I have seen the Prototype camouflaged in that new plaid design on someone's phone ahead of the official announcement later this year. It was head on and yes the Grille is front and centre with the plate in the centre. Similar to the 4er.

Single frame double kidney.

I remember someone went to the preview of the new 4er and critisized the new front end with the vertical grille and the license plate in the middle.

I just found what I was looking after the other day. Almost two years ago someone on bimmerpost got a preview on the new 2er GC and the new 4er. This is what this person said:

"I also got to evaluate a prototype of the new 4 series. I thought it was butt ugly. They put a huge Audi style front grill on it, with the license plate right in the middle. The current 4 sitting next to it looked much better."

Which did not alarmed me back in the day as I had the 3.0 CSL hommage in ming. Now, after the rat faced i4 concept, I am afraid the next 4er will have a weird front end with the license plate in the middle of the kidneys, Audi style.

If they were to put a plate carrier on the CSL Hommage...it would be the same as the 4er. I liked it. It was fresh and modern but I really like the cars outline. It distances itself from the 3er entirely. The current 4er still has the relationship with the 3er now they have had a family dispute.

Well, it certainly looks...ummm..."very modern". Quite attractive actually, save the "Tall Kidneys" .

I dig the new kidney grille design. I really do.

It's a homage to the vintage BMW tall / vertical double kidney grille - but interpreted in a new way: making the kidneys stylized & jointed into single-frame grille.

It's also functional (allowing all the driving assistance sensors to fit behind the grille on BEVs) & ... NEW. Finally something new from BMW!!! I've already found the grille interpretation on GINA and then on Hommage 3.0 CSL & Vision Next 100 very REFRESHING, so this i4 grille looks SUPER DUPER COOL to me.

But I don't like what have tehy done on iX3 Concept grille: filling the center with that TACKY diamond patterns. Don't like the dotted pattern on the new Z4 grille. Stick with vertical bars or leave the kidney center PLAIN.

Taking into account the single frame kidney is more recent in time and people who have seen the next 4er claimed it looked more Audi-ish, with the license plate in the middle, my guess is the i4 concept grille is more in line with what we will end up seeing in the next 4er.

Then I would be very disappointed. The new grill suites the i- cars better. They need to distinguish more from the core line up. Kidneys shapes a la 3.0 csl Hommage with the license plate under the kidneys would be better.

Or perhaps the 4er he saw was the new 4er Gran Coupe which has now morphed into i4 BEV-only version.

The new BMW's will come with conjoint double kidneys ... like X7, 8er, 7er LCI etc

The single frame more vertical double kidney grille is becoming the BMW i design feature ... for now.

Cross your fingers and toes that they see the need to green light the The First Ever M4 Gran Coupe. That's the marketing line right there.

Cross your fingers and toes that they see the need to green light the The First Ever M4 Gran Coupe. That's the marketing line right there.

They MUST do an M4 GC when the release of an M8 GC is immidiate. That could be the most handsome looking Bimmer for quiet some time. That will be a no-brainer for the M-GmbH.
