I dunno. There's something about Maserati's Quattroporte and - to a slightly lesser extent - Ghibli models that just innately appeals to me. They don't pander to any in-vogue design practices or exhibit the latest in interior concepts and yet they remain distinctively attractive and convincingly upper echelon. Objectively, a 5er is a way smarter choice and money far better spent than a Ghibli and yet - you'd get away with pulling up at a swanky porte cochere in a Ghibli. In an A6, E-Class or 5er you'd look like you Uber blacked.

I'm going to have to disagree with you Martin. These current generation Maseratis are not worthy of the brand. Yes, they have great engines (other than the diesel, which is average), and they look OK, but there's too much FCA stuff going on, and the interiors are so average, as to completely ruin the brand for me.

For me, as a car enthusiast, when I see one, my first instinct is - there's a sucker!

When some people hit your 40-50s and have leased or owned various German or American cars, they fancy something different. Maseratis are sexy and have an arousing exhaust note.

Whether that's worth putting up with questionable reliability or FCA parts is up to the buyer.

That engine bay looks stunning!

Nothing more sucker than driving BBA. Even grandmas and their dog drive one.

I think I cover your sentiment sufficiently when I clearly state that there are far better ways to spend your money.
However, both the QP and Ghibli exude flair and elegance that will garner admiring glances from people - unlike us car enthusiasts - who know nothing about cars. Would I want to own a Maserati? No. Would I want to rock up in a Maserati? Yes.
Interior quibbles aside, not only do they have good engines but also ZF8HP transmissions so that pretty much covers the majority of mechanical reliability. More to your point though of being "worthy of the brand" looking back I can't think of a single Maserati over the last 40 years that was anything near class leading. If anything they've never been better than they are now.

What's BBA?

Oh yes. I would like to drive a quattroporte to a restaurant date.

Now I need to think about how I would pronounce thr brand when someone asks me what I drive.

1. Mase'ratí
2. Maseraaaati *say it while pinching your nose*

If I were in the market for one and planned to keep it for only a few years (as opposed to a lifetime), I'd get one over the equivalent German alternative. Life's too short.

I like Maserati for the same reason, they kinda exotic and not mass market like Audi, BMW and Mercedes even though ultimately they not as good as the Germans, They have a design elegance and flair that is missing in the teutonic three brands. Even the name Maserati brings an image associated with sophisticated wealth and drinking fine wine in a top Italian restaurant in Rome. They are a passionate brand with fantastic powertrains that bring alot of emotions to car lovers. My heart will say Maserati but my head will say Audi/BMW or Mercedes, sometimes logical things dont always make you the happiest lol.

How similar or different is this engine to the V8 in the Roma? Is it just a detuned variant?

The price of these flagships cars is quiet eye watering

Ghibli Trofeo: £103,890
Quattroporte Trofeo: £126,890.

Oooh, cryptic acronym - I thought it stood for Best Bet Alternatives. Which is what Benz, BMW and Audi are.

Resulting in:

heart: disappointment
head: obsolescence
ego: pragmatism

There is nothing more obsolescent than BBA. These cars are leased, are worth nothing (status wise) when 3 years old, because they are not the lastest version. Only Ghetto Gangsters drive old German cars which they can get cheap because no pragmatic person will spend on servicing them.

Ah man - you sure are the master of the sweeping statement.

I agree. While Maseratis still are an also ran, people forget what were doing in late 70s, all 80s, and most 90s. The BiTurbo, Shamal, 2nd gen Ghibli, 3rd and 4th gen Quattroporte et all.....
Also, there has been lots of negative feedback from the Chrysler switchgear and buttons on current Maseratis. Well, guess what? Last gen Quattroporte and Gran Turismo where full of Lancia/Alfa (a.k.a Fiat) switches and buttons.

In the end, they've always been a super small, niche manufacturer. Still far from class leading, but still very pretty. Ghibli and specially Quattroporte look much, much svelte and curvy to the solid teutonic and dull Jags.
If, and only if, money is not a concern, why not some italian sweet life?

Go radical or go home.....but no EQ radical please

"Things are looking sad for the luxury brand Stellantis Maserati."
"Production of the Quattroporte and Ghibli models will be discontinued at the end of 2023. The introduction of a new (fully electric) Quattroporte has been postponed from 2025 to 2028.
The Levante SUV will also come to an end at the end of March 2024. Not planned a successor model until 2027."
