Vs BMW 5-Series G31 vs. Competitors

I actually - pulling the ultimate fence-sitter move - will say that, from an exterior perspective all 3 (and 4 if V90 is to be considered) look fantastic.

The Merc looks regal, the Audi, sharp and the BMW sporty. Business as usual then.

For me - and this a personal preference - the lack of a gearlever in the centre console of the Merc is an ergonomic flaw. Sure, people will say that "you get used to it" but you can't deny the superior usability, control and ease of use of a centre-mounted gearlever. Y'see, the reason Merc do this is to save costs on the interior - one centre console fits all for both RHD and LHD cars. Clever - sure - but one man's clever is another man's cheap.

The BMW's modern, edgy interior is far more appealing to my tastes than the other two cars here.

I do t think the V90 is a particularly good looking car that reat end just ruins it for me although the front looks good. I can't stand the rear those taillight a are a mess.

^ It seems I've accidentally stumbled onto the kindergarten edition of Germancarforum, and someone's missed their nap.

Anyhoot, despite it having been around for a while, I'd probably still choose the Audi. However, I have to say that in the right spec, the Merc is quite tempting too.

@klier
I prefer sedan Merc/BMW, but for estate, Audi is more suitable.
Maybe reason is because Merc and BMW looking better in sedan version than Audi ( IMO ), while Audi sedans doesn't have too much to lose and that's why Avant often looks better than sedan, at least here in A6 case, A3 is exception.
I don't like fwd too, but lastest Volvo's are beautiful, and my favourite car after Mercedes is A8. :)
I guess that Audi sales more estates than Merc and BMW.

Why don't you just take a Passat and save some money?

Or, a Skoda Superb Combi. Appears to be excellent too. It's all the same.

The 5er. It's absolutely brilliant and highly competent. It combines everything without complete focus on just the usual specifics.

Sorry Scott, but for me the 5er went out of production in 2004 and hasn't been seen since.

BMW is sporty machine, and that's why fans love it, but in terms of luxury, comfort, they never can match Mercedes.

So the G30, F10 and even the E39 were just a dream of mine.
Been asleep for 20 years! Need to wake up!
*bites his thumb off*.... Ouch! Thanks, Wand! High four!

@mini_cooper4
They all are stiffer than equivalent Merc.
May I ask why you take Merc V12 biturbo for avatar ? :)
Seems that you don't like Merc, based on what I saw till now.
What I wrote is reason why S class dominate segment, from beginning till now and still dominating...

Floaty and soft doesn't necessarily mean comfort.
Leveled and composed doesn't necessarily mean stiff.

PS: I love the S-Class(any S-Class but the W220).
I also am not a huge fan of modern BMWs.
Still... even today black is black and white is white, and I simply don't wear tinted glasses.

@mini_cooper4
I meant in that way, suspension comfort.
They are all ok mainly in terms of seats, interior space is simmilar.
Here we don't have perfect roads so comfy suspension is appreciated.

I have to disagree with this.
All three have automatic transmissions, so the cars are doing the shifting for you.
You only have to put the car in PNDR, that's it. During the drive, your right hand is not in this area unless you like to rest your right hand on the shifter. So basically the shifter is sitting there as a useless handstand. The only other reason your right hand would be in this area is to send (or touch)
a command briefly on the screen. A good driver has both hands on the steering wheel (in an automatic), eyes on the road and in the mirrors ready in defense to make a move he cannot predict ahead of time depending on the situation. This is probably one of the chief reasons MB moved the shifter up to the steering wheel.
The other is to accommodate the Command System.

Looking at the pics, the BMW obviously has the largest headlights and taillights of this trio.
The front overhang is about as large as the Audi it seems. These features make it look less trendy in my personal opinion. Headlights and taillights, like the modern cell phone, for example, are getting much more sophisticated and the packaging, smaller with eye-catching graphics to match. Seems BMW went the other way around with big eyebrows and predictable graphics.

Good observation for overhang. :wthumb2:
Like it's fwd.

@klier
Why dislike ?
You don't like large front overhang on the G31 ? :)
A6 is fwd, and they have similar front overhang.
That's not my imagination, see photo above.
If you don't like that fact, that is other thing.
