Some people here are forgetting about the R8, which is close to an S65 coupe.

But then again, this whole thread is just for MB fanboys trying to feel good about their beloved S class.
Did you just loose your mind?

R8 as in Audi R8? as in pictured below is a competion to the S coupe?

Or are you talking about some other R8 i don't know of?

Did you just loose your mind?

Direct competition price wise. That is, when you don't count all the El Cheapo S coupe/cabrio with little crappy V6 that cost less than 100k. You might want to check how much an R8 costs and how it's more expensive than 99.99% of any Benz.

If you are happy to compare a run off the mill S class to a Rolls, I can't compare the R8 to a Benz? What an utter joke.

Right, that was utterly ridiculous.

M

Ok my little dictator. If that makes you feel good.

Wrong, anyone can buy CERTAIN Mercedes, not all of them. Everyone and Anyone can't buy a S Cabrio, the car being talked about here.

No one said that MB was the equal of Mercedes, my point was that it competes on some levels whereas Audi and BMW do not. Do you really not get that?

M

Yes but the fact that Mercedes make down market vehicles under the same brand tarnishes what you think they are at the top end. Mercedes will also make more S cabrios at significantly cheaper prices than RR or Bentley.

Audi and BMW don't make a car like the S Cabrio, if they did I wouldn't see the Mercedes being any more prestegious.

Audi has the R8, which can only be compared to a high end S63 coupe with some nice options or an S65 V12.
All the other S coupe/cabrio versions are cheap compared to the R8.

No it doesn't because people still pay big bucks for top end Mercedes models so you clearly don't know what you're talking about. You measure image in one way by seeing what people will pay for your top products and Mercedes clearly sells at prices that Audi and BMW don't. Of course you wouldn't see it because you don't have a clue about brand cachet.

The R8 is a mid-engine sports car, so why you're comparing it to the S Coupe/Cabrio is beyond me, but I'm not surprised.

Could this be because BMW has Rolls Royce, and Audi/VAG has Bentley?

I agree with you that the Mercedes brand has moved a little upmarket (mostly because they scrapped the standalone Maybach brand), but I know you're smart enough to think about things in their full context. BMW and Audi can move upmarket if they wanted to, but it is not in their strategy to do so because of RR and Bentley.

Sure they could move upmarket if they wanted too, but BMW in particular has failed every single time they have tried it. 8-Series, failed, Z8 failed. Audi can sell the R8 with no problem, but no one buys an A8 W12. They're both limited. Yes upmarket a little that is what I was saying about MB, but of course because BMW fans felt slighted they couldn't grasp what was being said.

It isn't because they have Bentley or Rolls. There is a huge space between BMW and Rolls for BMW to compete with Mercedes' upper level cars, ditto for Audi and Bentley. They just don't have the brand strength to do it. They going to try and do it though so we'll see how it turns out. That large monstrosity of a concept coupe BMW showed a few years ago is a fail waiting to happen IMO.

Think of it like this @Merc1 .

VAG group (Audi) owns one of the largest car groups on the planet, including the luxurious brand Bentley.

BMW own mini, and the most luxurious car brand - RR.

Dailmer (Mercedes) owns...smart lol

BMW and AUDI do have cars competing with Mercedes upper segments - just not under the same badge.

Mercedes, unfortunately do not operate in the same way, and don't have a wide range of brands to sell their products over. and their brand reaches all the way from the lower segments (A Class) to the higher (Long Long wheelbase S Class - I mean Maybach)

take a step back and analyse the whole information

Seriously? You're not telling me anything that I or anyone else doens't know already know. All you're doing now is trying to offer up an excuse as to why BMW and Audi can't go higher under their own brand names. A Rolls is NOT an extension of a BMW unless you're telling me a Rolls is just a BMW in drag. You CAN'T have it both ways. Pick a struggle. Ditto for Audi. A Bentley is not an extension of Audi. Those British (themed at least) cars are totally different in practice from BMW and Audi. So no dice to that. Like I said above there is a huge amount of space between BMW and Audi and Rolls and Bentley respectively which is why Audi is talking about a coupe above the A8 and BMW an 8/9 Series. Your excuses don't fly when BMW and Audi are actively and openly planning on moving upmarket.

SL, S Coupe, S Cabrio, G, AMG GT, S600 Maybach, Pullman. Neither BMW or Audi has an answer for ALL of them.

M

911, continental GT, RR Dawn, Phantom/Ghost - they do have competitors, just not under the same badge!

when the discussion has escalated to this point, think of these brands on a bigger scale. Mercedes sell ALL of their products under 1 badge - Audi and BMW do not.

And yes, the 6.6 V12 is carried over, and the CLAR platform will be used on future RR.

And I'm telling you that is BS. Period. They aren't Audis or BMWs. Porsche, Rolls and Bentley are their own brands, unless you're saying that those cars are just Audis and BMWs in drag?

Which is it? Pick a struggle man.

Again, everyone in the KNOWN WORLD knows that MB sells all their products under the own badge. It seems you don't really have a decent argument to float here.

So are you saying that Rolls is nothing but a BMW? I don't think BMW would agree with that.

Fact is that BMW and Audi don't have competitors to ALL those models from Mercedes. Period. They're planning on going up market which obliterates your argument that they use other brands to compete with Mercedes. They're going to do it on their own, using their own brands because there is (again) plenty of space for them to do it. Especially with BMW and Rolls.
