Mercedes Vision Iconic

The thing is they already had an S-Coupe. And it was en exquisite product. They got rid of it. So why bring it back?
Because getting rid of it was a mistake.

Building the EQS instead was stupid. Compared to a S-Coupe the EQS is a shitbox, sorry to be so harsh.

This should have been a Concept for their bread-and-butter saloons. If they showcased an E-class sized saloon concept with this grill it would have been more interesting than another Maybach 6 type coupe that won't ever make production.

The coupe should have been shown in Sterling Moss Silver in my opinion, it would be far nicer to have a lighter colour to show the contours than this dark matt black.

Nevertheless this coupe still does look very nice, I like the profile with the short front overhang and that massive bonnet, invokes memories of past models from the 30s and 40s with their huge engine bays.

Certainly, enough space under that hood to install the secret 8.0lt V16 800SEL engine that was earmarked for the W140 but with latest tech to reduce emissions to Euro 7 requirements.

How is the first time I’ve ever heard of the 800SEL 😍

I would have literally passed out in the showroom back then if they had done a 800SEL.

M
I was blown away by the 600SEL in 1991 and would have had my mouth dropping to the ground if they had launched a 800SEL. That badge designation just makes my hairs stand up from excitement. Imagine a gigantic 8 ltr V16 in an S-class in 1992, it would have been as fast as some Ferraris,

Juat the usual dose of haters nothing more.

Criticism should not automatically be equated to hate. Dislike ? Maybe.
Stunning concept.

It could have been. Sheetmetal surfacing and sculpturing look attractive, uncluttered. Proportions are caricaturesque with exaggerated hood length making the greenhouse appear disproportionately small. The "in your face" faux radiator grill shield is an acquired taste. Really not my personal cup of tea-but what does that matter anyway ?
The car looks crazy
IMHO it looks frivolous and overly eccentric in some significant aspects. But hey, it's a concept car.

i love it.

Well, it's there for those with perceptions of "beauty" like yours to enjoy. And should there be large numbers of the like-minded, there are chances that some isolated elements will be seen on future serial production vehicles.
In reality we won't get something like this but would love the next S to have this Grill..

A remotely similar faux radiator shield in any case.

Also if they made something like this please stick a V8 minimum.

Looking not too far down the road, I myself am quite skeptical as to whether that would be a good plan.

For me, this quite succinctly hits the nail on the head.
Why exactly?
What quantifies or qualifies a vision?

Ultimately this is all that concepts are. They're designed to present ideas that can be taken forwards into newer cars.
Take the original Vision NK. Not much of that concept has translated to the actual NK0 i3 beyond the wide kidneys and the slat DRLs. Even the rear lights are markedly different. But that's okay, because the whole point of the Vision NK was to show the design ideas they were running with, and nobody expected them to transition it 100% into the production saloon.

Obviously you don't have to like the Vision Iconic. That's fine. But talking about how its exaggerated and unrealistic and overly eccentric is very confusing. Because that's pretty much what all concepts actually are.

It presents little if anything that promotes forward thinking. Neo-retro.

The attribute mentioned above.

Not my intention to somehow insinuate that I expect a one-to-one translation from concept to production. That is far too rare and I am not so naive as to to anticipate this.
Because that's pretty much what all concepts actually are.

Examples such as the 2003 IAA MB CLS concept, the 2018 Audi etron GT concept, the 1995 Audi TT concept, the Polestar Precept, the 1993 Audi ASF concept challenge your statement.

What is "forward thinking"?

The EQ cars were "forward thinking", but ugly as hell.
The Vision NK was very Neo-retro, but it looks quite good.

On the one hand, we are rejecting the screens everywhere and want more analogue buttons, dials and switches. So, is that backwards thinking?

I don't really have the answers to these questions, but then I'm not asking.
Ultimately, all that matters is, does it look good and work well. Forward thinking isn't always tantamount to being good, nor is retro inspired always bad, or vice versa.
