S-Class W222 First Drives: Mercedes-Benz S Class FL 2017

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).
Thanks for your great indepth review and stunning pics of the new S400d @Mick Briesgau it sounds like an exceptional car. How does the performance of this new engine compare to your S350d? Is it considerably faster?

It was my pleasure, Rolf.
Of course you notice the extra 80 Nm of torque and the extra 82 hp. It's all even more effortless and relaxed driving than with the V6. About the extra hp I don't care, but the extra torque is what I like and what suits my kind of driving. So if it's faster 0 km/h to whatever km/h, which it most certainly is (especially because of the fact it was a 4Matic), isn't important for me. The sheer, effortless way of driving fast, is.

Not all of them, or you turn off even the cruise control as such

No, not that I've noticed.

Thank you very much for the review Mick.

It's really nice to hear the new diesel is such a Gem. I don't have any issues with our current V6, so if the new one is even better, great!

Have you notcied any imrpovments in the ride quality or handling or does it feel pretty much the same as the pre-fl?

It seems like the W223 may not be for you as I'm sure the autonomous driving features will be a drastic step up from even the FL W222. Have you considered what you will replace your S-class with?

In terms of material changes, I just noticed that the plastic around the control knob and touch pad are now gloss black. They are matte on my Dad's vehicle, so this seems like a small fingerprint attracting update.

Did you miss the exclusive interior package? If you were to order another S, would you take that package again?
In theory it costs 4771.90€ more than nappa + exclusive trim elements + illuminated door sills, but it requires electric rear seats, ventilated rear seats, panoramic roof and rear sunblinds package for 6128.50€. The total cost of exclusive package raises to 10900.40€. (S450 4M short wheelbase)

You're right, the material is changed from matte to glossy plastic. There are also a few new buttons in that area and the whole arrangement is changed a bit. The airmatic set-up for instance is now controled with some sort of push/pull button, as it can be seen in the W213. The integrated keyless startbutton is new as well.

For the time and distance I used the car, I didn't noticed any improvements in the ride quality or handling. As far as I'm informed, the airsuspension is basically the same as in the pre FL.

Several options are going through my mind. Still thinking about it.

Miss it is too much said, but you get used quickly to nice luxury in your car. The electric rearseats incl. memory, heated and ventilated rearseats have zero importance and function for me. In my current car I had to take the electric rearseats incl. memory. Now in the FL MB is forcing you to take the heated and ventilated rearseats as well. My reaction will be: no more exclusive interior package for me. Simple as that.

@Mick Briesgau earlier you mentioned worse driving feel for 4wd cars compared to equivalent rwd car. Do you notice it now or not so special difference?
Yes I noticed it. As you perhaps remember, there are more reasons why I don't want AWD:
- I don't need and want it;
- it's extra weight;
- extra fuel;
- save the extra money for something else;
- if it isn't there, it can't go broke.

Hey @Mick Briesgau , lots of people were complaining about the car braking when it reads the speed limit signs, but luckily you can turn it off.
I've read about cases where the traffic shield recognition wasn't functioning the way it shoud be. For instance, driving on the highway at 130 km/h, the car suddenly breaks down to 50 km/h because it "read" a traffic shield somewhere along the highway, not meant for highway traffic.

It would be the 3rd feature I'm turning off; lane keeping system and steering assist I've got always turned off. But that can't be the sense of those expensive systems. I'd rather have MB investing it's money in other aspects of my car, than in assistence/automotive driving. Like long durance -, interior- and overall quality, an even better airsuspension, best brakes (in stead of asking extra money for bigger brakedisks...) etc.
