CLS new Mercedes CLS commercial: "suddenly, everyone wants to build a 4-door Coupé

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
What about BMW's 4dr coupe the 8er or CS? do u think it's gonna be a hit for BMW as CLS did for MB?!

Actually BMW officials avoid to call CS a "4dr coupe" - but a "modern GT". GT (gran turismo / grand touring) is a synonym for a luxury sporty-performance car also appropriate for long-distance cruising. GT isn't specified by eg. number of doors.

Will it be as successful as CLS? In terms of sales numbers definitely not - since CS (new 8er) will be much pricier & of more limited production than eg. CSL. More in line with Panamera Turbo or CLS AMG sales numbers - or MB CL sales perhaps. I'm sure the car will be "sold out".

I see, well if it echos alot of CS looks then it be "sold out":usa7uh:,for some reason i thought the new 8er will be a coupe like the old one to go with the CL and the CS a 4dr coupe to go with the CLS.Does that mean we will not see an excutive coupe from BMW above the 6er? perhaps the 9er?!:D

6er will be a bit larger - since the new platform is larger. And it is staying a 2dr coupe slotted between 5er & 7er. 8er (4dr GT based on CS) will be positioned above 7er, and will be a gap-filler between BMW brand and Rolls-Royce brand - together with upcoming large 2-roadster (new Z8), and its M-exclusive coupe spin-off. And these 3 cars will have a role of a bridge between current BMW models line, and RR model line.

So, there will be no classic 2dr "executive" coupe positioned above 6er. But instead there will be a 4dr GT, and a large 2dr 2-seater roadster / coupe.

:t-cheers:

Yes it means "cut", not "cut 2 doors".. the fact that it's always been connected to a 2door vehicle doesn't mean that this is the only interpritation of the term. this discussion could go for ever because everyone would have their own interpritation..

I'd really like to hear the interpretation, while maintaining the etymology of the word in mind, that enables one to derive a logical explanation of 4-door coupe. Maybe then I can let it go. :D

but the bis question remains: who the **** cares what this thing is called?

I do... when it's illogical crap. Like I said, we can't have 3-sided octagons in our vocabulary ;)

I wouldn't say so. In general the term GT refers to spacious two door front engined long distance cruisers like the Contiental GT, 599 GTB and Maserati Gran Turismo. I have yet to ever see or hear the name GT and four door in the same sentence. So calling the CS a GT isn't any different from Mercedes labeling the CLS as a coupe. Using the name GT would be yet another another marketing trick by BMW in an attempt to be different.

I'm sorry, a lot of wors are evolving. That is normal.

Coupe means "cut", so it will always mean that, no evolution allowed?

Then, it is not a coupe but a 2-door sedan that is meant, not a coupe which sometimes has nothing to do with the sedan it comes from! So a Golf 2-doors is a Coupe, but a CLK (which does not look like a sedan minus 2 doors) is not, right?

I'm sorry. Today, coupe means a car with a coupeish line. The Mazda RX-8 looks like a coupe, the CLS too. Why not calling them from what they look like? Because of obscure historical reason that nobody care about?

The CLS has much more in common with a coupe than with a sedan, for me. Same with the RX-8.

Coupe with 4-Doors is the best way to describe the CLS. I don't see why you don't like it.

Cls is the only Merc I love & I think, it's the only Merc that looks like a car not built by Merc :t-cheers:...!

She's got more of passion factor then pleasure, unlike other Mercs :usa7uh: ...!

Well I guess that's where we'll disagree because I think the CLS is much closer to an E-class than a CLK...

For me the CLS just looks like a coupe, and it's only afterwards that you see it has 4 doors. Hence the name.

But to each his own. What I wanted to say, however, is that Coupe-4 doors is not a shocking name, it just shows the evolution of the cars, and the evolution of names.

Honestly, Coupe-Cabrio by itself has no meaning at all, a Coupe cannot have a folding roof. But it's the best way to describe a 2 doors car with a metal-folding roof. Looks like a Coupe, but in fact is a cabrio. Same with the CLS. Looks like a Coupe but in fact has 4 doors.

When it comes to the CLS its more about what the eye sees then what the name says. Out of all 4 door sedans Mercedes has done the best job creating the illusion of a four door coupe.

Personally don't care about sedan and coupe classification too much, what makes the CLS special to and most people who like it, is the sexiness. No other four door sedan ooze the same level as sexual attraction as the CLS.

For me, and I've always maintained this, the overall presentation of the concept of a coupe lies not in the number of appetures a car has but rather the overall proportion and silhouette that a car has.

In the modern idiom of the concept I think that cars like the CLS and RX-8 are true coupes irrespective of their number of doors.

In my mind a true coupe's salient features are an elongated profile with a shallower than normal DLO and high belt-line. The silhouette should exhibit a low and cab-backward form with the emphasis on a sleek and powerful profile.

A fastback with 5 doors and an upwardly hinging tailgate (hatch) is not a coupe.

So, in my mind, Mercedes' execution of the CLS is true to the concept of a coupe whilst BMW's X6 is not.
