EQB Mercedes EQB Spyshots

The Mercedes-Benz EQB (X243) is a seven-seat battery electric mid-size D-segment crossover SUV produced by the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz from 2021.
The EQB may be on hold as the smart factory in Hambach may be sold. Might be produced in Rastatt, Aguascalientes or Beijing instead? :)

INEOS Automotive announces that it has entered detailed discussions with Mercedes-Benz on the acquisition of its Hambach site
  • INEOS has suspended work on new build plans in Wales and Portugal pending the outcome of these discussions
  • The COVID-19 crisis has led to significant overcapacity in the European auto industry
  • Dirk Heilmann, CEO of INEOS Automotive said, “As a result of COVID-19, new options have become available as an alternative to adding two new facilities to the existing automotive manufacturing capacity”
INEOS Automotive is pleased to announce that it has entered into discussions with Mercedes-Benz over the acquisition of their Hambach site. The site, which is the home of the smart EQ fortwo models, has been recently developed with a new dedicated SUV line, similar in size to the Grenadier, which makes it ideally suited to the production of the INEOS Grenadier.

INEOS is assessing the option to utilise existing capacity within the industry, as an alternative to building its own plants. “Overcapacity has long been a major issue for the automotive sector,” said Dirk Heilmann, CEO of INEOS Automotive. “Of course we considered this route previously, but as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic some new options such as this one with the plant in Hambach have opened up that were simply not available to us previously. We are therefore having another look – and reviewing whether the addition of two new manufacturing facilities is the right thing to do in the current environment.”

“COVID has had an impact on our build schedules,” added Heilmann, “with ground clearing works and construction held up by the social distancing measures that have been required. Safety is of course paramount, but we also have an obligation to do what is right for the business – and so need to assess these new opportunities in order to maintain or improve on our timelines.”

INEOS expects to complete this review of its options in the next few weeks.

About INEOS Grenadier

In 2017, INEOS Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a car enthusiast and experienced adventurer, identified a gap in the market for a stripped back, utilitarian, hard-working 4x4 engineered for modern day compliance and reliability. INEOS Automotive Limited was formed and a senior team of automotive professionals assembled to bring the vision to reality.

The Grenadier will be a truly uncompromising 4x4 built from the ground up. Engineered to overcome all conditions, it will provide best-in-class off-road capability, durability and reliability to those who depend on a vehicle as a working tool, wherever they are in the world.

On the engineering front, we are now in the series development phase, supported by our engineering partner Magna Steyr, with prototype testing under way. The INEOS Grenadier will go into production in late 2021.

INEOS Automotive is a subsidiary of INEOS Group (www.ineos.com), a leading manufacturer of petrochemicals, speciality chemicals and oil products. It employs 23,000 people across 34 businesses, with a production network spanning 183 manufacturing facilities in 26 countries. From paints to plastics, textiles to technology, medicines to mobile phones, materials manufactured by INEOS enhance almost every aspect of modern life. In 2019, INEOS had sales of circa $61bn.

EQB PRODUCTION MAY START IN KECSKEMÉT IN THE 4TH QUARTER OF 2021

Production of the first purely electrically powered series-production vehicle from Mercedes-Benz in Hungary is expected to start in the Kecskemét plant in the fourth quarter of 2021. Production is based on the existing infrastructure.

EQB series production will start in the 4th quarter of 2021

After the start of the EQA series model at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt as the first fully electric comfort SUV from Mercedes-Benz, the Hungarian plant in Kecskemét will follow in the fourth quarter of 2021 as a further location with the production of the EQB. Series production of two plug-in hybrid models of the compact car family, the CLA 250 e Coupé and the CLA 250 e Shooting Brake of the 118 series, began in Hungary in July 2020.

With regard to the transformation towards electrification and digitization of the production network, the Hungarian location will be further strengthened with planned investments of a total of 100 million euros until 2025.

“Pilot Line” produces the first prototypes

The first prototypes are currently being produced at the Kecskemét plant on a special, separate production line, the so-called “pilot line”, in order to be able to plan and efficiently design the processes for subsequent series production. Later all drive variants move to the normal production lines, from classic combustion to plug-in hybrids to fully electric drives.

EQB is based on EVA 1.5 platform

The EQB (X 243) itself is based on the existing EVA 1.5 platform and is powered by the front axle as standard, although a 4MATIC variant with a second electric machine on the rear axle is also planned.

We are counting on the EQB 250 as an entry-level engine as well as the all-wheel drive variants EQB 300 4MATIC and EQB 350 4MATIC. An AMG variant, however, is not to be expected, in contrast to the EQE and EQS.

The drive train (eATS) of the EQB will probably continue to come from the supplier ZF, as is the case with the EQC model (N 293).

Mercedes EQB shortly before the world premiere

Like the EQS, the Mercedes EQB is shortly before its world premiere and will be available to customers in late autumn 2021

The EQB's little brother, the EQA, was presented in January 2021 and has been available for order since February. It is now being delivered to customers.

It has a 190 HP front engine (EQA 250) with 66.5 kWh net battery capacity. This gives it a WLTP range of 429 km.

In addition to this standard variant, there is also an all-wheel drive version with over 272 hp.

There will also be a long-range version with a WLTP range of over 500 km. These two versions should still be available for order in spring / early summer and then delivered to customers in late autumn 2021.

Factory sale delays the start of production

Since Daimler had decided to sell the smart plant in Hambach , the EQB will come later than planned anyway. Through the factory outlet, ineos produces the Grenadier in the new halls that were intended for the EQB. The EQB is based on the GLB (analogous to the EQA / GLA). Before the start of series production, production was relocated to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét (Hungary), while the little brother EQA rolls off the assembly line in Rastatt.

So it could be that the EQB no longer has the standard variant with 429 km WLTP range. This would make sense since the EQB is slightly larger and therefore has a slightly higher consumption.

The EQA is the little brother of the EQB

Longer wheelbase = bigger battery?

At 2.83 m, the GLB has the longer wheelbase of the MFA2 family (like the Z177 A-Class sedan long for China). This trumps the EQA or GLA by 10 cm (2.73 m). This could mean that the EQB has a larger battery because there is more space between the axles due to the longer wheelbase. Against this, there was talk that one would have an additional variant in the battery plant.

Since the EQB, like the EQA, is not a nose charger, but like the combustion engines GLA and GLB, has the charging plug at the rear right, the 11 kW on-board charger and the power electronics are installed under the trunk floor. Also due to the possibility of the 4matic drive (2nd motor installed on the rear axle), the trunk floor is installed a little higher.

As with the EQA, the charging power will be around 113 KW.

This not only means that the trunk volume is slightly lower, but also that the EQB, unlike the GLB, is only available as a 5-seater.

There are no surprises in terms of design - the EQ design elements are known from the EQA

The interior does not differ much from the EQA or GLB.
MBUX is known. The EQB will receive the luminous trim part from the EQA.

So Mercedes is pretty much under tension in 2021:

OFFICIAL: COMPACT SUV EQB SHOWS UP ON APRIL 18 IN SHANGHAI

Mercedes-EQ will already unveil the fully electric compact SUV EQB on Sunday, April 18, 2021. The EQB world premiere @ Mercedes-EQ Night Shanghai will take place on the evening before the first press day of Auto Shanghai 2021.

EQB and EQS will appear in front of an audience in China for the first time

In addition to the EQB world premiere, the EQS luxury sedan will celebrate its Asian premiere at EQ Night. With this, Mercedes-EQ is consistently expanding its range across all segments: The two most recent new models complement the already available portfolio of the compact EQA, the van EQV and the mid-range SUV EQC to now include five fully electric cars and vans.

Space for up to seven occupants

Among other things, the EQB will set a new standard in the electric compact class with its flexible space. It offers space for up to seven occupants or a maximum of 1,700 liters of luggage. After the market launch in China, the European version of the EQB will follow this year and will also be available on the US market in 2022.

the EQB is nothing to get excited for, imagine the GLB with the exact same front as the EQA and you will have the EQB.

This is like the ugliest Mercedes in a very long time. I like the GLB, I think it looks good, the AMG pack grill with those square headlights complete whole whole squarish shape of the car, simply looks better than any competition, but this EQB is a piece of shit design wise. Again the front looks good on a shorter car with a more flowing design like the EQA, but this is just glued together, very disappointing design.

EQB 350
Here are very strange things happening. In bright colors it looks very bad, like hmm very very bad, but in black I like it a lot...

The black finish makes the (lame) EQ line “grille” vanish, also the horrible hood cutline visually dissapears.
It looks good in black but just accidentaly?
