. The discussions have started about possibility of the if and when.

“Subaru has historically been very good at identifying new opportunities – look at Forester, look at XV – and I think this sports tourer concept, where you have high performance but also versatility [has a market].

“And the versatility of the Levorg… it essentially has the same cargo carrying ability as current Liberty, so it’s space efficient.”

At 4690mm long, the Subaru Levorg sits between the Impreza hatch and Liberty wagon in size. Its 2650mm wheelbase is 100mm shorter than the axle-to-axle distance of the Liberty wagon. The Levorg’s underpinnings comprise a front section borrowed from the Impreza, though Subaru says the rest is unique to the wagon.

The all-wheel-drive Levorg will be powered by a choice of direct fuel injection ‘boxer’ four-cylinder turbo engines – in 1.6- and 2.0-litre sizes. The smaller engine produces 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque, with the bigger horizontally opposed engine generating 221kW and 400Nm.

The 2.0-litre version, which will produce closer to 200kW based on non-Japanese measurements, is shared with the upcoming Subaru WRX.

Both engines are mated with continuously variable transmissions, with the bigger engine adopting a sportier version of the auto.

Hey @Monster... thanks for posting. Seems like you and I are the only ones interested in posting anything Subaru-related these days.

Ok so, in the light of the worldwide release of some truly spectacular looking vehicles - particularly the new C-Class and the Macan - Subaru once again, so adroitly, bring us car lovers back down to Earth. The Levorg (a supposed amalgam of Legacy, Revolution and Touring, but my oh my what an awful name) is decidedly less attractive when compared to the sexier stuff that's recently been released. And yet - for a Subaru - it's not bad, not bad at all, given what we've had to stomach since the gorgeous hawk-eyes Legacy left the building.

The Levorg is an important car for Subaru fans - it brings with it a return to sporting versatility that was lost when the previous-generation WRX Sportwagon was discontinued. Whilst it never sold in significant numbers outside of Japan, those who did have them, loved them. Of greater importance is that the Levorg formally heralds the launch of an engine that is vital for Subaru's competitiveness in the global emissions-and-enviro-conscious market conditions that all car makers face. The 1.6 DIT Boxer is the first of its kind and enables Subaru to pursue Symmetrical AWD as a core engineering philosophy without penalising the maker for not meeting emissions and efficiency standards. The CVT transmission is integral to this outcome too; clever programming allows for reduced throttle position and torque-optimised transmission ratio determination. FHI has invested heavily in the Lineartronic CVTs and Sport CVTs because they had to. There isn't an off-the-shelf transmission solution available to FHI for their unique all-wheel drive layout and Subaru - as so often is the case - is forced to engineer a solution that dovetails as pragmatically as possible within the boundaries of packaging, application and output capability.

Clearly, the CVT coupled to the 1.6 DIT is there for meeting emissions requirements as best as possible. With a low torque output of 250 Nm, a six-speed manual transmission isn't out of the question and only time will tell. The problem with the 2.0 DIT engine is that Subaru does not have a non-STI manual transmission (that thing is huge, heavy and engineered like a truck 'box) that can cope with the 400 Nm torque output of the engine. The high-torque CVT first seen in the Legacy is well up to the task whilst still aiding as best as possible in the fuel efficiency stakes.

There's a lot of consternation around Subaru's implementation of CVTs. Old CVTs are terrible. Subaru's CVTs - thanks to huge mechanical and software advances - are the very best that are on the market. I was truly impressed with how smooth and responsive the transmission was when allied with the new generation of DIT Boxer engine. Just like massive advances have been made in conventional slush box technology, so too have big steps been made by FHI in the CVT arena. Dual Clutch Transmissions simply do not meet the standards required of the primary Subaru values of robustness, reliability and consistency of operation in all conditions.

Sounds like a mythical creature... "We must not awaken the Levorg or doom be upon us all" :D

I like the new grill, this weirdly named station wagon is a good looking one.

I also like Subaru's philosophy and I admire their courage to not care about things like soft plastics or that everyone and his mother offers a DCT.

I admire this company because its engineering, as opposed to marketing, driven.

If this is the next gen Legacy wagon (which it seems it is), then it's big improvement over the current gen. I do wish, though, that the interior was a bit more different than the Impreza/WRX.

It's most certainly not a Legacy wagon - that's still on the way - this is an Impreza station wagon. Compare the dashboard to other Impreza platform cars.

There are quite a few family men in America who think they are not well catered to, and that's because there just aren't enough wagons on offer. More of them are coming this year, like the 2015 Golf Sportsvan and the Volvo V60, but Subaru has an even better car that it's keeping to itself.

This is the Levorg, a wagon version Legacy that's sportier and easier on the eye than the Outback. We've secretly harbored curiosity for this car since it was revealed as a concept. This in-depth walkaround video was taken recently by our friends at Driver's High Channel just as the first examples started arriving at Japanese dealerships. We definitely like what we see: big boot, spacious interior finished in typical Subaru materials and a sharper exterior design than any American model.

But the best part of all is the engine, which on paper sounds far superior to anything on the market. The Levorg 2.0GT-S is powered by a 2-liter boxer engine, similar to the one in the BRZ. Only it's turbocharged to produce 300 hp (211 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. According to the realistic Japanese JC08 test cycle, fuel economy is a very reasonable 13.2 km/l, equivalent to 31 mpg.

Prices for this 300 hp wagon in Japan start at 3,564,000 yen, around $33,900. That's about the same as a full-spec Outback with a 3.6-liter engine, which oddly makes less power. You can also get it with a 1.6-liter turbo engine making 170 hp that still has permanent all-wheel drive.

It doesn't have a factory sound system?
Even tho the car is trying to look modern there's too much stuff that looks at least a decade old on it.
The devil is in the details and they are awful on this Subaru. Might be a good package tho.

With the Levorg finally arriving on the Australian market with in the next 2 months, my interest of this car is picking up.

The car looks great with the full WRX front end conversion, including front fender and bumper.

If only it didn't have such a terrible name!
Totally agree, it is suppose to mean Legacy Revolution Touring, those wacky japs. Despite the de-tuned engine and the standard CVT gearbox, I am actually pretty excited with this car than I thought I would be.
