If I was ever in the market for these hyper executive sedans, I think I'd lean towards the M5. However, next month I might lean towards the AMG. And the month after, who knows.

I'd spec it with the 5-spoke wheels (ironically, I've liked the multi-spoke option over the 5-spoke wheels the past 3 generations), either mediterranean blue, azurite black or carbon black, either the cognac leather or Individual caramel, and the Individual Plum Brown wood trim. I'd feel odd getting CF trim in what is essentially a full-sized sedan.

Why is this thread so quite ? is everyone waiting for the M5 reviews ?

Oh well, I think it will be the most epic battle between 2 cars in history, both are beautiful, both are well engineered with amazing power and acceleration figures.

My thoughts about the M5:-
- The new seats design is a winner, it looks comfy and sporty at the same time, I need to see more color combinations
- Love the interior red touches and its a nice way to differentiate between the normal 5er and M5
- I did not feel the wow factor when I saw it in pictures (still need to see it in flesh for final judgment)
- I'm sure it will beat the E63S on track, this is what BMW always does

My thought about the E63s:-

- The AMG treatment transfers the sheep looking E class into a wolf, well done AMG.
- Interior is more creative an revolutionary, but it is more similar to the normal E
- AMG engine sound is a winner, almost no V8 sounds better (excluding the hyper cars)
- I think it will beat the M5 in a straight line, but by a small margin

Lastly, I think that both are very close to each other in all aspects, whoever is going to buy one of them is going to have a hard time, but eventually he will chose the one he fell in love with.

I choose the E63s.

That wouldn't have made sense in the UK. According to Mercedes UK website the E63 is £79,130 at launch this would have been about £7000 more expensive than the M5 was.. or roughly the same as an M5 Comp Pack. The E63S would be another £10,000 beyond that.

So if anything, it's a case of using the E63S to get all the headlines, then offering the lesser E63 to compete on price with the M5.

That of course is based on the the M5 that was current when the E63 was launched. It will be interesting if the F90 is priced against the E63S, or if they're going to hold back on a £90k price tag for a Comp pack version.

So apparently the F90 will be £87,000, so near enough the same price as the E63S.

The E39 M5 was heavier than the F90, the E60 M5's are the same weight as the F90 - Not that M5's have ever been classed as lightweight. They are normally the heaviest 5-series' you can buy

Are you sure? I don't think the E39 M5 is anywhere close to being heavier than the F90 M5. Nor is the E60 M5 heavier than the F90 M5.

E39 M5 to EU1 with driver = 1,795kg

E60 M5 to EU1 with driver = 1,855kg

F90 M5 to EU1 with driver = 1,930kg

Sorry, possible context fail, when I say they are normally the heaviest 5 series' you can buy, I mean within their respective model ranges. I.e. If you wanted a lightweight 5 series, you wouldn't buy an M5, you'd buy something like a 520i, which is 1605kg EU, not 1930kg.

The E39 M5 is reported as 1795kg DIN, 1870kg EU in the BMW Press Release I was quoting from?

I don't mind being corrected on the details if I'm wrong... you are right, I did confuse the PR for the F90 (They've quoted it as EU/DIN, rather than DIN/EU as they do in pretty much every other spec release I've ever downloaded!), so I retract my statement that the E60 is the same weight.

However, I believe my point is still valid - none of the weights we are talking about are what I think can reasonably considered as "light" by their contemporary standards. And I think it's a somewhat tainted viewpoint to consider something at 1855kg as "special" and "outstanding", but something at 1950kg as underwhelming - given those outstanding and special M5's of old were, unsurprisingly about the same weight (or heavier) than the W210 E55 AMG (even using your 1795kg for the E39) and the W211 E63 AMG.

Lightweight is simply not something the M5 is known for.

You're hardly ever wrong, so I was wondering if I had it correct.

I see what you mean though.

The winner of this poll is (..drum roll..) from the best car site on the planet,
The E63s AMG!!

I know it's the lesser versions of these cars but I posted it anyway. I've driven the E43 AMG and it was absolutely horrible. Compared to the Ghibli SQ4 which was the other car in "attendance" the AMG felt like a taxi. Also why I don't believe any press clippings, especially not autoguide lol. The 5 series is the sportier choice hands down. Long story...if it's about driver involvement and dynamics I actually prefer the Ghibli over both :D

The missing link for this E43 is that new I6. With 490hp the E53, hopefully without a stupid big price increase, will be an even better car. Clearly the E43 is not a horrible car. It wins when compared and here it's against it's real BMW competitor the 550i, not the 540i. It's only one comparo, but if a magazine like C&D is gushing over the E43 something has changed dramatically from the "taxi" E300. It's real AMG tuning in the chassis if not a handbuilt engine.

Horrible? There is nothing horrible about any car in this class. That's hyperbole at best.

Actually I was shocked how bad it was. Maybe my expectations were too high (so i take back "horrible" but I'd say very disappointing. The E43 AMG is not at all what I was expecting. It is better than XF and A6 but for me not up to par with the rest. This is only what I thought/felt that day.

Based on what though?

So in other words, nothing a typical consumer would have to worry about. IMO the Italian car may be more feelsome at the track, but engineering wise the Ghibli is severely lacking compared to anything German. Features, quality, fit and finish all are years behind. There is no question who makes the better overall car, the Ghibli isn't even close. It is more or less based on a Chrysler 300 chassis and architecture and the interior reeks of it, though finished much better. In my experience with it, it feels ragged, not solid and all of one piece like the German cars. It feels half arsed like the overwhelming majority of FCA products.

This topic should be in "members car reviews"
It is an off topic subject and should not be listed in this thread.

E63 for now and forever!

I don't deny the M5 is a good car. However, the F90 is underwhelming, dare I say clichè, and, come on, let's be honest:

Now is a great time to be a Mercedes-AMG fan. Call the E63 what you will. 0-60 in 3.3s is SCARY.
