Hot! Volkswagen: What's Next

VW customers like boring and familiar.

Better said: "as timeless and class-neutral as possible". Cars that appeal to a very broad demographic while maintaining the air of solidity and pleasant, familiar design. IMHO, the Volkswagen brand (along with Skoda) does this well. A notch above comparable, for example, Stellantis or Ford Europe products and a notch below BMW, M-B and Audi.

This car is a very bold step for VW, the front styling is so smooth and aerodynamic but with unusual for VW headlights. I do like the rear also looks different.

I like it too.

Although that black piece just under the hood's side shutline forwards of the rearview mirror is an eyesore. It was absent on the ID.EVO concept. Some sort of camera or sensor, I suspect.

I think it has a certain originality and the modernity needed today (especially the front, which I think is a success), even more so when compared to the outdated, invisible and repetitive Chinese VWs of until recently.

If they launch a saloon looking like this it will be amazingly sleek and handsome.

Should this car actually be similar in size to the new Xpeng P7, it will slot right into the sub-luxury upper executive sedan segment with a length in excess of 5000mm and a width around 1960+mm without rearview mirrors. Right around G60 BMW i5 territory.

That would be interesting as the camouflaged pre-production prototypes do not appear that large.

I've read that Volkswagen AG along with Chinese joint-venture partners SAIC, FAW, Anhui and Xpeng will be presenting 20 (!!) new BEVs in 2026 alone. It is truly remarkable how development and manufacturing processes have dramatically accelerated.

Now that is agile thinking by VW and a great way to reduce their development costs. That is the strengths of the Chinese car manufacturers, they are much quicker to bring out new models with higher tech features than the German brands. Instead of facelifting a car every 4 years the Chinese bring out changes every 2 years at least especially on battery and charging improvements.
