296 [2021-] Ferrari 296 Version Special and Special Aperta

The Ferrari 296 (Type F171) is a two-seater, offered as a GTB coupe and a GTS folding hard-top convertible. It is a plug-in hybrid with a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and its powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 120-degree bank angle V6, with an electric drive fitted in between the engine and gearbox. The 296 can be driven in electric-only mode for short distances, to comply with use in urban zero-emission zones.
The good thing is that in few years we can buy one of the best cars of all time, the GTB, at a great price.

But I don't get why they named it "Speciale" if its not limited so not that special.

You can buy one now at a great price. The cost of this car is astronomical and I don’t think impacts 296 values much. The 296 is the best Ferrari I’ve driven, from a dynamic perspective, bar none.

I agree on the name, should have been something else.

I like this car very much, its the best new Ferrari on sale and much better buy than the ugly F80. The 296 Speciale V6 sounds great and the handling is super agile and responsive. It is however not in the same league as the 458 Speciale which in my opinion is probably the best Ferrari of the last 25 years with its magical sense of occasion and extraordinary sounding NA V8 at 9000rpm.

Didn't the mid engine flagship used to be like a challenge car for the road. This one doesn't seem to be thet extreme. However one reviewer mentioned that there could be an FXX variant coming. Why not? Porsche does GT3 and GT3 RS.

Yes. Used 296 have hit fabolous prices levels on the used market. Especially here in the UK where our RHD cars don't have high demand from those outside of the country. Many examples, even with less than 10k miles, have depreciated by 40% after options. It's spoken highly of by owners and the press.

I think the 296 speciale looks very nice. Being a tiny bit less track biased than expected might not be ther bad if you want to tour or daily it. This might have been the result of feedback from customers.

It just means there’ll be a 296 XX. It’s where they’re headed.

I didn't watch all the videos, but I noticed two journalists mentioned this rumored variant:

Meaden
"The completeness of the Speciale's performance gains means it's not the extreme machine some of you might have been hoping for. However, headbangers amongst you will be pleased to know there are whispers Ferrari's working on something more hardcore, an XX perhaps. But exciting though that is, our time in the Speciale suggests it will be the sweet spot between the GTB and whatever the rumored more extreme 296 turns out to be."

Catchpole
"I wish they'd named it something other than Speciale, because I feel like it makes perhaps unfair comparison inevitable. I think the 296 Speciale stands apart from its predecessors, the Challenge Stradale, the Scuderia, the 458 Speciale, and the Pista. It's not quite as hardcore. To me, it feels a bit more like a 296 GTB ++. It is still fantastic on road and track. It is that little bit more aggressive and better to drive. But it's not quite as out and out hardcore. And I think there is a reason for that. I think there is headroom for something else above it in the future."

Imagine a 296 XX with GT3 RS level of aero (and bigger tires capable of handling the higher load). That's easily a ZR1X, GT2 RS MR beating performance with unchanged horsepower of the 296 Speciale.

An addition of a more hardcore 296 version covers the competition, ensuring no Corvette embarrasses Maranello in a group track test, while keeping conventional Ferrari users happy with more civilized, road focused Speciale.

There is a rumor that car will be a manual, so more of a 911R/ST variant. It’s still unclear. Though they could make both I suppose.

That doesn't seem like a good match to me. I would expect Ferrari to re-introduce manual in the next Icona series model, paired with a V12.

Yip, it’s fairly clear that this is how Ferrari intends to deploy the XX moniker into road-going machinery for greater margin opportunity.

I’d be helluva surprised if there’d be any Ferrari customers out there who’d want a manual.
Ferrari should ask CvK for a license to their virtual manual gearbox. It's a perfect solution for these owners - you get to have a rare, desirable option and not having to use it :D

Me too, of the opposite. I'd assume many (like around 1/3) want a manual, particularly in the United States.
It's an absolute scandal Ferrari doesn't have the gated manual in any of its models. A scandal.

If nothing else. But I would prefer a real one.

Keep it simple stupid. KISS

I am a little late here, yeah. I agree, this car is stunning —the best-looking Ferrari to date, with no overdone, tacky details.
Its driving dynamic seems to be locked down very well.
